I Have Become Un-Comfortably Numb
I'm not ready to jump off a ledge just yet, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little bit scared right now.
At a time when the Mets should be playing their best baseball, we have instead been witness to shoddy defense, horrendous relief pitching, and a lackluster approach at the plate. The Mets are reeling.
Jose Reyes has become a liability in September, Carlos Delgado is still a no-show after a dismal season at the plate, and nobody has stepped up on offense when it comes to leadership. Nobody.
Willie Randolph continues to say "it's no big deal", "I'm not worried", "we'll be fine", "I'm not angry", should I continue with his keen observations?
It is a big deal... I am worried... I'm not so sure that we'll be fine... And I am angry!
The Mets' lead in the division has now fallen to 2 1/2 games. The odds that they will win the division have fallen dramatically in Las Vegas, despite the high hopes of the fans and the passive attitudes of the players.
The Mets are taking everything for granted.
They have decided to give Pedro Martinez five days rest in between starts, despite the fact that Pedro was more than willing to go on four days like his other teammates in the rotation.
Willie Randolph keeps saying that El Duque is fine, but last night in the dugout, Hernandez was limping around and now sporting a boot on his foot. El Duque said he is not close to being ready to pitch after last nights game.
That adds up to at least four more starts from Brian Lawrence and Mike Pelfrey in the final 13 games with the Phillies breathing down their necks. How does that float your boat?
The greatest thrill that the Marlins and Nationals can squeeze out of their dismal seasons, would be to derail the Mets' playoff run. Each team's managers have openly talked about it and used it to rally their teams one final time before closing out the 2007 season. They are playing for pride, pulling out all the stops, and would consider it a badge of honor to sink the Mets.
Despite an inconsistent starting rotation and an awful bullpen, the Phillies are going for broke. Unlike the Mets who have nobody willing to step up and lead, the Phillies' Jimmy Rollins, Aaron Rowand, Ryan Howard and Chase Utley have all been vocal in the clubhouse and in the press about their next 12 games. "If we need to score 10 runs per game to overcome our poor pitching then that's what we'll do." They also get their young phenom Cole Hamels back in their rotation tonight after missing a month of action.
Are you wondering what the Mets have to say about their latest crisis?
Here is what Paul Lo Duca said last night after the game.
"We get paid a lot of money and we're not playing the game the right way. We're lackadaisical on defense. We swung the bats a little better tonight, but it just seems like we're not really playing to win. It needs to turn around quickly or we're going to be going home."
Going home?? Did I hear that correctly?
The usually upbeat and positive David Wright added this...
"We keep shooting ourselves in the foot. The intensity is there. The will to win is there. I just don't think the execution is there."
The execution is not there? With only two weeks left to the season??
So there you have it. The two most vocal players on the team sounding like they are jumping off of a sinking ship. Not exactly the kind of inspiring words I was hoping to hear after another Mets meltdown.

The mets are just killin me. It's hard to watch. The mets are completely falling apart at the worst possible time. Someone needs to be a real leader in that clubhouse and get the team on track!!

I'm wondering if Reyes is taking his cue from the first base coach. Rickey was a great base stealer but in terms of hustle and being aware, he was LOST. Is this really the kind of mentor Reyes needs right now?
I don't have a problem with Pelfrey starting, at least he has some upside. Lawrence offers absolutely NOTHING and why he started last night in Maine's regular spot, I have no idea.

As if our team falling on their faces isn't bad enough, we have to sit back and watch Yankee highlights and hear how they turned their season around.
Can anyone tell me what Willie was thinking about when he brought Mota into the game on Sunday? At the All-Star break, did Minaya think his less-than-average bullpen would figure it out? He should have asked the fans!!!!

You Gotta Believe....but the Mets are making it very tough. I do not understand why Lawrence got the start last night. I heard that Willie's reasoning was that yesterday was the day in Lawrence's schedule that he would normally pitch. That is horrible reasoning in my book. We needed a win to start turning this around and we put in a spot starter? Teams like the Padres have been starting their pitchers on 3 days rest and we go with a spot starter? Where is the emotion from our manager? Everything is NOT ok. Our team is starting to take on Willie's persona. I have never been a Willie Hater but these past few games are starting to make me wonder...ALOT. All we can do as fans is not give up hope. Our team has great talent but I am sad to say that they are not being managed correctly right now.

