Here’s a snapshot of this years free agent market for starting pitchers. I omitted some of the pitchers who quickly re-signed with their teams like Tim Hudson of the Braves, Carl Pavano of the Twins, and Scott Olsen of the Nationals. Will Mets Make A Play For Aroldis Chapman?
In kind of a surprising move last week, although not really, the Florida Marlins jumped into the sweepstakes for Cuban left-handed pitcher Aroldis Chapman. The Marlins reportedly offered the young phenom a five-year deal for $13 million dollars. That averages out to about $2.5 million annually. The Red Sox have reportedly offered a similar five year deal for a little more at $15 million dollars. Bob Howry Signs With Arizona Diamondbacks
The Arizona Diamondbacks have come to terms with reliever, Bob Howry, reports Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic [Hat tip MLB Trade Rumors]. Jerry Crasnick of ESPN via Twitter says, Kelvim Escobar contract details: $1.25 million guaranteed base salary, and a $125,00 bonus for making the Mets’ Opening Day roster. Various news outlets are reporting tonight that the New York Mets have signed Kelvim Escobar to a one year Major League contract. The 33 year-old right hander has pitched for two teams throughout his big league career; first with the Toronto Blue Jays and most recently with the Los Angeles Angels. Nationals Sign Reliever Matt Capps
According to Bill Ladson of MLB.com, reliever Matt Capps has agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the Nationals, pending a physical. ESPN’s Buster Olney reported that the deal is for $3.5 million for 2010, with a chance to make another $425,000 in performance bonuses. The performance incentives kick in at 40-65 games finished. Famed radio DJ and sportscaster George Michael died Thursday at age 70 after a battle with cancer. Michael was best known for his syndicated late-night show entitled: “The George Michael Sports Machine”.
