The Red Sox Win and the A- Rod Circus Begins
What an interesting past 24 hours it has been in the world of Major League Baseball! One minute the Red Sox are popping corks all over Coors Field and the next Alex Rodriguez makes “news” by opting out of his Rangers/Yankees deal.
In hindsight, looking back it’s hard NOT to pick the Red Sox as the eventual World Champs. Granted, because I am a Mets fan I would have just KNOWN there would have been a repeat of 1986 had they clashed again. I suppose you have to give the Sox their due, they won because they were the best and not because they were a team of “destiny” like the Rockies surely would have been pegged as. Not taking anything from the Rockies but there was no way they were getting out of this thing as champs. Not when your stadium is the baseball equivalent to Cape Canaveral. Either way, congrats to the Red Sox…be glad Omar signed Mota because otherwise things might have been different.
On to the big topic…Alex Rodriguez the free agent. We all know it wasn’t going to be a surprise when he opted out. Alex Rodriguez may be many things but stupid is not one of them. Arrogance, cheating, disrespect for the game and lack of discretion aside, he knows how the business side of the game works. That’s why he has the devil…er..I mean Scott Boras as an agent. Part of me just salivates at the thought of monster homeruns and ridiculous amounts of RBIs he would pile up at Shea/Citi Field. Even David Wright…the man himself gladly said he’d give up third base for A- Rod. I think that’s just David’s’ team first attitude shining through though. Then I think of the infield logjam it would create, the money that could be spent on solidifying the bullpen, money for someone like Johan Santana later and Cynthia Rodriguez wearing offensive t-shirts to ballgames.
All things considered, we have already seen how A-Rod has handled New York. He may be a lifelong Mets fan, but so am I…it doesn’t mean it would be good for me to be on the field. Unless Omar sees something different, I’d rather him head to Boston or California. I just want to see a championship at Shea this year.

thank you for pointing to people the realization that A-rod does NOT fit in any way on the Mets and their plans for the future. He has never won a championship in his career for a reason!
just a note....Cynthia Rodriguez wore a FCUK NYC shirt to a yankees game earlier this year. THat is not offensive. FCUK stands for French Connectionand is a clothing company from England. Just like DKNY (donna king new york) the designer brand has a store in New York City thus FCUK NYC.

i would love to get a-rod, excellent player that would do good on the smaller ny stage, trade reyes for santana, and get one of those pitchers from oakland that was mention on here before, putting el duque in the pen the team is looking better already all we need is a first baseman and oh yea gomez can be our leadoff.

Tim,
I would love that too. But there are multiple probelms here. A-rod is no longer a SS due to his age(lost a step), added weight he's put on to play 3B, and the fact that he has stated he doesnt want to move back to SS, so your proposition wouldn't work to begin with.
Also, would you want to trade a 24 year old everyday playing SS for a pitcher who will command a 100+ million dollar deal, then fill the SS void with a 200+ million dollar player?? Im pretty sure even the Yankees couldnt pull that off.
Lets not forget that Fred Wilpon does not want to increase the luxury tax... Translation- no increased payroll!

Sorry for posting this here but I dunno where else to post this. I should also note that while I have a love affair with the sport of baseball, and the Mets, in some ways I am just a typical girl. :P In this particular case, when it comes to trades. I know where we need help, but knowing who can offer that help is a different story. On that note, I just read an article that came out today about those who have officially filed for Free Agency and this paragraph stood out to me:
Other notables getting a quick jump on the filing period were a pair of relievers with 625 saves between them (Detroit's Todd Jones and the Cardinals' Troy Percival) and Kerry Wood, the one-time Cubs fireballer who has battled injuries for four years but still is only 30 years old. Milwaukee stopper Francisco Cordero also filed after nailing down a career-high 44 saves.
Do you guys think any of those relievers would be a good match for the Mets? Also, if the answer is yes, what are the chances (in your opinion) that we can actually get them?

Well there is a lot of talk about A-Rod on here. I'm my opinion, aside from how A-Rod is a greedy jerk, it would not be wise for the Mets to put so much money into one single player (a position player at that) when pitching pitching pitching is what the focus needs to be this off season. We have a few promising young position players that have proven themselves over the past couple years. Of course there is concern there, but when is there not? Wasting away a bajillion dollars on one man just to gain one hot bat would not be wise at all. Also trade Reyes? WHAT!!?? I love the off season, everybody plays GM for a few months!!!!!!!!!!

Todd Jones is going to be 40 years old and hasn't had too good of years the past two seasons. The last two season with the Tigers, he had 75 saves in 125.3 innings pitched. In those 125.3 innings pitched, he has given up 154 hits with a ERA of 4.10. All as a closer. His number aren't too good. I think Troy Percival a lot. He will be 37 years old next year. Last year he had a great season. He pitch 40 innings, went 3-0, with a ERA of 1.20. He only gave up 24 hits in those 40 innings with only 3 HR's. Now, the best of them all, Francisco Cordero. Cordero had an outstanding year in '07. Francisco posted 44 saves in 63.3 innings with with a ERA of 2.98 and 86 K's. He would be a great addition to the bullpen.

A-Rod wasn't all that bad in his first postseason apperence with the Yankees, and the other apperences before that. From '97-'04, A-Rod had a AVG. of .341, 4 HR's and 16 RBI's in 101 plate apperences. So, he hasn't been a career terrible postseason batter. Also, everybody is saying that it is A-Rod's fault that the Yankees didn't even make it past the first round of the playoffs. If it wasn't for A-Rod, the Yankees would even have been sniffing 2nd place.

Even if The Mets pursued A-Rod, and I hope to god that they don't, I don't see any way he could spend another 5+ years in NYC based on his divorce from The Yankees. He'd be crucified by the media, Yankees beat writers, and disgusted Yankees fans. He'd probably need to wear a wig and a kevlar vest anytime he walked around in public. If there's anyone who would greatly benefit from a fresh start in a new city where no one yet knows what a tool he is, it's A-Rod. But then again, the guy is such a selfish, pampered whore that he'd probably follow the highest bid to a pro league in Afghanistan if it was offered.

Thanks for the blog, finally someone who is talking about how Arod should not be a Met! He fit in great with the Yankees because they are overpaid babies. He should never be a Met...never ever! Let me say that again, AROD SHOULD NEVER BE A MET!!
Wilpons, Omar...please do not go after him!! What does it say about us if we take a player that the desparate Yankees don't even want??
Even if he were to get a huge contract with the Mets, we all know he won't finish it out. His puppet master will put some opt-out clause in there too and he will opt out for more money...you can bet on it!
All he cares about is the money. I am not a Yankee fan at all but I found it to be an a**hole move to mention Posada, Rivera and Pettite as his reasons for leaving.
What we need now, more than ever, is a unifying feeling on the Mets! Arod is a polarizing player who was once dubbed by his teamates as "the chill" because he makes hot teams cold. Do we really want to screw up our infield for an overpaid baby who doesn't care about the team he plays on?? Mets fans, I know this season hurt but c'mon lets be reasonable! A-rod doesn't care about the Mets and his BS about being a "life-long Mets fan" was just a bargaining chip. He just cares about the money.
Think about it...if Al Qaeda were a baseball team and Osama Bin Laden offered him $1 billion to "play", he would be on the next flight out of the states with a burning American flag in his hand!

Great article... Yeah, watched the "A-Rod hoopla with much amusement. Needless to say, I could think of a lot better ways to spend a gazillion dollars than on A-Rod for sure. I'm thinking pitchers, and btw, Jose Reyes is still the most exciting man in baseball. I don't recall A-Rod having that title...(smile)
