As of today barring injury or trade there are 23 spots set in stone for opening day. These 23 include the following…

Pitchers (11)

Johan Santana

Pedro Martinez

Oliver Perez

John Maine

Orlando Hernandez

Billy Wagner

Aaron Heilman

Matt Wise

Jorge Sosa

Scott Schoenewies

Position players (12)

Brian Schneider

Carlos Delgado

Luis Castillo

Jose Reyes

David Wright

Moises Alou

Carlos Beltran

Ryan Church

Ramon Castro

Damion Easley

Marlon Anderson

Endy Chavez

Who would you like to see fill the final 2 spots?

Do you go with 12 pitchers and 13 positions players leaving room for another pitcher and another bench player or do you go with 11 pitchers and 14 position players?

Comments

leave the pitchers (pelfrey mostly) in the minors to marinate for a little bit. bring up an extra infielder (gotay most likely) and an extra outfielder/pinch hitter (pagan). i like the bullpen the way it is, and this would prevent willie from wearing pelfrey out before this summer when duque gets hurt.

In my opinion, I would like Tony Armas Jr. to fill one to help spot start in emergencies and long relief. Then carry another bat like Gotay to help on the bench.

you'd prefer Gotay and Pagan over Seanz or Clark?

anyone for carrying Sanchez?

Armas Jr. and Seanz.

I would Love to See Duaner and Gotay

Here is a list of a few possible option for the 2 remaining spots

Pitchers - Duaner Sanchez, Joe Smith, Steven Register, Tony Armas or Ricardo Ricon.

Position players - Ruben Gotay, Angel Pagan, Brady Clark, Olmedo Seanz or Jose Valentin.

Definitely Steve Register for one-lets at least get a quick glimpse of what we got in the rule 5 draft.

And the other spot I'd give to Brady Clark, I like the idea of having a somwhat speedy right hand hitting OF'er off the bench. If he has anything left in the tank he could make for a nice platoon partner with Ryan Church.

Sanchez, I think needs to prove himself a little. As of today we as fans can't make a judgement because we haven't seen how he is going to perform. This might be better debated near the end of Spring training...

One must remember thatg opening day rosters are not the rosters that will be used once all five starting pitchers are needed. There are enough days off early in the season to keep the number 5 picher (Hernandez)in extended spring training.

Duaner Sanchez (if healthy) has the inside track for the bullpen (followed by Armas and Lugo). Ruben Gotay (followed by Angel Pagan, and Brady Clark) for the bench position.

There will be competition for the last bench roster spot until Hernandez is called up in mid-April.

I'd go with 12 pitchers and 13 position players......Lets get a look at this guy Register, see what he has. And though I would love to see Gotay up in the majors, he would be wasting away there, and I think he has more potential than Hernandez. I would go with Hernandez or Clark off the bench

how is matt wise diffenity on the active roster and u spelt Schoeneweis wrong the i before e rule is not in effect here lol

the last 2 spots are gonna go to duaner sanchez and either ruben gotay or jose valentin id rather see jose start the year with us and if he dosent work call gotay up from aaa and i agree with sosa being the long man no t elduque or pelfrey cause id like to see pelfrey pitch every 5 days in the minors then rarley pitch as a long man or become into a reliver and u no elduque will go down eventually and then pelfrey can step in and fill those shoes

John - Matt Wise has 5 years of major league service time which grants him veteran status. With veteran status a player can NOT be sent down without his written consent. $750,000 of his $1.2 million is guaranteed if he doesn't make the team. No way is he going to accept being sent down at this stage in his career with veteran status and no way are the Mets going to let him go and still have to pay him. In other words Wise is a lock.

Vincent - Mets have no need for Valentin really, for starters he is one of the 5 worst situational hitters in the game over the last 10-15 years. The only value he has is leadership, D and the occasional worthless solo HR when the team doesn't need one.

1) JOSE VALENTIN

2) CHRISTIAN'S MOM WITH MY WEINER IN HER BUTT.

That was disrespectful and completely uncalled for Ed...
Let's keep the comments clean and about baseball. I know you are a Phillies fan and thats fine, but there is no reason for coming to a Mets fan site and insulting people. I have enjoyed talking to you before Ed and know you are above this kind of behavior so please, no more.

*Sorry for the double post...

well well ED how is childhood treating you? You enjoying High School? Those teenage years are something aren't they. So how old are you 14? 15? Yeah I know its not easy growing up trying to fit in with your fellow slackers, trouble makers and under age drinkers. yeah fun times isn't it ED. Let me ask you a question.. do your pants stay above your knees or do you need a tighter belt? How about wearing some pants that actually fit you. teenagers these days wow. ED this is not High School we are not your little buddies, this here is a mets fan site. Here we expect each other to act like a civilized human being. Would a night in prison knock some sense into you. How about I have your IP # traced.

i think they should carry Pelfrey for the first week just to have a six man rotation and if that were to happen johan would get the first start at shea this year facing the phillies. They should see how Pelfrey does against the Braves and then send him down, hopefully with something to look forward to.

On the other side, they will probably carry Seanz just because he has good numbers as a pinch hitter and it would be nice to see those w/ Marlon Anderson's as well. He is also a backup at first which we kind of need.

Andy - going with 6 starters is not a good idea. There are additional off days in April thus most teams (if not all) go with a 4 man rotation in order to keep pitchers on 4 days rest. If you where to go with 6 starters then some would be going on 5 or even 6 days of rest and that is not a good recipe for success. Pitchers need to pitch in order to stay sharp by extending their rest period your not helping them.

I agree with you on Seanz although I think the last bench spot will come down to Clark and Seanz.

Hey Metsman, hold off on the High school comments, cuz im a high school student too =/. I can trace the IP for you. Anyway.

I'm for dropping Show, and adding either Sanchez or register. Or Armas, since we need a Long Reliever?
I have alot of trust in the rest of the pen, and i do expect Wise to perform as well as any other bullpen player.

oh, and to position players, Pagan, Clark, or Saenz.

Gotay has no more options. He has to be put trough waivers before being sent to the minors. Gotay will take a spot and Sanchez will take a spot. There no doubt about that.

I agree with you on Sanchez. Most likely Mets will go with 12 pitchers and he will get the nod. However I do not see Gotay making the team. Mets have a lot of depth at 2B with Castillo, Easley, Marlon Anderson and even Anderson Hernandez. Also to boot the Mets aren't that high on Gotay to the point they even called him a one dimensional player. That doesn't sound like high praises.

The biggest problem I see with the active roster that Christian put up is that there's still no one to back up Delgado at 1st. We need a guy like Julio Franco or Shawn Green, and that man is Olmedo Saenz. Then, we have either Armas Jr. or Duaner Sanchez.
What ever happened to Burgos by the way? Is he still injured?
