Another Grand Performance From Willie's Guys

"He's my guy. I stick with my guys."

I'm sure there's no need for me to reveal the source of that quote. After all we've been hearing those same words day after day for over a year now.

You can't fault a manager for showing confidence in his players, but at some point you have to draw a distinction between performances that most often lead to wins and those that lead to losses. I have two questions for Willie about last nights embarrassing loss.

1. Why would you bring in Aaron Heilman to pitch in the sixth inning of a tie game with two runners on base after being burned by him three times already so early in the season?

2. Why would you stick with him after he walked Lastings Milledge to load the bases?

It has often been said that those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Hasn't there been enough history on Aaron Heilman to know that he is clearly ineffective so far this season? It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that his fastballs are all up and he is relying to much on a changeup that lost its potency because he throws it too many times in the count.

What are we paying Rick Peterson for? Is there one pitcher you can name that has shown any improvement from last season? Why are John Maine and Oliver Perez still the same promising pitchers with the same lack of focus and inability to work deep into a game?

Am I the only one who thinks Heilman should have gotten the hook after he walked Lastings Milledge? Especially after seeing that scorching laser he drove down the left field line that just missed being a bases clearing double. Knowing how poorly Heilman has performed of late, shouldn't have Joe Smith and Scott Schoeneweis have already been throwing in the bullpen and on call for the first hint of trouble?

I don't know about you, but as far as I am concerned Joe Smith, Duaner Sanchez and Scott Schoeneweis are the only guys I trust in that bullpen after Billy Wagner.

Last night Gary Cohen revealed that the Mets' bullpen have allowed three of the four grand slams hit so far this season. Pathetic...

When will it be time to usher in the Eddie Kunz era? Kunz is our top relief prospect and closer of the future. Obviously it's too early to claim the mantra of closer of the future, but it may be the perfect time for "the reliever who can throw strikes of the future".

With ERA's hovering around 7.00, can Eddie Kunz do any worse. Maybe I'm just talking out of frustration. Maybe I'm just tired of seeing the same guys get trotted out there and blowing would-be wins for us. Maybe I'm just tired...

not a bad idea, especially out of frustration, kunz is the future, and we will see him later.
the problem comes down to management. when the big 3[santana, OP, maine] are on the mound, they MUST pitch INTO the 7th or later...end of story, whether it takes 90, 100, or 130 pitches. willie must try to get this out of them. willie bails in the 6th all the time. IMO, you must let the SP decide whether you win or lose unless: 1-he has TOTALLY lost the strike zone[tommy last game, last year]
2-his velocity has fallen way down
3-he is hanging pitches up[usually related to fatigue]
outside of that...let them get in + out of trouble...the 6th inning is not for RP.
now, its omar's turn...
cut the fat now...
delgado, endy, & sosa are entirely expendible, and to a lesser extent, heilman & show. hell, you can move all 5.

if its my team....i make all 5 of them available for trade.
1-replace delgado-platoon easley & carp, have carp take endy's spot[sorry buddy] until we add another 1b option [morales, nady, hatteberg, phillips, millar, casey, rivera, etc...]
if you can hit above .240, hit decently with RISP, and own a 1b glove...your an upgrade right now!
2-BP: rincon[loogy], smith[roogy], feliciano + wise[general, sanchez + wags[8/9]
options as long man-armas jr, vargas, bostick...all doing well in AAA. eventually figgy + duq become options too. other depth-collazo, kunz, & muniz.
thats the depth we have if we lost heilman, sosa, & show! they are all viable players that can contribute, so we have some flexibility.

Omar...lets see some action here, force willie's hand...while your at it, force willie out!

Wayne Higgins from WFAN had a very telling quote last night. He said, "This is the same formula we saw in Chicago. It was a close game and then the opposing team borke it open. Except tonight it happened a little earlier, in the sixth inning, and in Chicago it happened a little later, in the eighth." That's very interesting, especially since Heilman was pitching the eighth in Chicago and he pitched the sixth yesterday.
What was Willie thinking. I personally believe there is no way Willie should still be manager after last season after the collapse. And now to go along with his lack of concern, he has lost the ability to manage a bullpen competently.
And I want blood.

I couldn't have said it any better...you took the words - ALL the words - right out of my mouth!

"LOST HIS ABILITY TO MANAGE THE BULLPEN?"

fyi....he never had any ability!

