Game Recap: Nationals 10 -- Mets 4
The Mets got trounced by the Nationals in the first game of a four game series, taking game one by a score of 10-4. Notch this up as another frustrating loss for the New York Mets. And cue the Willie Randolph haters..now!
Nelson Figueroa made the start for the Mets, and tallied only one scoreless inning out of five. Figueroa allowed one run in the second, third, and fourth. He then let up three in the fifth inning. Of the six runs he allowed, four were earned.
He struggled with the control, allowing five hits and walking five. Figueroa struck out four while on the bump. Figueroa walked in a run in the third.
He was just not very effective, at all. Usually he feeds off the energy at Shea, but it seemed pretty dead tonight. He needs a big crowd behind him. I hate to say it, but Figueroa's magic may be running out.
Jorge Sosa stunk, again. Sosa's line: 1 IP, 4 hits, 4 earned runs, 2 BB, 1 K.
Cut him. Now.
Duaner Sanchez pitched a scoreless and hitless inning, striking out one. Joe Smith and Billy Wagner both looked excellent as they both struck out the side in their respective innings.
Beautiful. I love Joe Smith. Let me make it easy, Mets. Cut Sosa, keep Smith. It's not too hard.
The Mets pounded out 12 hits, but only managed four runs. Odalis Perez threw 6 1-3 innings, scattering 11 hits and only allowing four runs.
The team got on the board early, scoring one in each of the first three innings. Carlos Beltran picked up an RBI single in the first, driving in David Wright. In the second, Damion Easley crushed a solo home run to deep center field to lead off the inning. Easley picked up another RBI, driving in Moises Alou from second with a single to right. Alou, who doubled earlier in the inning, had a nice headfirst slide to beat the tag at home.
And from there, they were held in check until the seventh inning. I thought this was going to be one of those crazy blowouts where they can't help but score, but I couldn't have been more wrong. They looked flat. Perez wasn't excellent, there was no need for them to shut down like that. And for the love of everything holy, don't blame Willie.
Wright went yard with no one on base in the seventh.
Yay.
Game Ball: Easley.

They really do need to get rid of Sosa. I don't care if he can give you multiple innings if he's gonna be giving up multiple runs every time out. Plus Joe Smith is a sexual tyrannosaur.

Well Figgy was due for a bad game sooner or later. I also agree that Sosa is the logical choice to go.

Is Sosa the new Mota??? That sucks.

Horrible!! Pitching wins and loses games.
Good recap - but.....I really didn't think the offense looked flat. Especially early on - every time Figgy gave one up they fought right back, in fact, I thought I saw a bit of fire.
Of course, once it got out of control, and the pitching handed the game to the Nats, I mean seriously, that would let the air out of anything.
Pitching by Fig and Sos - a big fat 0
Offense - inspired (early in the game)

Well this was a frustrating loss. This loss is Figs fault and his inability to find the strikezone. When I say he had NO CONTROL I mean he had NOOO COOONTROOOLLL!!
As I watched him come out inning after inning just barely getting by I kept wondering ok when is he gonna get pulled because it is only a matter of time before he gets taken for more than just 1 run.
Ok I know I'm not going to be the only one but Willie definitely has to do a better job at this type of decision making. He has that as a major flaw. He doesn't know when to pull pitchers. It didn't help the last game of the season last year either. When you see your starting pitcher doesn't have it don't sacrifice the rest of your team for one guy.
I say end his night early let him try again next time. People are gonna say he only had two hits. I know, I know but that was only cause he couldn't find the strike zone. Even the opposing pitcher had an amazing night at the plate. 3 runs of two hits. That is obsurd.
When I don't do my job right at work my supervisor doesn't let me keep screwing up especially if it is going to affect the rest of the workers. Come on Willie get fired up be confrontational. Leaving people in past their time is your kryptonite. It killed the last game of the season last year with Tom Glavine. Your whole season is on the line and you let him stay in for 8 runs. I would've pulled him at 3 runs. It's the whole season on the line. But that is yesterday's news. Sorry I still need to heal. Anyway my point is if they don't got it sit'em down.
I'm starting to think the players really don't want to play for him. There lack of passion and energy is making it hard to watch a game. And you can't go by what they say either cause people aren't always telling the truth.
I love this team and always will. I will keep watching games even if it pains me but some changes have to be made SERIOUSLY!

Take your pick... Wally Backman or Lee Mazzilli?

"I thought this was going to be one of those crazy blowouts where they can't help but score, but I couldn't have been more wrong."
-Me, in the recap.
They looked flat AFTER this. Sorry if it wasn't clear.

I like Figueroa, but he clearly didn't have it last night. I think the childish actions of the opposing bench was something he couldn't turn a deaf ear to. But whatever, hopefully he'll find his best stuff again.
As far as Sosa is concerned, sorry Jorge, but you gotta go. And what's the deal with wanting to option Smith and keep Sosa? THE IDEA IS TO KEEP THE GOOD AND GET RID OF THE BAD. DOES ANYONE IN MANAGEMENT REALIZE THIS OR IS THIS JUST SOMETHING THE FANS KNOW? And even if they think Sosa can turn it around, why not Heilmann? Has anyone watched this man this year? He wasn't much to brag about last year, but this year he's a horror!!!!!
I think Willie has overstayed his welcome and the time has come for him to pack his stuff and head out of town. Maybe Joe has a bench job for him in the other borough.
You asked Backman or Mazzilli? At this point, anyone could do better. We need someone who can motivate this team. Someone who will stand up to Omar and his ridiclious personnel moves.
You want the fans to stop booing? Get someone who can get this team to start winning and you'll see Shea start jumping again.
