His Power Is Definitely Legit

Posted by Joe D On March - 4 - 2010

Watching Ike Davis totally blast a baseball out of the park with the bases drunk today, is definitely worth a second look.

Check out the following video courtesy of Matt Cerrone at MetsBlog who has been doing a phenominal job this year providing us with the best spring coverage of the Mets that we have ever been privy to.

It kind of makes you feel tingly all over doesn’t it? Is it too far-fetched to envision having another David Wrightesque player manning first base for the rest of this decade?

I haven’t been this excited about an upcoming Mets prospect since… well since David Wright.

Vintage Mets: 1969 Was A Very Good Year

Posted by Joe D On February - 16 - 2010

Here’s a video that recently popped up, and when I saw it I just knew I had to share it with you. It’s the late Lindsey Nelson trying, but not really succeeding, to interview the Mets in the locker room just after they won the 1969 World Series against the Orioles.

It’s a real trip watching these guys… I love those original uniforms and it really makes me wish the Mets would stop playing games and just stick with these original beauties.

The video features Tom Seaver, Donn Cledennon, Buddy Harrelson, Jerry Koosman, Jerry Grote and even the original Mets owner, Mr. Charles Payson who was celebrating his birthday that day.

It’s a lot of fun, enjoy it….

Pitchers Ready For Spring Training

Posted by Dave [Retire 31] On February - 16 - 2010

Mets’ imported arms, Ryota Igarashi and Hisanori Takahashi threw bullpens Monday, within hours of their arrivals. Igarashi is locked into the bullpen since he has a two-year major-league deal. He will be pairing with the over-worked lefty “Perpetual” Pedro Feliciano for the set up job.

Takahashi, who spent 10 seasons with the Yomiuri Giants in Japan, is a lefthander on a minor-league contract, trying to get on the roster as the fifth starter—which he feels more comfortable doing than working as a second lefthander in the pen behind Pedro Feliciano or as the long man.

“I’m thinking about starting because I started for 10 years in Japan, so I know how it goes,” Takahashi said through an interpreter. As for how Day 1 went, he added: “I had a little mental stress, a little tired, because English is not my first language. I don’t know where I’m supposed to go and those types of things. The body conditioning-wise is good. But just the language. Not stressed, more like drained.”

Catching prospect Dock Doyle caught Igarashi and said:

“He was a little more rapid fire (than major-league pitchers). He was getting the ball and throwing the ball. I’ve never caught a Japanese pitcher before, so it was a little bit different. He worked both sides of the plate with his fastball—all four seamers. It’s early on, so that’s why he probably wasn’t throwing any breaking balls, but his changeup seemed to be his go-to pitch because it was rather good.”

Omar Minaya added:

“It’s the first time I’ve seen them firsthand. I’ve seen them on film. Takahashi, the command of his fastball looked pretty good. And what we saw from Igarashi was a pitcher who, as a relief pitcher, it’s early, but he showed arm strength, which is what you want to see this early in the year.”

I’m skeptical about Takahashi getting the five starter spot because we haven’t seen much of him, and we don’t know how he will adjust to American play and players.

Speaking of the number five spot of the rotation. Jon Niese threw his fifth bullpen session this month Monday, and hopes the hamstring issue he endured in August doesn’t prompt the organization to be too conservative with him and cost him a chance at the No. 5 starter’s job.

“I feel like I’m on track,” Niese said. “My bullpens have been real strong lately. I’m just going to go in and act like I’m ready. I’m not real worried about it. I feel strong. I feel like I’ve felt every year going into spring training. I’m going to try to make the club. I’ve been trying to cut loose as much as I can. I’m probably 90-95% right now—everything, body, arm.”

As for John Maine, he suggested two years of shoulder woes are behind him, too, and he’s ready to perform like it’s 2007, when he won 15 games with an ERA of 3.91.

“I can tell,” Maine said about his health returning. “Last year I just didn’t heal properly from the surgery. Now it’s in the past. I feel fine. I feel normal. I feel good.”

As for performing like his 15-win season, Maine added:

“That’s always the goal. I’ve got to get back to pitching like I did. That was before all this stuff happened. I was every five days and just going out competing. That’s the No. 1 goal—going out there every five days. I think if I do that, everything will work itself out.”

Pitchers and catchers may not officially report until Thursday, but the Mets’ complex in Port St. Lucie was buzzing with activity Monday. Check out the montage of sights and sounds in the video (in the link) provided by The Daily News.

Carl Schaus Promoted To Buffalo Bisons

Posted by Joe D On November - 14 - 2009

AT&T has debuted a new national television advertisement this week for their 3G Network that features the Mets AAA affiliate, the Buffalo Bisons. The 30-second spot is already airing nationwide.

The new commercial is about a fictional player named Carl Schaus who has just been promoted to the Buffalo Bisons and is trying to race to the ballpark in time for his first road game.

