Game Recap:: Phillies 11 - Mets 10
Gary Cohen couldn't have said it any better when he called today's loss the most devastating loss of the season for the Mets.
The Mets suffered a crushing blow at the hands of the Philadelphia Phillies who came back to win 11-10 on a walk-off single by Chase Utley off of Billy Wagner.
The loss as chopped the Mets lead in first place to only two games as they get set to open a series in Atlanta tomorrow against the Braves.
The Philadelphia Phillies are riding high as they slapped the Mets around throughout the entire four-game series and backed up their early season claims that they were the team to beat.
Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley, Ryan Howard and Pat Burrell absolutely crushed Mets pitchers and had their way in almost every critical spot in the game.
The Mets did come back twice in the game, but at no time today or during the series were they ever able to deliver the lethal blow.
The Mets bullpen was rocked to it's core and now even it's most dependable pitcher, Billy Wagner has succumbed to the implosion of what once was one of the top bullpens in the game. Since the All Star break the Mets bullpen has fallen to the bottom of the pile in the National League, with no hope in sight.
Omar Minaya who did not want to pay the price for reliever Chad Cordero at the trade deadline, must now sit on his hands as he is helpless to find any help whatsoever on waivers.
The Mets were counting on huge contributions from Joe Smith and Ambiorix Burgos, but both pitchers are on the DL and at least one, if not both, will be shut down for the season.
Jose Reyes had a terrible series and many of the Mets hitters, save David Wright, failed to come through when the team counted on them.
The team is like a sinking ship with no direction, and now they must face their number one nemesis in the Atlanta Braves.
Rather than bore you with all of the ugly details, I'd like to hear your comments and your concerns on the beleaguered bullpen, the inability to put the game away, and lack of a killer instinct.
There will be no gameball for this recap, just a dozen unaswered questions that left me scratching my head, and chugging down Alka Seltzer cocktails.

Comments
Forget the season, I can't remember a more devasting regular season loss in the history of the franchise. This was a game they HAD to win. Period.
I just want to know why Willie felt the need to pitch his closer, who a week ago complained of a dead arm, for 2 innings? His arm is dead but Willie expected him to get 6 outs? Are you kidding me?
Most of the time I brush aside the posts that scream "OMG WILLIE IS TEH WORST EVAR!!!1" but I just can't wrap my head around having Wagner in the 8th, not to mention not at least having someone warm up in the 9th when the game was tied. This team is falling fast and I don't think they have the right person in charge to stop it. I'm just totally crushed right now.

great recap joe...
i dont understand why wagner was in there for the 8th closers, and set up men for that matter, are strictly one inning guys and you could tell he was winded after about 40 pitches.
the mets just got outplayed and now must really do a gut check and straighten there mess up by themselves!
Posted by: Todd Shanley | August 30, 2007 05:45 PM
i've never been one of those get down on your team guy when they lose..but right now i can't stand the mets..willie randolph is just a terrible manager.he can't motivate his players to get off their highly over payed ass'es and produce
...he's just like his mentor torre.
now with all that said..we're still in first place..it could be worse. as mets fan's we're used to heart break. we're not used to being expected to win. we have to shake this loss off like we have so many times before and go out there and take two of three from the braves.

Wow, what a disaster. Billy Wagner might be suffering from a dead arm, but Willie Randolph is suffering from a dead brain. Wagner's era has gone up over a point in his last 3 or 4 outings. And while complaining of a dead arm, he's put into the game to pitch 2 innings. Nicely done, Willie! One of the differences between a great time and a team like The Mets is having a lights out closer. Do you think Yankees fans dread seeing Mariano Rivera enter a close, must-win game? No. Do Red Sox fans see Jonathan Papalbaum enter a tight game and say to themselves "Nooooo!!!!" I don't think so. And by the way, as much as I love Jose Reyes, he's definitely the third best shortstop in the NL right now behind Hanley Ramirez and Jimmy Rollins. Rollins definitely made his superiority to Reyes an open and shut case in this 4 game sweep. And one hell of a job by Paul LoDuca allowing THREE stolen bases in the ninth inning.
Posted by: Drew | August 30, 2007 06:04 PM
This was hard to watch. Jimmy Rollins is the best shortstop in the NL, Pat Burrell is easily the Mets fans worst nightmare.
We didnt even face their best pitcher Cole Hhamels!!
I would trade our infield for the Phillies infield anyday!

