Pedro Martinez Will Start Monday Against The Reds!

It took what seemed like an eternity, but Pedro Martinez is finally back!

He is slated to start on Monday unless he feels sluggish tomorrow after todays bullpen session.

Pedro said "If my arm doesn't fall off, I will pitch on Monday." he also said "I miss my teammates, I can't stand to be one more day without my team."

He had a very impressive bullpen session that featured an assortment of curve-balls, change-ups, and a fastball that was clocked in the low 90's on the radar gun.

Wilie Randolph, Rick Peterson and Omar Minaya were all very pleased with the results, and after a short meeting, the decision was made to start Pedro on Monday.

There was one more thing that Pedro said during his interview. He said that if his change-up was as good as it was today, he can get anybody in the game out!

I don't know about you guys, but this Mets fan is absolutely stoked!!

Pre Game: Mets vs Atlanta - The Showdown!

The Battle For The NL East Continues Against A Common Foe

New York (73-60) at Atlanta (69-65), Friday, 7:35 p.m.

Pitching matchup

NYM: RHP John Maine (13-8, 3.68 ERA)
This will be Maine's second career start against the Braves. Maine suffered the loss in his previous start against the Dodgers on Sunday. In that game, Maine gave up nine hits and six runs in 5 2/3 innings.

ATL: RHP Tim Hudson (15-6, 3.23 ERA)
Hudson had a nine-game winning streak snapped with a loss in his last start to the Cardinals. Aside from that, he has been sensational this season. Hudson is 2-0 against the Mets in 2007, and 7-2 with a 3.39 ERA in 10 career appearances against New York.

Tonights Lineup

SS Jose Reyes
2B Luis Castillo
3B David Wright
CF Carlos Beltran
LF Moises Alou
1B Carlos Delgado
C Paul Lo Duca
RF Endy Chavez
P John Maine

Player to watch
David Wright continues to stay hot, as he was 3-for-4 on Thursday. David Wright hit his 24th home run Wednesday night and stole his base 30th base on Thursday, putting himself in position for a 30-30 season, the fifth in the Mets' history.

Game Notes

WFAN and Eddie Coleman, reports that Mets pitcher El Duque is flying back to New York for tests on his sore foot. He is out indefinitely. His foot as has been bothering him for his last two starts and the pain increased significantly during yesterdays game.

In a stunning turn of events that are no doubt borne out of desperation, Pedro Martinez will start Monday against the Cincinnati Reds. Pedro had a successful bullpen session this afternoon and was scheduled to pitch his final rehab game on Monday.

Mets left fielder Moises Alou has four hits in six at-bats against Hudson this season. He has hit safely in 17 of his last 18 games.

After a disastrous 44 pitch outing last night, Billy Wagner probably won't be available to pitch tonight and maybe not on Saturday either. He has allowed 16 hits in his last 11 innings pitched, and had blown consecutive saves in last two appearances.

The Mets were counting on huge contributions from Joe Smith and Ambiorix Burgos, but both pitchers are on the DL and at least one, if not both, will be shut down for the season.

Also, Mike Pelfrey and NOT Phil Humber will start tomorrow against the Braves during the FOX Game of the Week. The announcement surprised many in the media, considering Humber's back to back shutouts in AAA, and Mike Pelfrey's lackluster starts.

Lets hope that the Mets can get over the turmoil and chaos of the last 24 hours and play some good old-fashioned Mets baseball.

I am predicting that the Mets will take two games in this series.

LETS GO METS!

UPDATE: Willie Randolph just said that he only expects Orlando Hernandez to miss one start!

Mets News: El Duque Sent Back To New York For Medical Tests

WFAN and Eddie Coleman, reports that Mets pitcher El Duque is flying back to New York for tests on his sore foot.

HE IS OUT INDEFINITELY.

His foot as has been bothering him for his last two starts and the pain increased significantly during yesterdays game. He may be getting a cortisone shot while he is in New York, but that isn't official yet.

No further news is available at this time, but Mets Merized will stay on top of this story.

READY OR NOT, HERE COMES PEDRO!

Also, in a surprising turn of events that are no doubt borne out of desperation, Pedro Martinez may start Monday against the Cincinnati Reds. Pedro had a successful bullpen session this afternoon and was scheduled to pitch his final rehab game on Monday.

This news is still breaking but we will continue to update the story as we get more information.

The Mets are officially in crisis mode.

Tonight's The Start Of Something Big, Or The Beginning Of The End In Atlanta

Apparently Bobby Cox has rearranged his starting rotation over a week ago in preparation for his series with the Mets that begins tonight.

He wants to beat the Mets so bad, that he even pitched John Smoltz on three days rest last week, so that he would be able to be fully rested and ready to start the finale on Sunday.

He plans to load the lineup with lefties against John Maine, and righties against Tom Glavine on Sunday.

As for the Mets...

They can't even figure out who their starting pitcher will be on Saturday.

