Isn't It Ironic... Don't Ya Think...
I love this game! There's nothing else like it...
Yesterday one of our regular readers pointed me to a fact that has gone widely unnoticed by many Mets fans. He told me that the only two Mets batting over .300 were Ryan Church and Brian Schneider. That's right... the two players we got in the much maligned Lastings Milledge trade were the top two hitters on the Mets. Sorry for ever doubting you Omar, can you ever forgive me?
| NAME | GP | AB | R | H | 2B | 3B | HR | TB | RBI | BB | SO | SB | CS | BA | OBP | SLG | OPS |
| Ryan Church | 33 | 127 | 27 | 41 | 6 | 1 | 6 | 67 | 25 | 12 | 30 | 1 | 1 | .323 | .387 | .528 | .915 |
| B. Schneider | 20 | 69 | 5 | 22 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 25 | 9 | 10 | 11 | 0 | 0 | .319 | .400 | .362 | .762 |
Yesterday during the broadcast on SNY, the poll question asked whether Ryan Church was the Mets MVP. The results were a virtual landslide... 89% of Mets fans who voted agreed...
Currently, Church has more runs scored than our leadoff hitter Jose Reyes (27-20), more RBI's than our cleanup hitter Carlos Beltran (25-18), and a higher OPS than our number three hitter David Wright (.915-.905).
As for Schneider, so far I like what I see. His mobility behind the plate has been affected by earlier injuries, but he seems to be coming around and his game calling has been solid. Surprisingly, his bat has been a big plus so far.
The bottom line is that this team would have been in a dreadful quandry had we not made this trade. Lo Duca has hardly played this season and when he has it's been underwhelming to say the least. Milledge has been just as bad when you consider his .258 average, 11 RBI and 26 strikeouts... not to forget his fine for being late... again...

Good call Joe. I was very happy w/ this trade when it went down because I felt we were losing a very immature player and gaining 2 players who were veteran guys and positions we needed to fill. I never even thought for the life of me that the trade would end up going this well. Can you imagine if we didn't have these 2 on the team, even w/ Schneider's limited AB's?
Personally, I'm gonna be ordering a Ryan Church #19 jersey before the all-star game. Vote Church for all-star!!!

God it feels good to be right, again :o) ha ha where are you doubters hiding. Haven't you all learned not to 2nd guess me :p
Happy Mother's Day :0)

Well I was one of those doubters and I guess by his apology to Omar, Joe was too. So we're not all hiding, lol. I really loved this post.

Hey Joe good post. I still can't believe the stats sometimes. It kind of makes you shake your head when people that are new and don't have roots in the organization like some others are making this club look really good. Hope this new blood can spark something in the rest of the team. It is still a little early in the season but if we don't start winning soon first place will start pulling away like it is right now.
COME ON!! LETS GO METS!!!!!

It's a little too ironic...it's like rai-eeeee-ain on yer wedding day...it's a free riiiiiide when yer already late...sorry I couldn't resist. Admittedly I was a bit skeptical about trading a guy who was considered a top prospect for Church and Schneider, but I'm happy that thus far, my fears have been put to rest.Keep it up guys!(Note to the other guys...START HITTING ALREADY!)

I was a doubter and I'm coming out of hiding to say that I've never been happier being wrong! Keep doing your thing, Mr. Church!

Yes cause of course Brian Schneider will continue to bat .319. He's a lifetime .254 hitter. And he's not the dynamic defensive player we were promised.
Church has been great for the first month and a half of the season, you can't argue that.
The trade was terrible because of the fact that Milledge is young and full of potential. He is still full of potential. For the first thirty games of the season, the trade looks to be in the Mets favor, but in five years, Schneider will be in an old folks home and Church will be back to hitting .270 with 15 home runs and 70 rbis.

God forbid a player give some fans a high five.
The other players on the team were upset about him giving the fans high fives, because they usually charge for high fives.
Milledge is 22, he's got plenty of time to mature into the player that Omar Minaya wouldn't trade for Manny Ramirez.
Manny Ramirez could have been a Met, but Omar Minaya wouldn't trade Lastings Milledge.

I think you're being very judgemental at a very small sample size; not that I don't think the trade should have never been done, it was a good trade that the Mets needed. The Mets cannot wait for Milledge to grow into a player with an aging, veteran club to try to win it all. I however think that the comparisons you put on Wright, Reyes, Beltran and Delgado are a small sample size of what they capable of doing. Schneider and Church are clicking on all cylinders. As a sum, I think you are being convienent.
If or when Lastings can put it together, he's going to be a quality baseball player. May be not a quality teammate, but he should put up the numbers coaches, scouts, even fans think he should. But it is important that the Mets win now, and that's more important than anything else. If we have anything to be concerned about, it is Reyes and Delgado looking lost at the plate.

Their where two trade talks prior to the 2005 trade deadline that involved Manny to the Mets. One was a three way deal that had Julio Lugo, Manny and Dennys Baez going to the Mets and Milledge, Heilman among others going to the Red Sox and prospects from the Mets and Red Sox going to the Rays. There was also talks of a deal not involving the Rays. In each of the trade proposals the Mets agreed to send Milledge as part of the deal it was the Red Sox who didn't feel they where getting enough in return. They eventually asked for Reyes or Wright and then the Mets said no deal. There was never a proposal that involved Milledge and Heilman that the Mets turned down. The rumors that Minaya rejected a Milledge plus deal for Manny are not true.

Good to see you back Christian! I remember that rumored deal...Manny can hit but I dunno how he would last in the field unless he found a place to pee between innings like at Fenway...;)

Hey Christian - you were NOT the only one that was right! I too, was in favor of this the whole time! - nah nah nah nah!!!
I love these guys........and Count - his high fives had NOTHING to do with it.......

At least the Mets made the right move because Milledge was a problem for the team with his antics on and off the field. His showboating last year cost the Mets the NL East crown When the Marlins got angry and won the last game of the season.
Posted by: D.C. | May 11, 2008 08:54 PM
no, what cost the mets the crown was their inability to hit in the last 20 days of september, the starting pitching being able to get deep into games (other than maine's near no-no), and the bullpen's ineffectiveness down the stretch. Then in the last game it was Tom Glavine's inability to get out of one inning. I don't care how fired up a team is... a veteran pitcher should be able to get out of the first inning.
If you were to blame ANYTHING on the marlins being fired up, maybe it could be the bench clearing incidents on the field? Milledge had little to do w/ the mets losing that game, other than his, and everyone else's, inability to score runs. Let's face it... the mets still could have won that game. Twice Ramon Castro came up to the plate w/ the bases loaded and pounded that ball to the fence only to have it just be a bit shy.
So lets call a spade a spade.... if you wanna blame anyone for losing the title, blame the entire team

I like your stance on this Joe but I'm gonna have to go ahead and sort-of disagree with you here. In lines with what someone else said above, it's not only WAAAAY too early to judge this trade - this to me is more of a long-term vs short-term thing - I am totally not expecting Ryan Church to hit .300+ for the rest of the season (but if he does, gravy) and Schneider? You know the old saying about if you don't have a catcher, you have a lot of passed balls? I think a gorilla behind the mound would be a better defensive catcher at this point. Oh yeah, but Mike Pelfrey with his $1mm arm and $0.10 head needs his personal catcher. At 24 years old. If anything this trade screamed - we need to win now. Believe me, I'm happy with their performance thus far since the rest of the team took a crap on April. But ask me again in September when we're ready to ship these guys back to Washington.

Hi Coop, I like the Casey Stengel reference... I know it's early, but I hated this trade at first and now I'm a believer.