This is willies fault.

I'm glad I missed the game today!!!!!! Sorry you guys had to see that !!!!! Unfuckinreal !!!!!
Posted by: Mike | August 30, 2007 06:33 PM
Yes I have been saying willie has sucked all year but in his defense, who else can you put in the 8th after your starter was out in the fourth inning after you played extra innings the day before?
on the bright side, maybe this will give them a kick in the ass so they can start playing with some urgency
Posted by: NYsportsGUY | August 30, 2007 06:47 PM
i missed the game today but i'm not suprised when you go bad these things happen i was so angry last nite i would have blown a gasket today they all deserve the blame for these last 4 games by the way i'm not using capital letters till the mets win

Guys...don't worry ok?
We're in First, not Philly....do u really think the cheesysteaks are not gonna lose anymore? LOL..comon guys....we're still 2 up after getting swept! As bad as it seems..it's not....we're in first, WE ARE! NOT THEM!
When that changes, then worry...till then......
Posted by: Pete | August 30, 2007 06:51 PM
Willie has made many mistakes this year, but none more critical than today. His handling of the bullpen is awful and his lack of fire or emotion is dragging the team down. We are in serious trouble with no help on the way. Omar should have bit the bullet and traded for Jon Rauch and Chad Cordero-now we will limp through September hoping to get a wild card berth. And why the hell is Kevin Berkhardt interviewing Jimmy Rollins on SNY?????? Is this the Mets station or what? oh wait-after this series, it turned into the Phillies station.
See yas next year because we have big problems this year and Pedro is not going to save us.
Posted by: angst24 | August 30, 2007 06:54 PM
It hurt. The Mets clearly are imploding. Let's just hope the Phillies cool down.
The loss to the Cards' in Game 7 of the NLCS was way more devastating than this, c'mon.

WILLIE SUCKS HE HORRIBLE. BECAUSE OF HIS EGO HE DID NOT MANAGE IN THE MINORS, WHERE HE MIGHT HAVE LEARNED HOW TO MANAGE. WILLIE HAS TO GO WHEN WILL THE WILPONS SEE THAT OMAR SPENT ALOT OF $$$$$$$ AND HAVE NOT RECEIVED POSITIVE RESULTS. YEAH ALL OF YOU PEA BRAINS CAN SAY THAT THEY WON THE NL EAST LAST YEAR. BIT WHOOPEE, THEY STILL FAILED TO MAKE IT TO THE WS AND WIN. SO NO MATTER IF YOU FINISHED LAST OR LOSE THE WORLD SERIES YOUR TEAM ARE NOT THE WORLD CHAMPS. SO THE METS FAILED LIKE ALL OTHER CLUBS EXCEPT FOR THE CARDS. SO WITH THIS SAID ONCE AGAIN I CROWN WILLIE A LOSER AND HE HAS TO GO!!!!!
Posted by: WILLIE HAS TO GO AND OMAR HAS TO GO. | August 30, 2007 07:38 PM
We need J Smith back and let Pedro do his thing. Let Heilman/Sosa close some games for Wagner. let SELE be a middle releiver and SOSA/Heilman take his job. Let Mota go and bring in a minor leaguer for bullpen re-enforcement.

Don't you all know the history of the Mets yet?? EVERY time they make it to the playoffs, they blow it the next year. Check it, I am right!!
Posted by: caren | August 30, 2007 08:23 PM
ha ha caren... you mean how they got to the playoffs in 1999 and blew it in 2000 right oh wait they got to the World Series in 2000... so much for you being right lol...

