You Can't Have It Both Ways: You Want To Win Now, Or Wait 5 Years Until The Kids Are Ready?
I find it absolutely amusing each time I read some of the comments from our readers...
On one side you have the slow and steady crowd. They are the ones who want no part of trades for guys like Johan Santana or Jake Peavy. They also like to keep the Mets from spending all of their profits as well. The people in this crowd would turn 27 shades of blue before handing Alex Rodriguez $300 million dollars, or Albert Pujols $250 million dollars. Slow and steady... Carlos Gomez is going to be a star... Lastings Milledge is a stud... Slow and steady... Mike Pelfrey and Philip Humber will be the top pitchers in the game one day... Mets prospects are the best, this I know, because the Mets have told me so... We are Mets' management's favorite fans... No rush, we'll wait for how long it takes to win a World Series....
Now you have the other side of Mets fandom, the "Dark Side" if you will. They have a totally different mindset. "Screw Mike Pelfrey", they scream, "I want to win now!" When a guy like Johan Santana comes along you don't think, YOU DO! They have no problems moving four players for one player if they think that player is a difference maker. I want to win right now... Sign A-Rod and move Wright to first base... I want to win right now... Screw the (fill in the blank)...
You will even find these same battle lines drawn in the sand between our writers too. Which is totally okay with me, after all we are the Fair and Balanced Mets Network.
So where do you stand on the current Mets issues?
Do you just want to stand pat let the kids Pelfrey and Humber pitch the entire season no matter where we finish in the standings, no matter if their ERA's are over 5.00 again?
Or...
Screw that plan! Let's go after Dan Haren, Johan Santana, Jake Peavy, anybody! Damn whatever it costs, give them who ever they want!
Or, are you somewhere in between? It's amazing how willing Mets fans are to debate themselves so passionately with each side thinking the other is completely out of touch. That's the beauty of being a Mets fan. With Yankees fans it's different. They have no problem with throwing money and prospects at every problem. They are all in agreement. All they argue about is which stars the team should target.
With Mets fans, it's never that easy...
Where do I stand, definitely in the middle. I wanted no part of A-Rod, but I would easily give up Carlos Gomez, Aaron heilman and Mike Pelfrey for Johan Santana and his 5-year $100 million dollar price tag.

You are correct. I want the mets to keep their young studs. Im not saying that I wouldnt mind having a Johan or a Peavy or a Haren on the team but in the long run, I would love to see our young pitchers and out young outfield do their thing in mets uniforms. Look at Jeremy Bonderman, he was horrible in his first couple of years. Pelfrey and Humber might even be better than Bonderman. Bonderman is probably the Tigers ace, he was one of the reasons why they went to the world series in 2006. Maybe if we still had Kazmir, who knows what would have happened to the mets in the last couple of years.
Now there is a rumor going around that the Mets might try to sign Andruw Jones to take over Shawn Green's spot in left field. I dont believe this, but if it is true, I dont like it. Just give Lasting Milledge a shot will ya?!! He was awesome in the last couple of weeks and so was Green.
All in all, when it all comes down to, Im a met fan that just wants to see his favorite team move ahead. Im not saying they have to win the world series, just take your time and it will all fit together.

Call me Darkside. For some reason I'm a little hesitant this year. I want to keep Milledge, Gomez, Martinez. But other years give me that stud for prospects. They always ask alot from us in these trades. Reyes for Santana puhleeze, No way I make that trade. Trade some young talent but not all, don't overpay this time around.

In my opinion I wouldnt give away to many prospects. For some odd reason I like Pelfrey. I know he was far from a stellar pitcher this year in his first 3 starts , but he kinda grew on me.(Hell the first time I saw him pitch we got crushed by the Brewers and of corse I had to be sitting next to the only group of Brewers fans in Shea lol)Ok back to my opinion.. Id rather see them try to cut a deal with Gomez and Heilman to try and get Dan Haren. If he comes available. I think the price for Santana is way to high. Next week by this time should be very xciting for us Mets fans. LETS GO METS!!

i am on the "dark side" so you say. listen if the mets would have just went to the world series in 06 and atleast made the playoffs this year i would say dont trade our prospects but after 2 dissapointing years the coolapse the most latest 1 i say this season we gotta go 4 it all!!!