Schaus uses his AT&T phone to get faster directions for his taxi driver and then shows up to Coca Cola Field in time to find out he’s leading off for the Bisons. Schaus then puts on a batting helmet and receives cheers from the crowd as he heads to the batter’s box.

Enjoy…

The Bisons can use all the help they can get, fictional or otherwise after a dreary season in 2009. Things may be looking up for them though, especially with Josh Thole and maybe even Ike Davis bolstering their roster. I wonder what is to become of our former first baseman of the future Nick Evans?

Keith Hernandez Loves Bobbleheads

Posted by Hojo's Mojo On September - 13 - 2009

Newsday’s Neil Best was fortunate enough to meet with Keith Hernandez recently. Keith was gracious enough to allow his camera crew to film him and his lovely wife Kai in their beautiful Long Island home in Sag Harbor.

I absolutely loved all the vintage bobblehead dolls that you could see everywhere, as well as all the hardware he accumulated throughout his career including two miniature versions of the 1986 and 1982 World Series trophies.

You can read more about Neil’s visit on Newsday

I’m looking forward to the day that the Mets retire his number.

Here is a short list of Keith’s amazing achievements:

  • Won 11 consecutive Gold Glove Awards (1978–1988) at first base (the largest total by any first baseman).
  • Won the 1979 National League MVP award along with Willie Stargell.
  • Holds the career record for game winning RBIs, a statistic that was only official from 1980–1988. His career record is 129. The season record (also by Hernandez) is 24, set in 1985.
  • Batted over .300 seven times in his career.
  • Was a member of two World Series Championship teams (1982 Cardinals, 1986 Mets).
  • Was selected to the All-Star Game five times (1979, 1980, 1984, 1986 as a starter, and 1987).
  • Was the National League Silver Slugger at first base in 1980 and 1984.
  • Led the National League in runs scored (1979 and 1980), doubles (1979), on-base percentage (1980) and walks (1986).
  • Inducted into the New York Mets Hall of Fame in 1997.
  • Voted Mets’ all-time first baseman by fans in celebration of the team’s 40th anniversary in 2002.

Video: Buffalo Bisons Turn Three

Posted by Joe D On September - 2 - 2009

While we were watching the Mets get pounded in Colorado last night, the Buffalo Bisons were busy putting on a good show for their fans in Coca Cola Field.

Check out this video of the Buffalo Bisons turning a triple play against the Rochester Red Wings.

The Bisons ended up losing the game 9-6 to Rochester, but unlike the Mets, at least they get credit for style points. Nice job guys!

At Least ESPN Finds The Mets Entertaining…

Posted by Hojo's Mojo On July - 8 - 2009

Here is a sobering video of the Mets worst plays of the season according to ESPN.

I warn you that this is definitely not for the squeamish.

Can you believe that this Mets team was predicted to win the World Series by Sports Illustrated?

Is it time to think about 2010 yet?

A hat tip to Mark for the video link.

Video: Tom Seaver Talks About Being Traded To Reds

Posted by Joe D On June - 15 - 2009

Earlier today, Rob (aka Tie Dyed) penned a great piece that looked back on that ill-fated day when the Mets traded “The Franchise” Tom Seaver to the Cincinnati Reds.

Here is some video where Mike Douglas interviews Tom Seaver and they discuss that trade and the events that led up to it.

Enjoy this vintage video…

Here is the complete video of the streaker from last night’s game at Citi Field. It was taken by the best friend of the streaker who is known as Craig Coakley.

When he finished his performance which included sliding into second base, he was finally grabbed by security and the guards dragged him away through a tunnel on the third-base side.

The Braves were leading 1-0 when the streaker, identified as Craig Coakley, made his appearance in the fifth inning, but the Mets won 4-3 in 10.

Coakley was charged with interfering with a sporting event and trespassing. He is expected to be arraigned this morning.

Video Flashback: Gary Carter

Posted by Hojo's Mojo On May - 1 - 2009

Check out this video of former Mets All Star catcher Gary Carter. It comes courtesy of Gary Carter’s blog on Newsday where he covers his latest exploits as the manager of the Lon Island Ducks.

Carter says this in his first blog post.

Hey, everybody. Thanks for checking out the blog. I’m very excited to be managing the Ducks this year, and I think this team’s going to have a great year.

I’m also really excited to be blogging for Newsday.com. In fact, I did a commercial for Newsday back in the 80s, so I guess you could say we’ve worked together before.

I’ll be honest, I’m not the most computer savvy guy, but the web staff at Newsday said they’d pitch in and add some links and tags and whatever else that stuff is. I’m here to talk about the Ducks, what’s going on in the world of baseball, and I’ll probably share a story or two about my playing days.

So make sure you check the blog often and I’ll do my best to keep it updated and interesting.