Now I really would like to know how many of you actually have watched baseball for more then 2 or 3 years. Yes this was a very devastating game and a devastating series sweep. Yes its frustrating, very frustrating. Willie has made some head scratching moves but thank god none of you are the manager or GM. The way you all give up so fast is sickening almost as sickening as the Mets play this week. Now if any of you have any wishes to some day be a manager, GM or even a commissioner, you have alot to learn. I'm sure back in 1999 when the Mets were 2 games out of the wild card with 3 games left you gave up on them. But did they give up? of course not. And because they didn't give up they almost forced a game 7 in the NLCS that year. This is baseball you can look like a champion one day and look like the bad news bears the next. Believe me I was as pissed off and frustrated as anyone after each of these games. But right now the Mets (and the fans) need to suck it up and see what we are made of. For anyone to say the season is over is clueless. Now will we win the division? who know maybe we will maybe we won't but for anyone to say right now that the season is over or that the Mets will be in 3rd by September 5th have alot to learn about baseball. The fact is we have no idea what is going to happen the rest of they way but again anyone who actually feels the season is over has no credibility and no knowledge of sports or history. We will see what the Mets are made of but my question to you all is what are you made of?
Posted by: Christian (aka MetsMan) | August 30, 2007 08:52 PM
lol yes caren but thats not what you said...
Posted by: Christian (aka MetsMan) | August 30, 2007 08:53 PM
oh by the way caren there is an S in my name :o)
Posted by: Christian (aka MetsMan) | August 30, 2007 08:54 PM
It is exciting, though, and I ain't giving up. I love my Mets, 'cept for a few of them.
I think if the bullpen can just hold on and willie seriously takes a look at how to better utilize it, we will win the division and see what happens from there. Pedro should be a shot in the arm and the roster expansion can't hurt, either.

Omar royally fucked the Mets over by not getting any relief help at Julys deadline or after. Its the future or now and Omar failed to get anyone let alone cordero or Gagne. And we're all paying the price now. It hurts me to see one of the starters go 6 or 7 give up 2ERs and the 'pen blows it. The Glue is drying up and the make-shit pen is falling apart. It was only a matter of time.

Here is what Pea Brain Willie said last night after another miserable loss. Willie on SNY after last nights game the game says "We are right where we wanna be, playing meaningful games late in the season. This is fun, I am having fun!" It is fun WINNING meaningful games late in the season. He must be having fun watching his team look like fools and the Bear News Bears. Watching this team is like watching the Mets teams from 1977-1981. If your a true Met then you would know who their field manger was. Yeah his butt buddy Joe ( Nose Picker) Torre. I guess Willie learned from Joe to manage, if Torre did not have all the talent he has had he would suck too. Look at those teams from 77-81. Getting back to Pea Brain Willie, he lacks enthusiasm, sense of urgency, and he needs to stop making stupid comments after the game and admit he has failed and his team sucks like him.
Keep bleeding blue and orange, if they really cared about their fans they would play with more heart and a bigger burning desire to win.

Like I've said before...
Bitch and complain all you want... but you don't dare lose faith.
After this sweep, I'm nervous about the upcoming series against the Braves... but my faith in our boys will not waiver. And yours shouldn't either!
Posted by: Rissa | August 30, 2007 10:12 PM
If we had a normal manager with a strategy and a brain I would have faith. No faith in this team as long as we have a Pea Brain Manager