Hey guys, this is what I wrote on Shea Nation regarding this brouhaha - it stands here. Also to answer Dave's question, it is ridiculous reasoning. Unless someone is holding a gun to willie's head, a knife to back and is holding his daughter for ransom to start Lawrence - NO WAY HUMBER SHOULDN'T GET THE START.
With Lawrence on the mound...I had to say I saw him pitch in Milwaukee and although I threatened to drink Miller Park dry, i didn't have to, he did OK. Not great, not bad, just OK. He did enough. That said, why on god's green earth wasn't Humber out there? At least if someone is going to blow a game wide open, we can say, OH well it was his first start. But suffice to say I think he gives us a better chance than white flag lawrence.
Now as far as I see, DW has been very vocal about the losses here. He publicly said we got embarrassed out there. Well I have to disagree. Yes they were embarassed, but the only team embarrassing them was THEMSELVES. what was it like 95 errors in two games (which 90 were committed on Sunday). ENOUGH.
Face facts - they haven't played like a first place team since June and we were lucky. Now when the games count, its like - we're not executing? Dude, do us all a favor and just gracefully bow out of the competition if that's your theory. No need to waste our time, energy and money in the postseason, esp if you are cashing it in now.
If you can, stop by my blog and read my posting back in June on BP's Posse. Pretty much says it all. Later ~ Coop

There's only two people to blame and that is Willie and Omar Minaya. Willie for not managing the team corectly and Minaya for not keeping the same bull-pen from last year. Can someone explain why did Showen-looser getting sign?..Why is Mota getting more playing time? why why why. You cant be that dumb not to understand the numbers. Willie stop following your intuition. It proofs that your wrong. Follow the numbers, after all baseball is a game of numbers

How about not scoring anymore runs off of the Washington bullpen? Who's to blame for that--Willie or Omar?

Steve, your run comment defintely is an issue as well. But 13 runs to win a game is alot...can be done, but its alot. The players definitely need to be held accountable but management does as well.

I have been Willie supporter throughout his tenor but even my patience with him is starting to run thin. Now I totally understand why people are all over Willie but how on earth can anyone blame Omar.
I'm sorry people but the bullpen moves he made last off season were the right moves. Darren Oliver had his 2nd best year of his career last season by no means could anyone expect him to repeat that. As for Bradford its common knowledge that middle relievers have a 2-3 year success rate. Anyone who understands the business side of the game and the many many years of stats that back it up, you never never ever give a three year deal to a righty middle man. Bradford's BAA is over .300 this year. Last year every move Omar made turned out great this year most of his moves backfired, thats life thats baseball. You also can not blame him for not dealing two pitching prospects and one of our three young OF'ers for Cordero. That is way to high a price to pay.
As for the deals that sent Owens, Lindstrom, Bell, Ring, and Bannister for Ben Johnson, Vargas, Bostick, Burgos, just read each of their scouting reports and honestly tell me you wouldn't have made those deals.

I would have to agree to blame Willie over Omar. After all our past 2 GMs werent anything to miss. I would have to say that if it wasnt for Omar we wouldnt have Beltran, we wouldnt have Pedro, there is a good chance we wouldnt be in the position to be pissed off that our team is 2 and 1/2 games up in first place. Willie is the one who is the leader of this team and its time for him to start leading. I will take Omar any day of the week over Steve Phillips or Jim Duquette.

Omar is the best GM we have had since Frank Cashen and Joe McIvaine

Paulie tells it like it is- I wish Willie didn't BS in his interviews, saying things like "Well, they're playing the best they can." WAKE UP WILLIE- 10 errors in 2 games is not playing the best they can when they've been good defensively all year! I know exactly what the Mets need right now is to be chewed out by their manager to get them going but willie would never do that to the veterans! grrr...im just so frustrated with his nonsense. Bring back Bobby Valentine! I like to see a manager show some emotion!
