Mets & Santana Remain Far Apart
According to ESPN.com, the New York Mets and star pitcher Johan Santana still remain far apart on a contract extension.
The Mets have until 5 p.m. ET on Friday to complete a deal for the star pitcher, but reports have said that the Mets and Santana differ on the dollars as well as the length of a deal.
It has also been reported the there is also a possibility that the talks could collapse without an agreement, though the odds of that appear to be slim.
The Mets have to give Santana what he wants. After finally making the trade to bring him to the Big Apple, the Mets have to complete the last step and sign him to a contract extension.
I'm sure the Mets will end up giving him what he wants, but in my opinion, Santana does seem to be very greedy, but that's something that the Mets should have expected.

Just like any other relationship, there will be negotiating.The heat will be on the Mets the later it gets and the Greenbergs know it.Johan WILL get what he wants and WILL pitch in Shea next year.As far as the Lohse thing goes it would be interesting but does that mean Pelfrey goes to the pen? I don't see it anyway, not after giving Johan his money...

Santana knows that he is in the drivers seat. But when it comes down to it he doesn't want to go back to Minnesota. Also the Greenberg's(his agents) and the Mets have a very good working relationship. It will go to the wire but in the end a deal will get done.

I just hate that we're taking so long. Santana's going to get what he's asking for. We know it, Johan knows it, and Omar knows it, so just give Santana the deal he's asking for and stop making me sweat!

The two sides are hamming and hawing over the sixth year.
$ 10 million signing bonus,
$132 million (6yrs@22 mil)
$ 5 million buyout of yr 7 vesting option or
$ 10 million bonus
$125 million (5yrs@25 mil)
$ 5 million buyout for 6th year option
Both of these ideas (140-150 million) blows away Zito or Zambrno's contracts.

Santana will not get exactly what he wants but he will get close to it. Negotiations is all about give and take. Mets give a little then Santana backs down a bit Mets give some more then Santana backs down a bit. They will agree at a spot that is acceptable to both sides.

I THINK THIS IS KILLING ME WAY MORE THAN THE PROCESS OF TRYING TO GET HIM...=/
ALL YOU CAN DO IS WAIT AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS, ALLTHOUGH YOU KNOW HE IS ALREADY A MET =D

Christian is right, it's about give and take.It's us...the fans that are sweating it more than the Mets or Johan are! Rest assured, we will be seeing a press conference early next week...

I'm not worried, there's no way they dangle this kind of carrot in front of us just to snatch it away because they can't compromise. No worries.

From my take if the reported sides are "far apart" It is suggested & implied that it is "at this moment". Meaning that a negotiation is both 2 sided and time sensitive. The Mets start at 140, Santana says 160 and at some point (assuming both sides are flexible) they agree somewhere in-between. I am very confident that the METS will get this done prior to Fridays 5pm deadline.

This is a joke! The Mets.com first story says, "Mets excited about possible Santana Addition." POSSIBLE! Just give him what he wants and shut up!

Adam, I think Pelfrey would be awesome out of the bullpen

Lets get real folks...do you think the mets will walk into the negotiations and say ok Mr. Santana here is a blank check, you fill in the amount and length of the contract. they have to make it look good....It is a done deal, but they have to make it look like they bargained back and forth...This is a DONE DEAL....DO NOT WORRY. !!!!!!!!!!

They had a total of 72 hours. Why wouldn't they use as much of it as they can to do and get a deal done? All there doing is using this time to try and see how much money they could save on Santana. If if ever came down to giving Santana what he want and not signing the man, they will give him what he wants. Omar Minaya knows what will happen if he is unable to sign Santana. There will be a riot infront of Shea and CitiField will be burned to the ground. Im sure that this deal will be done before 3.
