Lohse Makes Me Laugh
With the Giants facing a do-or-die this weekend in Buffalo and the weather being awfully gloomy in Western New York, I really needed this chuckle. I needed a laugh and I got it thanks to Kyle Lohse.
I have learned not to believe everything I read but I saw that the Mets have made an offer to Lohse. That was pretty funny in itself, but what really got me in stitches was the fact that Lohse is reportedly asking for 10 million per season. HA. HA. HA. HA.
Oh that is really funny.
I understand that the baseball salary is completely out if control but this is borderline criminal.
Lohse, 29, is a career 63-74 guy with an ERA of 4.83 while pitching for Minnesota, Cincinnati and most recently Philadelphia.
Intimidating he is not and a New York Met I hope he will not be.
I would be surprised if Omar really signed this guy to a long-term deal. At best I could see offering him a one-year deal in the coupla-million-dollar range and hope he does well in Spring Training.
Maybe... But anything more than that just doesn’t make sense.
Give Mike Pelfrey or Phillip Humber a chance to develop in that fifth spot. We are clearly hanging on to them so let’s see what they can do with more of a taste of the big leagues. They both clearly have more upside than Lohse and will hopefully be a part of the team’s future. Lohse sees more like rental, albeit a bad one.
If we can’t make a trade for a worthwhile starter (Blanton) then it seems absurd to bring in another guy who isn’t any better than what we already have (Lohse). Especially at that insane price. I am usually a guy that thinks ‘it’s not my money so what do I care’, but in the wake of ticket prices rising again there is a lot of places that 10 million dollars should go before Lohse’s pocket.
The goal of this team is to win a World Series - now. Having Lohse in the rotation will not make that goal any closer to happening. He is decent at best but we have a lot of guys like that. Someone in the mix could perform equally as well if not better than what he would do, so save the money.
I know everyone wants a starter to help bolster this club, but we want one who can win and do so regularly. It is no surprise that the Mets are also rumored to be the only team left in the bidding for Lohse. No one else wants him.
If we can’t bring in a proven winner than lets develop one of our own.

If we get Lohse it will be the last straw. This has already been a disappointing off season as far as I'm concerned. I'm sick and tired of us acting like a small market team.

The only thing more aggravating then being a Mets fan is being a Giants fan too. When will there offence get in sync and start playing better.
Anyway Lohse would be an ok 4th or 5th to take a chance on, but anything more then 2 mil for him is crazy. Give Pelfrey a chance, I have a feeling he's gonna turn some heads this year.

10 Million is a bit much for a sub .500 pitcher...
I hope the market isn't THAT out of control!

Kevin Appier once got a 42 million dollar contract. I forget who gave it to him but I think the team eventually turned him into Mo Vaughn. Maybe the Mets should forget about an SP and just bring big Mo back. To do what? Well I'm not exactly sure, but I mean come on, it's Mo freakin' Vaughn. I bet he'd be great with Roberto Alomar on the right side of the infield.

All we can hope for is Omar is using all this interest in Lohse as a smoke screen for who he really wants - Blanton.
While the Mets' package for Sanatana and Bedard isn't as competitive as some others, the rumors are Omar could have the chips to be serious players in the Blanton sweepstakes which will become heavily publicized once the 2 big horses are off the table.
And the ever-clever Beane is already setting up a 3-way bidding war for Blanton with the Mets/Braves/Phils. It's a GM's dream come true to have 3 divisional opponents bidding against each other.
Every year the Braves lay low and then make a big splash. If those Atlanta bloggers are not blowing smoke, then we have to beleive the Braves have set their sights squarely on Blanton.
If we come up short, as expected, that brings us back to Lohse. And if Omar takes the Lohse plunge at that cost, this Met fan walks.

One thing I've learned being a huge sports fan is that the team you root for, even if it's a team in a big market like NY, can't always be good. Everything is cyclical in team sports...A team is great for 5 or 6 years, then it's bad for 5 or 6 years, and after doing some retooling, quality drafting, and good free agent signing, the team becomes competitive again. Examples can be cited in every team sport. Having said that, I think The Mets are at a point where they should just go with whatever starting pitching they have for the upcoming season. Let's give these young fellas a chance to sink or swim. It's better than what seems like the only 2 other alternatives: Trade away our top prospects for a #1 starter (a la Frank Viola and Brett Saberhagen, and neither of those 2 pitchers were exactly lights out as members of The Mets) or sign a mediocre free agent to an overinflated oontract.

It´s all Santa´s fault. Instead of getting that big Christmas gift we wanted it seems we´re gonna end up with a lump of coal in our stocking. Guess we haven´t been good little boys and girls this year.