The Mets get very complacent at times this season, and i think that they have this cocky side where they feel they made the post season already. After taking a 7 game lead going into the third game with the Dodgers, the Mets went into "Coast Mode"
The Mets are still in the drivers seat heading into Atlanta, but they have to look in the rear view and keep an eye on Phillie and the Braves.
This is a crucial series because this will show what team the NY Mets are. Can they win under pressure and in Atlanta?
As far as everyone ripping Willie Randolph, he did everything the same way last year, and because we were by far the best the NL had to offer and winning, everyone was calling Willie a genius. Now that they are scuffling, the NY Monday morning quarterbacks are out. Wagner hasnt pitched in 5 days he should be able to get 6 outs!
The 8th inning was crucial with the heart of the order coming up and i dont disagree with him coming in at all. Perhaps he should have pulled Wagner at some point in the 9th, but the way our bullpen has been, why not let your ace of the pen blow the game, before a Mota or a Heilman does.
Everyone is crying that Wagner was pitching, but isnt it every night that we are crying about our bullpen blowing games. Who was available that u can trust against the middle of that order???
Posted by: Anthony S | August 30, 2007 10:45 PM
The mets didnt lack their killer instinct in this game, they scored 10 runs. They had three problems in this game.
1. Reyes cant buy a hit
2. The bullpen as usual
3 Willie!! Why is Wagner in for 2 innings... he mine as well put Mota thats how dumb Willie looked
Posted by: Aidan O | August 30, 2007 11:34 PM
Now don't get me wrong I have not lost faith by any means but the Mets are really making me nervous right now. For all those people that say we are in first and not the Philly's are a little to comfortable with just a two game lead. As Willie continues to coach he starts to look more and more like old coach Bobby. They both have awesome talent but after a few years poor managerial skills end up killing the team. If by now he hasn't even shown disgust with his team during press conferences then something is wrong. Old Lou would definitely let his players know when they suck! Ok Omar didn't get any relief help before the trade deadline but with the bullpen going the way it is they should at least call up some relief pitching just to try them out whats the worse that can happen they lose a game! It's already been happening and who knows they may stumble across someone that doesn't throw hanging pitches over the plate.
Posted by: JWood | August 30, 2007 11:54 PM
I would also like to add that I have yet to see anyone show nasty control like Pedro but I would really hate for him to come back and have to be the fall guy if the season continues to go bad. Everytime I see a game and even I always see the pitching hanging pitches over the plate and then thats when the singles start stacking up. Whatever happen to the old days when the Mets had pitchers that really worked a strike zone and not just starters. Maybe the owners need to light some fire under Willie and the team like George does in the Bronx to get Joe and the Yankees moving. On one last note if Willie isn't coaching like it's the playoffs now then maybe he should start cause they might not make it. But I'm gonna give the Mets the benefit of the doubt and hope for the best against Atlanta and the rest of this season. Oh and don't blame Reyes for not being productive for one series when other players have gone on longer droubts. Lets believe people. JUST BELIEVE!!
Posted by: JWood | August 31, 2007 12:02 AM
Gary is an honest spokesman. he doesn't hesitate what to say and I repect the guy for being that way. He's right, this was the most devastating and we need to pick ourselves back up from this loss. Lets Go Mets!
Posted by: Grazi | August 31, 2007 01:35 AM
LET ME TELL YOU GUYS, WILLIE MAY MAKE THE WRONG DECISIONS AT TIMES BUT OVER ALL IT'S THE TEAM THAT DOES EVERYTHING. IF WE SLUMP BLAME IT ON THE TEAM, IF WE DON'T WIN GAMES, BLAME IT ON THE TEAM. I BLAME IT ALL N THE TEAM OVERALL. THERE TE ONES GOING OUT THERE AND BELIEVE IT OR NOT AS STRONG AS OUR LINEUP SHOULD BE THEY HAVEN'T SHOWED ME SHIT IN THE PAST FEW GAMES. WE NEED TO GET WITH IT. GET OVER THE PHILLES SERIES AND MOVE ON SO WE DON'T LOSE THE DIVISION TITLE.
Posted by: Grazi | August 31, 2007 01:40 AM
Hey the Phillies have it easier the next 3 days playing the Marlins, but after that we play the REDS and they play the BRAVES. I really hope the Mets can pull it together in Atlanta, and I think it's very possible that they will because they've been lulled out of complacency. And remember how the Cards played at the end of the 2006 season? Well we know all too well how they ended up. LET'S GO METS!!!
Posted by: Joe | August 31, 2007 02:16 AM
Hey Grazi Willie is the one who decides who comes in to pitch though and that is where most of the loses have come in those late innings after the pitching gives up runs. I keep thinking to the days when the Mets were a pitching power house. With pitchers like Doc Gooden, David Cone, Sid Fernandez relievers like Ron Darling, Roger McDowell. They worked a strike zone like crazy.
Posted by: JWood | August 31, 2007 10:30 AM
The way the season has gone I wouldnt be suprised if the Phillies were swept by Florida and the Mets are 4 up on Labor Day
Posted by: steve henderson | August 31, 2007 10:57 AM
Mets fans: stop the whining. That's what Yankee fans do. We still have a two game lead in the division. Philly and Atlanta would rather be where we are. The fact of the matter is that the Phillies and Braves are both better teams than they were last year. We knew going into the season it would not be the cakewalk it was last year. All the fans that get so down on the team after a bad series should stop following baseball and take up knitting. Anyone who knows anything about baseball, a pennant race, or the history of this franchise knows that these kinds of ups and downs are normal. I think that a tougher pennant race is a good thing for this team. The Mets went into October last year without being tested. That's not the case this year, and it means this team will be better prepared for playoff baseball.
Posted by: eklypse | August 31, 2007 11:56 AM
You're right JWood. Willie decides on the bullpen absolutely and our bullben but what difference does it make if our entire bullpen sux this yr. Honestly. They should of gotten a good reliever this yr but overall, if you have a great offensive lineup you can worry about pitching a tiny bit less.