I'm not really sure where I'm at. Middle of the road maybe? I don't really care what management does so long as the Mets learn how to be 'THE METS' again: humble and playing with heart.

After what happened last season, I think every Met fan wants to win now.

We've given the Mets 21 years to "develop" their prospects. Let's win one already. The Mets have the money to sign whomever they want, they just won't. I'm tired of waiting "just another 5 years"
by the way, the 86 amazins were anything but humble...

I am more on your side of the fence. I feel though that winning right now does not always mean that much. If it means trading up your whole team every season (like other teams do) takes away the fun in it. It takes away the passion and it definately takes the heart out of the team.
The best analogy I can think of is when a body-builder takes steroids just to win. Sure even with the 'roids it still takes work and some effort but it takes the fun out of the competition. Enhancers are good to help boost a win. But, just skipping all the fight makes it much less worth it. (At least in my eyes.)
People can call me less of a Mets fan but I am a die hard through and through. I went to 41 games this season, although that does not make me MORE of a fan than the person that opts to watch it at home, I went with all of my heart!
In the end I don't think winning is EVERYTHING. It's a lot, but let's keep our hot prospects. I would LOVE to see Santana come. I also do not want to see another offseason go by with a small focus on pitching and left with a mediocre staff.
That's my bit.

the two ideas are not mutually exclusive.
you can win now by making smart deals that don't pillage your entire farm system.
the mets could get dan haren for a smaller package and hold onto 2 of their three young pitchers and outfielders.
once again you guys have to take things to extremes.

GO FOR BROKE!! We need to win now!
metsfan, you are such a whiner!!! If you dont like extremes go watch teletubbies or something. This site is THE EXTREME!!!!!!! Keep up the great job metsmerized!!

If Shea wasn't closing at the end of next season, I would say keep the prospects. But since Shea is closing, I say they lose some of their prospects for the likes of Haren or Santana. I don't want them to leave Shea the same way they entered it: as Lovable Losers.

Big moves do need to be made. Watching that entire collapse, live especially, was a lot. We need to come back big if the Mets want to redeem themselves.

LISTEN IF THE METS CAN GET SANTANA , I SAY LETS DO, MAKE IT HAPPEN OMAR. I WOULD NOT GIVE UP REYES OR GOMEZ THOUGH, WON'T HAPPEN. ARON MIKE N MAYBE ONE MORE PROSPECT, BU T THAT'S ABOUT IT. LISTEN, THE METS CAN'T RELY JUST ON ONE MAN TO GET THEM TO THE WORLD SERIES, IT'S NOT GONNA HAPPEN THAT WAY, THERE GONNA NEED TO LEARN HOW TO PLAY BETTER TOGETHER N MORE AS A TEAM BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT IT IS, A TEAM GAME, AS LONG AS THE METS BELIEVE N SHOW FAITH N ONE ANOTHER THEN THEY'LL BE JUST FINE. DON'T TALK ABOUT IT NO MORE LETS BE ABOUT IT.
ON THAT NOTE, LETS GO METS
PS BE SMART OMAR N WILLIE

In the end, its all a gamble. We could get Santana, and he could get injured, or just not pitch well...Or, we could stick with who we have, and they could have the season of their lives... I'd love for us to get some better pitching, but I don't want to give up stars like Reyes to get them.
A lot of teams have done better with far worse than the Mets have now! You just never know...

