We all know who Prince Fielder is. He is a big guy with huge power. He has also become one of baseball’s best power hitters, and has been a Met killer as well. But could you imagine Prince Fielder as a New York Met? According to the New York Daily News, Cecil Fielder told Ebenezer Samuel that the Mets could very well end up signing his son Prince Fielder when he hits the free agent market. [...]
The deal seems to be in place where the Tampa Bay Rays would send Matt Garza, Fernando Perez and minor-league pitcher to the Cubs for Chris Archer, Hak-Ju Lee, Brandon Guyer, Sam Fuld and Robinson Chirinos. What does this mean for the Mets, and could they have swung a similar deal? Garza is an extreme fly-ball pitcher with a 6.6K/9. To get him, the Cubs sent their best pitching prospect (Chris Archer), their minor league [...]
Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported today that the managerial “search” is more of a formality: I guess Hale, in particular, has a chance to throw a Hail Mary and get the job. But this is as close to a rigged event as possible with Collins as the favorite and Melvin as a very in-the-competition second choice. If this is in fact the situation, then why is it taking so long to declare [...]
Update 11:55PM AOL’s Bill Price confirms that the Astros and Phillies are definitely engaged in talks, but a source wouldn’t say it’s down to “finishing touches” yet. Original Post 11:30 PM According to a report by Jayson Stark of ESPN, the Phillies might be on the verge of something big. There were indications Tuesday the Phillies were working on a major deal to acquire a starting pitcher in an attempt to save a season that has veered in the [...]
From the files of the strange, but true… According to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, the Mets will not part with “B Level” prospect Ruben Tejada, even if it meant acquiring a top of the rotation starter like Houston Astros Ace, Roy Oswalt. The Mets are so high on rookie infielder Ruben Tejada, their fill-in second baseman for the injured Luis Castillo, that they’d be reluctant to include him in a trade for a pitcher such [...]
Orioles infielder Ty Wigginton wants to remain with the Orioles if the alternative is receiving little playing time elsewhere, according to Dan Connolly of The Baltimore Sun. Wigginton told Connolly that he’s not campaigning for a deal and enjoys playing in Baltimore: “If I were to go somewhere, I’d want it to be somewhere I could contribute,” the 32-year-old said. “But I love the city of Baltimore, and I love playing here for these fans.” [...]
According to Dan Martin of the New York Post, righthander Kevin Millwood and super utility man Ty Wigginton are open to playing for the Mets if the Orioles become sellers between now and the trade deadline. Martin says that despite his 0-5 record, the 35-year-old Millwood has pitched well in his first season with Baltimore. He currently has a 3.89 ERA this season with a 1.27 WHIP and 58 strikeouts in 74 innings pitched. “I wouldn’t mind pitching [...]
Earlier today, after starting Angels 1B Kendry Morales went down with an injury, it was mentioned that the Angels have no solid backup plan at 1B. Can the Mets be players? The Mets currently have Daniel Murphy rehabbing at AAA, and with Brandon Wood struggling as well at 3B for the Angels, could he be a fit? Murphy could platoon between 1B and 3B and possibly be a good trading chip with a team the Mets [...]
Most of you who read this site are well aware of the competition for first base between Daniel Murphy, Ike Davis, Mike Jacobs and Fernando Tatis. Top prospect, Ike Davis is out-hitting and out-producing the competition and is miles ahead of the pack, but his youth and inexperience may have him ticketed for a one-way trip to Buffalo in the next few days. Jacobs and Murphy have done little to grab hold of the everyday [...]
As most of us Mets fans know by now, Jose Reyes is expected to start the season on the disabled list due to an overactive thyroid. He is expected to cease all activities for 2-8 weeks. Both Jerry Manuel and Omar Minaya have said that Reyes will most likely be replaced with 20-year old Ruben Tejada, who played in Double-A last year, this according to the New York Daily News. Tejada batted .289 last season and hit five homers in 488 [...]
Update 10:15 pm According to Joel Sherman of the NY Post via Twitter, free agent Joe Beimel is still looking for something similiar to the $2 million that he earned last year, but that the Mets won’t go there. Original Post 2/26 According to Adam Rubin of the Daily News, the Mets have made an offer to free-agent reliever Joe Beimel, and the 32 year old southpaw has confirmed the offer. Left-handed reliever Joe Beimel confirmed [...]
