Another One Bites The Dust - Erik Bedard Traded To Seattle

It looks like the Baltimore Orioles have traded right handed, starting pitcher Erik Bedard to the Seattle Mariners according to several sources including the Seattle Times and the Baltimore Sun.

Apparently the Orioles will get back super-prospect Adam Jones who has been called back from Venezuela to undergo a physical.

When reached for comment today, Adam Jones said...

"I received a call from Seattle saying that there is no more playing for me and I can't do anything about that,'' Jones said. "I leave tomorrow morning... It sucks. I want to play. This is Game 4 of the finals and I really want to be there for my team, but it's something that all the guys understand. I really want to play, but I can't."

Although Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports has said the deal is completed, both teams have suggested that it is yet to be finalized, but confirmed something is imminent.

*** This was the second of the big three pitchers to slip through the hands of the New York Mets, with the other being Dan Haren. That leaves Johan Santana as the last viable option for a top of the rotation starter that is still available.

I find it interesting that Erik Bedard can be had for what amounts to one big outfield prospect and yet the Mets couldn't pry him away with a bundle of four prospects. I actually felt that Bedard was a better option for the Mets because he has two years until free agency.

Last season Bedard went 13-5 with an ERA of 3.16, and he struck out 221 batters in 182 innings. He is only 28 years old and has improved significantly each of his four years in the majors.

Johan Santana is officially the last big pitcher standing. Reports this weekend say that he will be traded within the next ten days. The Yankees, Red Sox and Mets are all said to be in the mix. Other rumors reported that if the Mets have truly taken Fernando Martinez off the table as has been reported, any discussions with the Mets are over. The Mets have now moved on to "Plan L", Livan Hernandez. As soon as the Mets get the official call from the Twins saying "NO DEAL", Hernandez will join his brother El Duque in the middle of the Mets rotation.

To say the truth, I don't really like Bedard, I know he is a great pitcher but I dunno... Just don't really see him fitting with the Mets, as I do Santana and used to Haren.

So Joe Blanton's not an option? WHY HAS OMAR MINAYA IGNORED JOE BLANTON. the A's are looking to trade him, he eats innings, he's still young, and he'd be considerably cheaper than Santana. I mean get Johan if you can but Joe Blanton can also be what this team's looking for.

I think we should wait just a bit here. MacPhail is denying there's been an agreement. Adam Jones or someone pretending to be him started a rumor that he was heading to Baltimore for a physical. MacPhail is apparently saying he's not. I'm sure by tomorrow we'll know the whole story.

Milo - A's took Blanton off the trading block about two weeks ago, he is no longer available.

Ferd C - As I have said many many times before... Never ever take seriously what a GM or high ranking official says publicly. Until a deal is official no matter how close it is they will deny it until an official announcement is made.

Whether there is a deal or not, or it's imminent or they're still working out the details, the fact remains that MacPhail said there is no agreement, and it's worth noting.

As for taking seriously, I would take the MacPhail story over what some reporter in Venezuela is saying any day of the week.

MacPhail can not say anything until the deal is official or he can face strict tampering charges. If one source is reporting a deal then it should be taken lightly but when multiple sources are reporting it then the deal is happening. Four sources have reported this, the Baltimore Sun, Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, Seattle Times and the Venezuela source, heck even Adam Jones himself has said he has been told he has been traded. FYI I have a degree in sports management and have worked in various positions in the baseball industry, I know the rules and I know how this stuff works. They may still be working out a few small details but the major part of a deal is done.

Bedard is lefthanded not right handed Joe D. Also you cant force a team to trade with you if they dont like what your offering so it means nothing to me that the Mariner's got him for just one big prospect.

I thought bedard was a lefty...

And is it surely too late to make an offer? I mean, this could just be a wake up call...

I'd rather Livan over Blanton. Sure, Blanton is more effective but which would you a rather, a starter with an ERA lower by about 1, or the higher ERA and keep 2 of your best prospects and a main piece in your pen? (Gomez, Mulvey, and Heilman was the rumored deal I believe. They both eat innings.

We could have had Bedard. It is very unlikely that we will get Blanton for 2 reasons. 1-Oakland is now viewing him as their new ace for this season at least. 2- Billy Beane can be the single most difficult GM to trade with. He only wants lots of prospects and your price is never equal to his. Whats worse is that I'm hearing that we will settle on Livan , only after Santana is out of the picture. THAT is sad if true.

I personally never saw Bedard in a Mets uniform. Not because he wouldn't fit in, but because Peter Angelos is a butt.Andy McPhail is just a puppet GM. Angelos is really the one pulling the strings in Baltimore.
I still think the Mets have the lead on Santana. The Skanks and Sawx would like to have him but neither are willing to give up what the Twinkies really want. Even if a trade is agreed to, Santana has to give the okay and an extension will most likely need to be discussed. In all honesty, if FMart is the only thing holding this up I say do it. He may turn out to be really great or he could turn into Jay Payton or Alex Escobar. FMart will be a distant memory if the Mets raise a 2008 World Championship banner in Citi Field...
Did anyone complain this much when we traded 5 prospects to the Twins for Frank Viola? He was only a year older than Santana at the time...

adam jones ?! u mean the birds weren't impressed with fernando martinez and his 2 home runs ?!
