Opinion: Are Lastings Milledge And Carlos Gomez Gone?

All we hear are rumors and speculation around this time of the year. I love it!

I read something interesting this morning from Steve Popper on his blog Amazin Stories. He had some interesting things to say about his conference call with Omar Minaya yesterday, but what really caught my attention was this...

As far as right field, Minaya did admit that he's investigating the free-agent market, which might mean that he knows his young chips might be on the way out.

Omar was also quoted as saying... "If you're going to trade for pitching in this market - with the way pitching is right now - you're going to have to part with some premium guys. Our premium prospects are very well liked. We could be players in some of the pitching that might be traded. We're always talking to clubs, we talk on a daily basis. We'll get a deal done.''

You know what??? I'm glad Omar is going to be aggressive! :-)

I don't know how to feel about losing both Lastings Milledge and Carlos Gomez though. But at the same time if it means a veteran right fielder, and ace for the rotation or a solid catcher, I guess like Omar says, you gotta give up premium prospects.

What do you think? Does anybody else feel uneasy if we lost both Gomez and Milledge?

Comments

FINALLY!!! I am so glad that Omar is talking this way. Adequate outfielders (which they are at this point) are a dime a dozen in the bigs. Good quality pitching isn't. He has to move them.

Well...im with you on the last part. A bit uneasy on losing both.
Gomez seems like a star coming soon...

Bring on Kosuke Fukudome.

I'll go with that.

I feel real uneasy losing both. I rather lose a Milledege then a Gomez tho.

right on Tyler... Fukudome is the one to get. He has outstanding yearly and career OBP numbers.

Depends on who we get. We got Fernando waiting for LF, so the sting will not be so bad. If trading both gets us Santana or Oswalt or ne pure ace, Omar should pull it.

Whatever improves the team works for me! Even if it means Milledge and Gomez going out the door...although I feel like if the Mets can keep Gomez, Omar should do his best.

I don't feel uneasy about losing Milledge and/or Gomez. OFs are easy to come by and the '09 FA crop looks to be decent with Crawford, Dunn and Ibanez possibly being available. If trading Milledge and Gomez helps the rotation, I'm all for it.

While it's tough to lose young prospects in the organization, sometimes you have to give up to get, Nothing is ever a guarantee but the good thing with prospects is they're more of a gamble than a Vet or a Young Stud like Dan Haren.
Milledge may be the next Gary Sheffield, he also may be the next Mike Cameron. Fernando Martinez may be the next Carlos Lee, he also may be the next Preston Wilson so it's all a crapshoot, I mean we traded Rico Brogna as a prospect, he had a few good years with the Phillies but nothing that really would've made a difference over here. We also traded Kevin Mitchell, then he won the MVP and took the Giants to the World Series 2 years later. I mean how good would he have looked in an infield of HoJO, Hernandez, Backman, and Carter With Dykstra, Strawberry, and say Eric Davis out there.
Mets traded Mike Scott for a bag of balls in '84 and he turned around and killed the Mets most of the late 80's. But hey guys we also got John Maine out of Kris Benson, Mike Piazza out of Preston Wilson, Al Leiter out of AJ Burnett.
You guys get the picture
While prospects are fun to watch develop (Jose Reyes) others kill you (Ryan Thompson, Generation K)

Hey even our crosstown buddies have done some wrong things.....Everyone ever hear of a guy named Jay Buhner or Mike Lowell?

Well said, nice throwback references.
Everything that the Mets can do is a 50/50 crapshoot. Did we know Bell would be the 8th inning guy we needed last year, or that Bannister was the 5th starter we were missing? If we did, did we know they would be that successful. Most of us were happy we were retooling the system with some young decent arms.
This offseason, as much as we need a trade, I think we need to take a calculated risk. You dont trade the farm for a 1 yr rental, thats almost as dumb as trading Reyes. But, the Mets are HOPEFULLY looking at moving some spare parts, like:
-1 of Gomez or Milledge, personally, I think Gomez has more to offer, but i wont be heart broken.
-Heilman + Gotay-lost their place in the organization, and his value is as a starter or as a trade
-Maybe 1 of Humber or Pelfrey-both have unseen potential, with Pelf being the power pitcher we need, and Humber being the safer bet
-Bostick, Vargas, + Burgos-depth added via trade last year, have no definitive direction in the system. Vargas is a gritty pitcher, when recovered from inj could contribute at #5 or RP. Bostick has shown he can have success as a pro in the minors, we may see some of him next year. Burgos ="lil Ollie"...he's an enigma, possibly a closer in the wings. Get well soon!
-Carp, Stewart, A-Hern, Collazo-not really prospects, but are usefull throw-ins to get a deal done.
-Guerra, F-Mart, Kunz, Rustich, + Mulvey-they are the true untouchables of the organization. They all have the raw abilities that project high, and at their worst, will still be Ml talent. They should be left out of any and all deals

We are going to lose some premium prospects regardless. The key is getting a deal done with minimal damage. We, contrary to belief are in the drivers seat this year. If we were anywhere but NY, a rotation of Pedro, Maine, OP, El duque, w/1 young SP is a + rotation. Next year we lose 1-3 SP [via FA or trade], so the deal needs to be done now, otherwise we will be at their mercy. Picking up a 2nd tier SP [garza, slowey, baker, gorzellany, snell, blanton, etc...] with hope of development is probably the best avenue to go right now, and we can save out AAA to be where, gulp, the Yanks are right now with Joba, Kennedy, Hughes, etc... They have a really good problem to have, and thats cheap-talented SP locked for for 5+ years. That sounds good to me, and we have a few guys to do it with, we just have to use them + groom them the right way.
Lets GO METS!!!

please dont trade them lastings milkledge was a beast the 2nd half of the year and Gomez had some beautiful catches i think we need them both

I CAN RELATE TO HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT MAYBE TREADING CARLOS GOMEZ, I DON'T THINK OMAR SHOULD. MILLEDGE WE CAN LET GO AND TREAD IF ANYTHING, NOT SAYING I DON'T LIKE MILLEDGE BUT, HE'S THE GUY I WOULD PUT ON THE TOP OF THE LIST IF I WAS GOING TO TREAD FOR ANYBODY. AS FAR AS PITCHING, OMAR SHOULD WITH OUT QUESTION GO AND TREAD FOR SANTANA AND HARAN, THAT'S A KNOW BRAINIER. AS FOR RIGHT FIELD, OMAR AND WILLIE SHOULD THINK ABOUT GETTING ANDRE, THE KID FROM THE DODGERS, I THINK THAT WOULD A VERY GOOD PICK UP, JUST TAKE A LOOK AT HIS NUMBERS. LISTEN, IT'S LIIKE THIS, OMAR AND WILLIE, HAVE TO GO AND MAKE THE RIGHT MOVES THIS TIME AROUND AND MAKE GOOD THING'S HAPPEN FOR 2008, LIKE A WORLD SERIES. SO THAT MEANS, TREADING FOR THE RIGHT PEOPLE IS A MUST.

HAVE A BLESSED SEASON NEW YORK METS

GOD IS LOVE

dont let go of both just 1 i say cause i wanna be good not only this year but also in the future i say keep milledge
