Mets' Hill Too Steep To Climb As 6-Run 9th Is Just Short
While other Mets fans might take a positive approach to Tuesday night's 10-9 loss to the Washington Nationals, I find no joy in Flushing with a precious five games to play.
This game was an embarrassment, a shambles. Yes, we almost pulled it off in the ninth, but almost never counted and never will. For another arduous game of nearly three-and-a-half hours, the usually light-hitting Nats impersonated a playoff-bound team.
Tom Glavine was a mess, getting hitting early and often. I mean these Nats salivate at the plate when they see our pitching. Try 48 runs in the last five games. That's insane. Austin Kearns clocked a three-homer in the first, his second three-run tater in as many days, and you knew it was going to be another long night.
It was 4-0 by the time the Mets came to bat and Jose Reyes tried to tie it with one swing. You know Willie Randolph wasn't pleased. How about spraying the ball to the outfield, then stealing a base. A solo shot isn't cutting it.
Our pitching is just so bad. We can't win games by scoring 10 or more runs. We have to be held accountable for our pitching.
Now, we're relying on Phillip Humber to right the ship in his major league debut. That's not only insane, it's unfair. Right now, we don't deserve to be NL East champs. I don't want to back in, but it seems that's what we're trying to do.
Seventy losses is way too many for this team. We played eight innings of lacklustre baseball, then tried to turn it on in the ninth. Men, this is not acceptable baseball. You show up for work with no backbone, no intensity, no desire. Utterly spineless.
David Wright, we could have used you earlier in the game. Instead, two double plays. Carlos Delgado, you struck out three times Tuesday night. We could have used a clutch single from you after Moises Alou doubled to close the deficit to 10-9.
Okay, turn the page. Are we getting swept Wednesday night by the Nats in our park? Or, are we going to do something about it? Two game lead, five to go. We've earned nothing yet, except the ridicule of the fans.

Two teams in recent history have stumbled into post season. The 2000 Yankees ended the season losing 12 of their last 16 and the Cards last year ending losing 10 of their last 14. Both of those teams went on to win the World Series. I'm not saying the 2007 Mets will do the same but if and when you get to post season, its a clean slate.

It appears to me that this team at times just doesn't give a crap anymore...Yes, a comeback in the 9th was great, but why should a team with the offensive weapons we have, have to try and score 7 runs in the last inning to save our poor pitching. I hope Humber steps up and just does what he can to keep us in the game.

Reyes is killing us..his defensive lapses and his refusal to bunt for a single or take a walk.

The fact that OUR Mets are making us all become Braves fans in this stretch makes me sick.
Something is wrong with Reyes. Yes, he had 2 HRs but that mistake (laziness) on the field cost us the game. Also, when he almost got picked off at first...was Willie staring down Reyes or Rickey Henderson?
Posted by: david | September 26, 2007 10:16 AM
Don't start anything new against Henderson david! It's bad enough the pree does that. Do you really believe that Wille Randolph was staring at Henderson? Of course you dont, so dont say it.

i definitely do. look at hendersons history. this guy is ME ME ME all the way. he is a great addition in spring training but who knows what he is feeding to reyes.
henderson is also a hire of minaya, not willie. have you read anything that has been going on lately? wake up paul!!!

ha ha ha, the losers talk is really starting to pile up at this site. The realization of your demise is finally setting in. You wish you had a farm system like the Yankees who have major league ready superstars not that bogus crap you call pelfry, humer, milledge! They suck!! Look at our Melky Cabrera, Philip Hughes, Ian Kennedy and Joba Cahmaberlain!! You guys totally blow, your major league team is full of choke artists and your minor leagues is full of shit!
Posted by: MetsSuck | September 26, 2007 10:59 AM
One more thing, the Yankees are where they are because when they had to play the bad teams they beat them. They didnt roll over and choke against the worst teams in your league like the Mets did!!!!

did someone win a ring in september?
Posted by: david | September 26, 2007 11:01 AM
OK (no offense to Christian-mets fan, whom I love and respect and love reading his views!), but if I hear one more person talk about how history does not necessarily dictate performance in the postseason, I will scream! (hear me? I'm doing it now LOL) The Cards, the 2000 Yankees, the Red Sox in the 2004 postseason are really just exceptions to the rule I feel, and people think this happens all the time. True in 2002 the Oakland As went on an unprecedented streak and still lost in the playoffs, so being the best or dominating or whatever does not necessarily translate into championship.
People seem to forget we are Mets fans. Nothing EVER comes easy to us. If we wanted it easy, we'd all be Yanks fans. (yeesh) I digress. The Mets have been playing uninspiring and "boring" baseball (according to Mr ZZZ at the Plate himself, Carlos Delgado) all season. We all know this. I am one of those fans who likes to stick it out till the end, since I was there in 2000 when the Mets mounted a 7 run deficit in the 8th inning, tied it up and Piazza hit a 3-run dinger to ensure the game would turn out the way we expected. This season has been so painful. For a team in first place, on a 90-game pace, it's been ugly.
Now that said...I have to go ahead and disagree with the original posting that this was too little, too late :-). The 9th inning was some of the most exciting, clutch and inspired baseball this team has had. True the pitching hasn't been cutting it lately (our stalwarts Glavine and Duque were stinking it up regularly and Maine has been blah while Oh Pea has his ups-and-downs but he's still our ace), esp the BP. but after the 9th inning, I felt...this team could truly pull off a postseason to remember. I was on board after that.