I'm having bad feelings about the team this year. It seems like they are lacking focus and are not ready to play. Poor fielding, very weak offense.

I'm happy with the Church/Schneider acquisition, and of course, Johann, but the bullpen really is in shambles and I have no confidence in Heilman and Sosa. The jury's still out on Schoenweiss and Feliciano.

whatdatmean - as much as you and others may want to see those moves happen they simply will not. Again the moves teams make during the first two months of the season are minor roster moves such as sending players down or calling someone up. Trade do not happen during this point of the season, no team is going to drastically change 20% of their roster in late April or early May so to its pointless to discuss it, it just won't happen.

Question for anyone who may know... Last night after Delgado caught a soft line drive in the 7th or 8th inning he got into a heated argument with the 1B ump. It was shown several times on the Nats broadcast (MLB.TV broadcast). They had no idea what could have caused the argument since there was no questionable call. Delgado just made the catch look at the ump who made the out call then Delgado reacted. Nats broadcasters where jokingly saying that the Delgado may have been upset that the ump didn't make a more enthusiastic out call, obviously they where just grasping at straws. Since i'm in Miami I do not have access to SNY (will be back in Jersey in May) My question is was anything said about the incident during the SNY broadcast or on the post game show?

the only way i can POSSIBLY see change happening is in a serious of steps phasing out delgado...
1-delgado starts to lose starts against lefties to easley
2-if he still sucks, he gets traded or released[very unlikely], and carp is promoted[as long as he does well in AAA] to platoon with easley
3-the mets trade for a everyday type 1b[hell freezes over]

the commitment to delgado is mindboggling. bench him now! give him a breather to get it together and use him in good match ups.

as far as the BP...i do see some change. show + heilman will be here, unless someone wants to overpay[but why?]. sosa + endy will likely be moved, or sosa dropped around mid-year. they have 1 too many in the BP now to make room for wise, and they will need to make 1 more spot for el duq or figgy[possibly both], when pedro returns. also, armas, collazo, bostick, stokes, + muniz are all doing great in AAA & rincon looked sharp in ST + has good #'s in the mexican league right now. anyone of them could earn call-ups if guys continue to struggle.

fact is, management has way too much loyalty to veterans. i dont see them learning any new tricks...but stranger things have happened!

Players do not get traded as a punishment. The only way Delgado gets traded is if another team see value in him. If a team needs a 1B or a DH they may take a chance on him but none the less Mets would most likely have to pick up a portion of his remaining salary and also pay the option buyout for next year.

If Carp gets called up at some point he will not be platooned, it would hurt his development. Players under the age of 26 have to play everyday, heck even many over that age need to play to stay sharp. Only a select few can adapt to limited playing time and succeed at it 99% of bench players or platoon players are either veterans in their mid to late 30's or players in their late 20's to early 30's who where not able to secure a starting role while in their early years. Carp being a 21 year old has to play every day either with the Mets or in the minors, he will not be called up to platoon or as long as Delgado is on the team, it just will not happen.

The commitment to veterans with large salaries is NOT a Mets thing its done all over baseball, I'm still mind boggled that so many fans do not understand that, its been that way for years. Veterans with high salaries will play its that simple regardless of how they perform. Should it be that way? No of course not it should be if you perform then you play but thats not reality, salary dictates who plays and who doesn't. Fans can complain till their blue in the face but things have been this way since salaries took off in the early 90's and most likely will stay this way. Teams are going to try to get their money's worth.

i agree with everything here except 1. the big pelf mike pelfrey is making strides and will have a 13 win season and next year will be the # 3 or 4 starter and win 15-16 games next year

I like Willie, and thought he deserved another chance after last year, but I'm starting to think he's not right for us. THIS TEAM IS LETHARGIC. Really, we look like the same team that finished last year. We need someone who's going to challenge these players, chew some freaking ass. Consider the Davey Johnson Part II Campaign started.

Get rid of Heilman and Scrubweis because they are not doing their jobs right now for the Mets. Can any Met fans tolerate these golfer ball relievers?

Heilman is baffling. He does have good stuff, and good velocity. His stuff is way to good to be allowing this many home runs. If you can throw 94-95, why would you rely so much on your changeup? Forget about trading Delgado, who's going to want him with that salary? We'd have to eat the salary and package him in with another player... How about calling Washington and asking about Dmitri Young? Or what about Tatis, can't he play 1st?
