Last week, I profiled high school pitcher Brady Aiken. We’ll keep it on the high school side of things this week but shift it to a position player (probably). This week we’ll go in-depth on shortstop Nick Gordon — son of former closer Tom and brother of Dodgers shortstop Dee. He’s ranked in the 10-20 range by most experts, placing him right in the Mets cross-hairs. Nick Gordon, Olympia H.S (FL) Position: SS/RHP Height: 6’2 Weight: […]
Last week we looked at high school catcher Alex Jackson. This week we’ll switch it over to the pitching side, looking at one of the top prep arms in the upcoming draft, Brady Aiken. Most rankings have Aiken in the 7-10 range, which means he is likely a player the Mets are paying close attention to. Brady Aiken, Cathedral Catholic H.S (CA) Position: Pitcher Height: 6’4 Weight: 210 Bats/Throws: Left/Left Aiken is a lanky, projectable kid […]
Alex Jackson, Rancho Bernardo H.S (CA) Position: C/RF Height: 6’2 Weight: 210 Bats/Throws: R/R Last week we took a look at high school shortstop Jacob Gatewood. We’ll keep it in the high school ranks this week and take a look at a fellow Californian in Alex Jackson– a high-ceiling, potential top five pick that I’ll be hoping the Mets can get their hands on. Jackson is listed at 210, but he’s probably bigger than that– and […]
Now that all the sorting out has been completed, the Mets will officially be selecting in the No. 10 slot for the 2014 First Year Player Draft. The Mets “earn” a protected pick going into the 2013-14 offseason. Here’s the official order for next June’s first round which includes the consolation pick for the Toronto Blue Jays: 1. Astros (2013 record: 51-111) 2. Marlins (62-100) 3. White Sox (63-99) 4. Cubs (66-96) 5. Twins (66-96) 6. Mariners (71-91) 7. Phillies (73-89) 8. Rockies (74-88) 9. Blue Jays (74-88) 10. Mets (74-88) 11. Blue Jays (for failure […]
In an interesting move, the Mets drafted three high school players with their first three picks of the 2013 draft. They were all very interesting picks, as New York selected a first baseman, a right handed pitcher, and an outfielder, respectively. When I mean interesting, I mean that they all have very, very high ceilings in their respective categories. Dominic Smith leads this pack with his all-around package as a plus hitting and defensive projections. […]
In the second round of the MLB draft on Thursday, the Mets passed on Stanford outfielder Austin Wilson. Wilson would have been a risky selection, but he also had a very high upside. Instead the Mets drafted high school pitcher Andrew Church. Church could turn out to be solid pick in the future, but I feel the Mets made a mistake passing on Wilson. Austin Wilson is an extremely talented outfielder, and he had one […]
Here are the results of the 11th – 40th rounds of the Mets 2013 MLB Draft. I will have a post up later today entailing a few notes on the draft overall to wrap up the draft coverage this weekend. Interesting note: Our 17th – 25th round picks were ALL right-handed pitchers. Go figure. We did not select a left-handed pitcher until the 29th round. All scouting reports here provided courtesy of MLB.com. 11th round: […]
In a conference call this afternoon, Mets VP of player development Paul DePodesta characterized the first two days of the 2013 MLB Draft as very productive, adding that he was “thrilled with the way everything has turned out.” DePodesta said the Mets have had more moments of jubilation, when players they wanted fell to them, than those where they missed getting the players they wanted. With regard to the drafting high school players with their […]
The first 73 picks of the ’13 MLB Draft have come and gone — but that doesn’t mean there isn’t still value on the board. Here are five names I hope the Mets can target in Round 3: Jonathan Denney, C, Yukon High School, 6’2”, 205 LBs, R/R Big risk/reward pick here with the high school catcher Jon Denney, but it could work out for the Mets in a big way. You always want to […]
