While reading an article about Tim McCarver this morning, I was led to this piece by Samantha Carr who profiles McCarver’s career both as a player and broadcaster. McCarver will be honored during the Hall of Fame induction ceremony this summer. after winning the 2012 Ford C. Frick Award for excellence in broadcasting. While I was there, another link on the National Baseball Hall of Fame website grabbed my attention; BBWAA HOF Election Rules. I always […]
I thought I’d share some interesting 2012 predictions from Joe Sheenan of Sports Illustrated, who lists Wilpon among some his prophecies. 1. The Marlins won’t get a playoff spot for their money. The Marlins committed $191 million over six years to Jose Reyes, Mark Buehrle and Heath Bell, then fell short in their pitches to C.J. Wilson and Albert Pujols. That may be costly. The Marlins are certainly better for adding the three; however, they currently project to win about 84-85 […]
An MLB official told Tom Haudricourt of the Journal-Sentinel that there’s little to no chance that 2011 MVP Ryan Braun will win his appeal of a 50-game suspension for using a banned substance. Braun’s appeal of that positive drug test and pending 50-game suspension will be heard later this month. Braun proclaimed his innocence after results of the drug test were leaked but has remained silent pending the conclusion of his appeal. Rumors have since surfaced that his […]
According to NESN, Roy Halladay was on a fishing trip in the Amazon with Chris Carpenter, B.J. Ryan and professional fisher Skeet Reese, when he and Reese stumbled upon a local boy being attacked by an anaconda. Here is what happened according to Reese’s recent blog post: “Me and Doc Halladay even came across a local, sitting bare naked on a tree by the river. What we were able to figure out is that he was […]
I found it very interesting how creative both sides were in constructing the contracts for Jose Reyes and the Marlins, and Albert Pujols and the Angels.. Both players got huge deals, but each one took less money up front to help their teams in the next two years. ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick reported that Pujols’ 10-year contract was back loaded so that the Halos could afford to sign C.J. Wilson. The Marlins used their savings on Reyes’ backloaded […]
According to Tim Brown of Yahoo Sports, former Met Carlos Beltran has signed a two-year deal worth $25 million dollars with the St. Louis Cardinals. Beltran reportedly turned down a couple of three-year offers to join St. Louis for a chance to contend. Last season, Beltran batted .300/.385/.525 in 598 plate appearances for the Mets and Giants, but more importantly stayed healthy all year long. The Twins meanwhile, signed starting pitcher Jason Marquis who the Mets […]
According to Keith Law of ESPN, the Oakland Athletics will trade LHP Gio Gonzalez to the Washington Nationals for four minor leaguers; right-handers A.J. Cole and Brad Peacock, left-hander Tom Milone and catcher Derek Norris. Three of the players the Nats gave up were on their top-ten prospects list. Gonzalez, 25, will be under team control through the 2015 season and joins what is now a solid, young rotation brimming with talent and upside. Meanwhile, the A’s continue to sell everything but the […]
The Texas Rangers have won the posting auction of Japanese right-hander Yu Darvish with a record $51.7M bid, sources tell Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports. The Japanese phenom’s agent, Arn Tellem. issued the following statement: “The Rangers are an extraordinary franchise in an exceptional city with equally exceptional fans,” Tellem said. ’”Yu is honored to be prized so highly and recognized as a once-in-a-generation pitcher. We look forward to getting negotiations underway.” The Rangers now have until January […]
Former Met Endy Chavez is headed to the Baltimore Orioles according to Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun. Chavez will earn $1.5 million in 2012 with the potential to earn another $500,000 in performance bonuses. Chavez, 33, played in 83 games last season with the Texas Ranger, batting .301 with five homers, ten stolen bases and 37 runs scored in 256 at-bats. The Mets were reportedly interested in bringing Chavez back, but Endy may have become too costly for the […]
