D-Backs Acquire Armando Galarraga From Tigers
According to MLB Trade Rumors, the Diamondbacks have acquired RHP Armando Galarraga from the Tigers in exchange for RHP Kevin Eichhorn, and LHP Ryan Robowski.Armando Galarraga, whose near-perfect game became one of the highlights of the 2010 season, had been designated for assignment by the Tigers. The move came just hours after the two sides agreed to a one-year, $2.3 million deal, avoiding arbitration. Galarraga retired the first 26 Indians hitters he faced on June [...]

Strange Happenings On A Freaky Friday
I was amazed yesterday at the free agent signings of outfielders Manny Ramirez and Johnny Damon by the Tampa Bay Rays. My first instinct was that they had gone bonkers, but it only took a few minutes to realize that both signings actually made good sense for the Rays who are still reeling from the losses of all-star outfielder Carl Crawford and the power hitting Carlos Pena. The price was right. Each of them agreed to one-year [...]

Gil Meche’s Retirement: Why It Matters
This has basically nothing to do with the Mets. But it has a helluva lot to do with baseball. So if you are only interested in reading about the Mets, my advice is that you step away here. Gil Meche, once a pitcher for the Seattle Mariners and the Kansas City Royals, announced his retirement on Tuesday. There’s one interesting detail about this that really made me feel that he deserved an article – Meche [...]

Nationals Acquire Tom Gorzelanny From Cubs
According to ESPN Chicago, the Nationals have acquired LHP Tom Gorzelanny from the Cubs in exchange for three minor league prospects — two pitchers and an outfielder, according to two major league sources. Gorzelanny was 7-9 with a 4.09 ERA last season, and last week there was speculation that the Mets might be interested in acquiring the left hander. Last month, Mike Puma of the New York Post said he Sandy Alderson asked the Cubs about [...]

Yankees Sign Soriano To A “Putz” Of A Deal
Have you ever read or heard something that was so out of left field that it made you pause and do a double take? When I read Wallace Matthews’ article on the Yankees signing of Rafael Soriano, I all but mimicked my 4 month old daughter, spitting my morning oatmeal practically through my nose. It seems our step brothers over at Evil Empire Inc., who were spurned by Cliff Lee and Carl Crawford this winter, have [...]

Garza Set To Go To Cubs – Now What?
The deal seems to be in place where the Tampa Bay Rays would send Matt Garza, Fernando Perez and minor-league pitcher to the Cubs for Chris Archer, Hak-Ju Lee, Brandon Guyer, Sam Fuld and Robinson Chirinos. What does this mean for the Mets, and could they have swung a similar deal? Garza is an extreme fly-ball pitcher with a 6.6K/9. To get him, the Cubs sent their best pitching prospect (Chris Archer), their minor league [...]

NL East Report – Lunatic Fringe
Braves Second baseman Dan Uggla agreed to a five-year contract that will keep him with the Atlanta Braves through the 2015 season. Atlanta said a long-term deal with the two-time All-Star had been their goal since they acquired him in a trade with Florida in November. A report on MLB’s website said the deal was worth $62 million. Uggla hit .287 with 33 home runs and 105 RBI for the Marlins in 2010, ranking him [...]

Jeff Francis Closing In On Decision
As the Mets search for starting pitching continues, one pitcher they’ve spoken to has apparently come close to making a decision. According to the Denver Post, former Rockies pitcher Jeff Francis is close to making a decision. The Mets have been interested in Francis, and are waiting to see if they were the team Francis wants to play for in 2011. Last month, Tracy Ringolsby of FoxSports.com was reporting that the Mets offered Jeff Francis a [...]

Hall Of Fame Pitcher Bob Feller Dead at 92
Hall of Famer, former Cleveland Indian, Bob Feller passed away this evening from an acute form of Leukemia at the age of 92. “Rapid Robert” won 266 games in 18 seasons all with the Indians, was once “clocked” at 104 mph. At the time, it was difficult to gauge how fast pitchers threw since Radar guns had yet to be invented. I remember seeing video of Feller in his prime throwing a fastball with a [...]