I am right down the middle on this. I want to be competitive every year, and feel we have a chance at it if we play well. I dont need to see a team of $100M players to feel that. Prospects are the key to any teams future, same as knowing when to trade them. From what i have seen and read I am hoping for the following...
1-Lmilz, Heilman, + Gotay/Prospect for Haren/Snell
2- LMilz, Ollie, Gotay, + Heilman for Santana/Bedard + unk Player[R hernandez?]
3-Humber + prospect for C. Cordero/Rauch/Rivera
4-worst cases:
a.Lmilz/Gomez for Blanton/Slowey
b.Lmilz/Gomez + Humber for Garza
c.Low prospect or 2 for Prior
d.2 Low level prospects for J. Contreras[yes, he had a down year + is not an ace, but will make a good #5 starter for this year and next]
d.low prospect for C. Lee[was stellar 2 years ago]
The key is trade SPECIFIC prospects. Guys like LMilz, Heilman, Gotay, and Humber are spare parts. Yes, i know people are obsessed with Lmilz, the guy can play, but I really see Gomez as the real deal. These 3 are losing theur place in the franchise, and since we have depth, now is the time. We wont let Gotay play 2nd, LMilz play CF, or let Heilman start.
Trading Ollie[who i love] for a #1 doesnt hurt bc we have Maine, Pedro, and Duque at 2,3,4.
Conversely, I have my own untouchable list. NO TRADING maine, f-mart, rustich, guerra, + mulvey...they have too much talent and we will hopefully be seeing them soon.
Try to retain Gomez + Pelfrey bc they have so much potential, and even while developing, they have tools they can use to be successful while learning [gomez-speed + D, Pelf-a + FB].
I think we can get a great SP, maybe even add another good one, and keep out KEY prospects.
This is the year to do it, bc we have a full staff of SP [next year, we have 2 on the books], and our prospects havent broken out yet, so every team wont be asking for them [like they do with LMilz], but they also havent flopped, they have good prospect status.
Something to keep an eye on.

Again, obviously speculation, and based on the rumors I have read...how many Met fans would be doing back flips with this chain of events...
1a-Trade LMilz, Ollie, Heilman, + Estrada to Baltimore for Bedard + R Hernandez
2-Trade Humber + AAA prospect for Cordero/Rauch
3-Trade 2 A/AA prospect for either Prior/Contreras.
4-Trade 1 A/AA for C. Lee, and leave open competition for #5, or start in AAA. Sign Colon to minor league deal and keep in-waiting. If he is doing good, slide Duque into the pen.
SP:Bedard,Pedro,Maine,El Duque
Bedard/Haren/Garza, Prior/Contreras
AA/AAA Depth-Colon/Lee, Pelfrey, Vargas, Bostick, + Mulvey-adding Rauch for BP and Hernandez to catch
Mets sign RF to platoon with Chavez for 1/2 season until Gomez is ready in june
If that doesnt work, we keep estrada and Ollie, and we trade LMilz, Heilman, Pelfrey for Haren or Lmilz, Gotay, + AA for Garza/Slowey.
either way, trading for a "big SP", RP, and back-end SP, and signing/trading for low risk/high reward depth is very feasible.
Hopefully Omar can swing a few things, and get creative, while protecting some of the farm.
Ps. prediction-Vargas[now healthy] and Bostick will quickly become our best AAA, and will be making our spot starts. Vargas lost 5-7 mph due to injury, and now is healthy. Bostick is tearing up the PCL and looked good in his last few AAA starts.

Well... I don't think there has to be a "dark side" or a "slow side". Honestly, it should be a little of both. Obviously there will always be players who are rookies, or just lacking in play time. In those respects we can see the light down the tunnel. Giving up a player who in two years from now will be playing for another team, doing extremely well, and then saying "why the f*&K did we ever let him go, isn't the best way to go... On the other hand, just relying on "only" those players isn't the way to go either. There is no reason we can't keep some budding players, and shoot for a player that can motivate and help the team now. That's what it's all about isn't it? As far as motivation, that is another story. It's going to be a chore to overcome the dissapointments of last season. Hopefully, management will do what they are supposed to do, and ensure that there is the commitment and camaradarie necessary to pull the team together for the new season.
