What The Heil Is Going On?

I am not one to second guess managers, but Willie Randolph decision making with the pitching staff has clearly backfired on him and it may cost the Mets a chance to piece together a winning streak early in the 2008 season before the Braves and Phillies do.

I am totally clueless to why Willie has constantly gone to Aaron Heilman in close games? It is clear that his confidence is either shot or he is nursing an injury that he is not telling anyone about. Either way opposing hitters and no namers like Felipe Lopez don't seem to mind as they are having fun teeing off on the former starter, set-up man, now long reliever. Jorge Sosa has fared no better. Is Willie sticking with these guys because he believes in them or is he trying to increase their value? I am clueless on this matter, but I do know that his faith in these guys are costing the Mets games here in the early going.

I would also like to know what Willie has against Oliver Perez? This is twice now that Willie has not let Perez pitch out of trouble in the sixth inning. The only way Perez can develop into a consistent pitcher is to learn from his mistakes. Willie seems to be afraid to let Perez make mistakes. Is he upset about his arbitration winning in the off-season?

The way Willie is managing his bullpen now, I would not be surprised if the entire pen is all used up for the season by the all-star break. I would also not be surprised if he is forced to activate his pitching coach Rick Peterson to take the strain off of the pen.

I have to sadly agree with 100%. What Willie is doing makes no sense to me.

I've been saying since day 1 that he doesn't know how to manage the pitching staff. A lot of people always say that is just because he was a Yankee and I hate the Yankees.

I even thought that at first maybe I was hating on him because of his past with the Yanks but that's not the case. He wears that Met uniform, he signed a contract with The New York Mets, he is being paid by the New York Mets.

But after the last few seasons I realize now that he is clueless about what it takes to manage a pitching staff.

Heilman is the Mota of last year, you know no matter how many runs he gives up Willie is going to keep bringing him out game after game.

I think Omar needs to really talk to his manager and soon.

On a less serious note do you think the umpires will let Peterson pitch with THE JACKET?

Peterson is just as much to blame for the pitching troubles as Willie.

I was thinking the same Heilman/Mota comparison myself.

As dissappointed in Delgado that I am I still will not boo him. If your at the game you gotta get behind him and support him, booing him will not help him turn it around.

@Vegas Chris. You're totally right about that, I've been to a few games this season already and I haven't booed once at Delgado, Heilman or any other Met. I've groaned and moaned but I will never boo a player on my team.

ha ha ha this notion that Willie can't manage a pitching staff is hilarious, I've heard the same thing about every other manage. Davey Johnson can't manage a pitching staff, Bobby Valentine can't manage a pitching staff, Art Howe can't manage a pitching staff, and on and on and on. According to the fans no manager can manage a pitching staff. The thing is if pitchers struggle the manager will get criticized, but seriously how is it Willie's fault if a pitcher can not get people out?

i have to agree with Christian completely here taking words right out of my mouth pretty much. people need to realize the manager just tells pitchers when they are to enter a game, they cant execute and pitch for them too! also im 100% against anyone booing any of MY/OUR Mets, im sorry i dont care who you are but your not a true fan if you are booing your own team. i will be at the game this monday and when Delgado or Heilman are announced im gunna stand up and cheer because they are still my team and until otherwise they will get my support. can we start a "dont boo our Mets" campaign?? lol

C'mon Met Fans. We all follow the team intently and while we agree there are glaring problems with the bullpen, I have more concerns with 1 thru 8.

Over the past 150 games, we are 2 games under .500 and outside of Wright and Beltran [on occasion] we aren't scoring too many opposing pitchers nowadays.

In act, if not for Church's clutch hitting we wouldn't have half the wins we got.

So you want Perez to learn from his mistakes but not Heilman?

This is a team, and when someone struggles, someone we will need "in a pinch" we are going to have to live through these bumps especially in April.

PS - Someone in another Willie bashing post mentioned the great Bobby Cox and (paraphrasing) why can't Willie learn something from him.

Sure he has a great record, can't deny etc...

Why did he take Tim Hudson out after THREE innings and taxed his bullpen? Hmmmm food for thought......

Speaking of Davey Johnson...Does Omar have his cell phone number? Davey has a reputation for immediately making teams better (Mets, Cincy, Balt)...

I gotta agree with the earlier posts that state that it is not all Willie's fault the bullpen and even starting pitching on some occasions can't get people out.

However, he does have some level of responsibility because he puts certain pithcers in like Heilman and Sosa in day after day and almost every time they get rocked.

Sometimes, the "I'm your biggest supporter routine so go pitch another inning because I believe in you," routine won't work.

I think its time that certain pitchers don't just get a night off but maybe a few days off to work their pitches in practice. I know that is what spring training is for BUT!, it is clear that it wasn't enough with some.

Like everyone said earlier if the pitchers were doing AMAZING we wouldn't have all these posts about firing Willie and we all know that. But as I stated earlier he does call the shots so maybe he can start making some better choices especially while it is still early in the season and there is a season to still save.

It would really suck if he got fired on account of players not playing up to par or better but sadly in this game that happens all to often and we saw that clearly with Joe Torre last year.

In all honesty I would hate to seem him leave for the wrong reasons and right now the players are making his decisions look like those wrong reasons.

Ron Mel - your numbers are incorrect. Over the last 150 games Mets are 6 games OVER .500

On May 12 of last year Mets had a record of 22-13 from that point on they went 66 - 61 in the next 127 games. You take the 12-11 start thus far this year and the record over the last 150 games is 78 - 72.

I was being sarcaastic when I said "activate Rick Peterson". I meant as an actual pitcher not as a coach. I thought it was funny.
