Joe, your perspective is spot on. I’d like to make a couple of points.

“…and Mejia is lighting up the radar gun in Buffalo… or the Mets bullpen.” Unless he continues to throw with command — no sure happening — Jenrry might light up the radar gun but be ineffective. So he has to show his stuff for more than a handful of outings. At the same time, he has to show he can hold players at first base, he has to pitch out of a few jams, and he has to keep his composure. With his brief but dominating appearances this spring, he hasn’t really been tested in these areas of the game. The real trials for Mejia are yet to come. It will be a tall order for a kid who had trouble in AA ball last year.

Kevin Kernan of the NY Post comes from an occasionally unstable stable of writers. I’ve read ‘mucho loco’ stuff from his New York Post and also from the New York Daily News.

Not for nothing Tommy, but u can’t just pretend like Ollie never got the contract. Ollie looks better and u need to give him a few starts before getting rid of him. He’s on a short leash but still the #3 guy in this rotation.

In my mind figgy gets the shot in the rotation and he showed that late last yr, in the winter and this spring. I believe kiko will win the 8th inning job but its too early to assume that much.

If they really feel like Jennry can be that good in the pen, then start him off as the closer in double A. If he does well the same in triple A. If he can work his way to the Ml pen this yr then credit the kid but u can’t assume anything. This could be a guy that could replace k-rod after next yr as the closer. That’s just my opinion

Figgy & Takahashi need to be on the roster. Pat Misch could be a 5th starter on many rotations, but sending him to AAA pending Ollie’s performance is good insurance. Figgy can’t be sent down unless we’re ok losing him. I’m not. He’s got attitude and knows how to ply his trade.

Let’s review our selection:

Rotation: Santana, Pelfrey, Ollie, Maine, Niese/Nieve/Takahashi/Figgy

Bullpen: K-Rod, Feliciano, Parnell, Green, Igarashi, Niese, Nieve, Takahashi, Figgy, Stoner, Misch, Calero, Mejia

Here’s my choices without apology:

Rotation: Santana, Pelfrey, Niese, Nieve, Figueroa

Bullpen: K-Rod, Feliciano, Calero, Parnell, Takahashi, Igarashi & Mejia

In my book, Ollie’s out – and I used to be a bigtime Ollie fan. He’s too inconsistent, period.

I think Niese could grow into a No. 3 this year. I think Nieve and Figueroa would provide reliable starts and, at times, shut down the opposition entirely. I could live with either laying an occasional egg, with Nieve having a very temporary bout with control and Figgy getting smacked around the park on a blue moon. But I would also have reasonable confidence that they would snap to in the next start.

I have concerns about Nieve’s stamina over the course of a full season, so Pat Misch, Takahashi & Stokes would be kept in ready reserve.

Mejia may be a future stud, with ‘future’ in bold and underlined…AAA for grooming. However, have we noticed that Mejia’s assignments have been reduced from 2 – 3 innings to 1 IP? i think that may be ominous for what the Mets are thinking and for Mejia’s eventual adjustment to the rotation. JOBA II, anyone?

Are we going to pick and choose who we judge on ST. One player does well “relax its only ST” another one doesn’t light it up and “How is he doing, not so good, he sucks”………..consistency at its best

He struggled at AA last year, he was lit up in the AFL, now in less than 9 innings a ML manager is tripping over himself to sell this kid as a ML ready 8th inning reliever. That says more about the poor judgement of the manager than the player. Takahashi, Misch, Figueroa, and Igarishi should all have spot unless they demonstrate they are not ready in spring training. Let Parnell go to AAA and get a second pitch so ML hitters can’t sit on his fastball like they did the second half of last year. Note that I see Parnell, Holt and Pelfrey as similar cases. Rushing Pelfrey to the ML without a good second pitch slowed his progress and it seems like this year he is starting to figure it out. Give Parnell a second pitch to keep lefties off balance and he could be the 8th inning guy Manual is hungry for. He may not come up for afew months but the wait could payoff. Same for Holt.

Team and many fans love Pelfrey,Murphy. They can’t do wrong. They’re young and bound to improve. The club reluctantly signed Mike Jacobs as insurance for Murphy and didn;t get any insurance for Pelfrey,Maine, and Perez. Pelfrey and Murphy sink or swim and the Mets with them.
