Chris Schwinden had a decent outing tonight, but Eddie Kunz gave up a run in the 6th to blow a save, then Eric Niesen got CRUSHED for 5 runs on 5 hits (3 homers) in 1.1 innings to put the game well out of reach, all 3 homers given up by Niesen were in the 7th inning.

The Mets rallied from 7-1 and 9-5 down to tie this game with 4 in the 8th (gee…) only to lose after giving up 2 in the 10th. The Mets had a pair of 4 run innings, the 3rd and 8th, with Sean Ratliff delivering the game tying PH 3 run HR in the 8th, after Zach Lutz HRed earlier in the inning. Mark Cohoon got crushed again for 7 runs (5 earned) on 8 hits in 2.2 innings, but it was Manuel Alvarez who gave up the pair in the 10th to take his 1st EL loss.

The Mets offense did their job with 12 hits and 3/5 BB/K, while going 6 for 10 with RISP and leaving 5 on base. Zach Lutz, Saloman Manriquez and Jose Coronado had multi hit games, while Raul Reyes and Kirk Nieuwenhuis took 0-fers.

Josh Stinson got absolutely OBLIERATED today for the first time in 11 starts, giving up 7 runs on 7 hits and 3 walks in just 2.1 innings, but his offense was en fuego today, so he got a ND. Dylan Owen pitched 3.2 innings of relief to pick up his 4th EL victory, he allowed just a hit and 2 walks.

The Mets aforementioned offense crushed SeaDog pitching for 14 hits and 3 walks en route to 12 runs, while striking out just 4 times, hitting 3 HRs, and going 6 for 15 (.400) with RISP and leaving just 4 on base. Nick Evans, Josh Satin, Marshall Hubbard and Zach Lutz had multi hit games, while Mike Nickeas (0 for 3, BB, .293) took the only 0-fer of the game.

A- New York Penn League: Brooklyn 12/9/0, Lowell 9/14/4

The Cyclones built an early 5-2 lead (after 3 1/2) only to watch Mitch Houck implode in the bottom half, giving up 5 runs without escaping the inning (6 total scored in the frame). The teams traded runs in the 5th, before Brooklyn came back from 9-6 down with 1 in the 6th and 2 in the 7th to tie (Cory Vaughn HR), then 3 in the 9th to win. Houck gave up 7 runs total on 6 hits in 3.2 innings, but Wes Wrenn did great in long relief, allowing just a run on 7 hits in 4 innings for his 2nd win.

The Mets also had 2 walks, while striking out 4 times, and were 7 for 17 (.412) with RISP and left 8 on base. Nieuwenhuis, Sean Ratliff and Mike Nickeas had 3 hit games, while Raul Reyes had another multi hit game, his 6th in 12 games with Binghamton. Nick Evans and Jon Malo (0 for 4, run, RBI, .222) took 0-fers.

Roy Merritt got the win with 1.2 scoreless innings in relief, after Eric Niesen and Eddie Kunz got torched for 8 runs between them, 4 each. Niesen in 1.2 innings, and Kunz in 3.2 innings. Come Rule V time, the Mets should consider DFAing Eddie Kunz, he’s a BUST of a prospect, so much for the quick moving reliever idea in 2007 (haha).

The Mets bullpen has been flat awful the last two days, today it was Derrick Ellison, a 30 something journeyman who got roughed up for 2 runs on a hit and walk in 0.1 innings to blow the save and take his 2nd loss. Really, if he’s going to put up a 5+ era in AA at 31 years of age, the Mets should just cut him and get someone who doesn’t suck to take his place. Ellison’s horrible outing ruined a very good one from Michael Antonini, who gave up 2 runs on 4 hits in 7 innings and should’ve gotten his 5th win.

The Mets offense had 6 hits and 2 walks, but struck out 15 times, 10 of them against the Thunder starter David Phelps. The went 1 for 7 with RISP (.143) and left 7 on base. Luis Hernandez had the only multi hit game, while Marshall Hubbard (0 for 4, 3 Ks, .253), DJ Wabick (0 for 3, 2 Ks, .280), Josh Satin (0 for 4, 2 Ks, .320) and Brahiam Maldonado all took 0-fers.

The Gnats avoided a Detroit Tigers-esque collapse by winning today and clinching their division in the first half. The Gnats scored early and often, withstanding one powerful Augusta rally, a 4 run bottom of the 5th, to close the game to 6-5. The Gnats responded with 1 in the 7th and 2 in the 9th to ice it. Jim Fuller picked up the win, and Michael Powers pitched a scoreless 9th to end things. The Gnats had five players (3 through 7 in the order) with multi hit games, those five combined to go 12 for 22 with 5 RBI and 7 runs scored. Michael Fisher (0 for 3, run, 2 BBs, .354), Alex Gregory (0 for 3, run, RBI, BB, K, .252) and Cesar Puello took 0-fers.