But it WAS too little, too late. You can talk about the heart they showed coming back in the 9th, but where was this heart in the previous 8 innings or the game before? Bottom line is a loss is still a loss, no matter if it's 10-3 or 10-9. 2 up, 5 to go is not the time for moral victories. Just win.

so being the best or dominating or whatever does not necessarily translate into championship.
---------------------------
That is exactly the point I have been trying to make. In fact as I have said countless times over the last two weeks is the fact that since the wild card and extra playoff round was added in 1995 the teams that clinch in the final week of the season have had an unbelievable track record of post season success. The teams that play important games in the final week of the season have been the most successful playoff teams whether the team clinched their playoff spot in the final week by stumbling into the playoffs or getting hot in the final week and riding it through the post season. The fact is that teams that have great seasons and wrap up a playoff spot by 7 or more games in the standings do not fair well in post season.

Unfortunately tonight will probably be like the last two weeks. You know they won't let Humber go too deep into the game. Which means our bullpen will AGAIN be called into action. NOT A GOOD THING!!! Has anyone noticed that no one in our bullpen can retire a team 1, 2, 3? And forget about changing pitchers in the middle of an inning. No one ever gets the last out without giving up a run(s). It's disgraceful and embarrassing.
Ever wonder if the offense gets mad? I think I have it figured out why the team is so blah - the offense knows however many runs they score, they won't last long. Pretty sad, huh? I did see fire last night in the 9th - but that was because if they took the lead the game was over - no chance for the bullpen to blow it!
Maybe Randolph or Peterson needs to come out to calm the pitchers down when they are in trouble instead of just standing there. I think they both need to go if we don't make it. One other point, since Henderson became the first base coach, supposedly to help Reyes, he's become lax and less intense. Best base stealer or not, he's not a good coach!!!
BUT WE ARE STILL IN FIRST PLACE - LETS GO METS!!!!!!

One other point - Why are there so many Yankee fans on this site? Maybe because they don't have a cool site like this? Oh and in case they didn't know - we really don't care what they have to say!!! They weren't talking so big back in July - SO GO AWAY!!!
Posted by: Virginia | September 26, 2007 12:26 PM
but Fred, to play Mets advocate over here ;-), i know there is no room for moral victories at this time when every win or loss is crucial. But that is the MO of this team. Let others do the work for you. Seriously! When the team was on its June swoon, the only reason they managed to stay in first is b/c they pulled a couple out of their a$$ and the Phils and Braves matched them, suck for suck. Now they have to rely on the BRAVES to TCOB they couldn't do earlier this month or late in August.
No room for moral victories thats true, but I did feel encouraged. More encouraged than this whole season. Sue me. :-)
Posted by: Coop | September 26, 2007 12:47 PM
SUE ME?!?!?! this is getting out of hand. no need to be so defensive
Posted by: david | September 26, 2007 12:49 PM
Coop, I'm all for trying to take something positive from a loss, like Reyes seemingly finding his stroke again or Alou just absolutely raking the ball, but 4 DPs and some pretty horrible pitching leaves a bad taste in my mouth. If this was the beginning of the month instead of game 157, I might be able to look on the bright side :)
Posted by: Fred | September 26, 2007 01:04 PM
and on top of all that our fans were doing the tomahawk chop!!!! clap for the braves...be happy the phillies lost but NEVER EVER CHOP!!!!
Posted by: david | September 26, 2007 01:09 PM
David, RELAX. Hasn't anyone ever said that to you in real life? You know, so I did that, sue me ;-) - hence the smiley afterwards.
Read my blog sometime, I am the least defensive person in the world :-)
Fred, I hear ya, I really do. I was saying in July that the games they were losing to Nats and the Marlins in August were going to come back to haunt them. How true, how true! But the way they've played recently, win or lose, I didn't feel confident going to postseason.
Posted by: Coop | September 26, 2007 01:15 PM
i was only joking.......you are the serious one......just promise me you wont chop....never chop
Posted by: david | September 26, 2007 01:25 PM
David, I didn't chop but I definitely needed a shower after saying that the braves needed to add another few insurance runs LOL
Posted by: Coop | September 26, 2007 01:44 PM
david wright 4 mvp!!...so he hit into 2 double plays it'z just dat zimmerman dude is good...dat ball should have been a double plus david has a 11 game hitting streak....and he'z cute..wat more do u expect from da guy??...WE R STILL IN FIRST PLACE!!