The Mets will have their work cut out for them in Atlanta.

Chipper Jones and company would like nothing more than to nail the coffin shut on the New York Mets this season.

It's put up, or shut up time for Willie Randolph and the New York Mets.

If you haven't heard todays opening monologue from Joe Benigno, here it is...

Not for the faint of heart.

Thanks to Adam Rubin for sharing this on his blog.

Tonight will be the start of something big for the Mets, or the beginning of the end.

Mets Are Paying For A Bullpen That Was Misconceived From The Start

When Willie Randolph has Rick Peterson make a call to the bullpen, it has become a vicious game of "Choose Your Poison."

It's like playing "Russian Roulette" with six bullets in your six shooter.

"Omar Minaya and Willie Randolph have to assume the blame." That is what Ed Coleman from WFAN had to say.

It was a poorly constructed bullpen that began when Omar Minaya decided to give Guillermo Mota the contract that should have gone to Chad Bradford.

It continued when the Mets dispatched the third best pitching prospect in their system, Brian Bannister, to the Kansas City Royals for the erratic Ambiorix Burgos. While Bannister is now among the top ten starters in the American League, Burgos and his unorthodox delivery is now out until 2009 after Tommy John surgery.

The bullpen was dealt a devastating blow when the Mets top two relief prospects, Royce Ring and Heath Bell, were traded to the San Diego Padres for flops, Jon Adkins and Ben Johnson.

Even highly touted Matt Lindstrom was traded to the Marlins for the disappointing Jason Vargas.

Heath Bell is now one of the premier setup men in the league, while Brian Bannister has become the unequivocal ace of his team

Because of the way the bullpen was ravaged by Minaya, he was forced to pitch 21 year old Joe Smith for over 50 innings this season, leading to a sore arm and placement on the Disabled List this week.

The Yankees had Joba Rules for their prized prospect, but we had "blow the kid's arm out" rules for Joe Smith.

Willie Randolph has refused to define any roles all year for the bullpen and thought it would be cool to just pick and choose relievers in random situations all year long until they became so disoriented that not one of them understands their role on the team.

His constant obsession with pitch counts on the starters, severely ravaged a bullpen that has become overworked and ineffective.

Now Omar and Willie are left with the prospect of a post season dangling by a thread, and a bullpen that has not one pitcher who can be relied upon.

The Mets traded their top pitching prospects at the time, and got absolutely no benefit for them in 2007, and yet they refused to part with any prospects for a chance to obtain any relief for the disaster that has become the Mets bullpen.

The Mets need this bullpen to not only save ballgames, but now they must save the team's post season aspirations as well.

What Are Mets Fans Thinking This Morning?

I thought I would share some of our recent comments and emails with you. None of it may mean much, but it does show the level of anxiety shared by most Mets fans this morning.

Not a good week so far for our Mets. I am not happy with Willie Randolph for sending Wagner out for a second inning. He had already given up a homerun in the 8th. Instead I would have went to Heilman in the 9th. I can't just blame Willie. Wagner is to blame as well for not being able to save the game! - Rob

Hey Mr. Met.. Do me a favor... Tomahawk chop a whole bunch of wood, light a fire, and stick it under this team's a$$ and make them sweep the Braves. I know you can do it. - Yip

That's great, not only does Willies decision to use Wagner for two innings cost us the game, but now he probably can't be used Friday and Saturday during the Atlanta series. That means lots of Mota! Nice going Willie! - Steve

I'm just so sick and tired of people thinking that a bad stretch = doomsday. Yes its frustrating watching your team self destruct, but the nonsense that these people say such as the season is over, or Mets will be in 3rd by September 5th. These people show no sense of reality and no knowledge of the game or its history. Christian

I've never been one of those "get down on your team" type of guy, when the team loses, but right now I can't stand the Mets... Willie Randolph is just a terrible manager. He can't motivate his players to get off their highly over payed butts and produce... he's just like his mentor Torre. - Joey

Wow, what a disaster. Billy Wagner might be suffering from a dead arm, but Willie Randolph is suffering from a dead brain. Wagner's era has gone up over a point in his last 3 or 4 outings. And while complaining of a dead arm, he's put into the game to pitch 2 innings. Nicely done, Willie! - Drew

Willie has made many mistakes this year, but none more critical than today. His handling of the bullpen is awful and his lack of fire or emotion is dragging the team down. We are in serious trouble with no help on the way. Omar should have bit the bullet and traded for Jon Rauch and Chad Cordero. Now we will limp through September hoping to get a wild card berth. - Angst24

Like I've said before... Bitch and complain all you want... but you don't dare lose faith. After this sweep, I'm nervous about the upcoming series against the Braves... but my faith in our boys will not waiver. And yours shouldn't either! - Rissa

Just a sampling of over a hundred comments and messages we received in the last 18 hours.

I would urge Mets fans to remember that our team has overcome many an adversity over their history. It's how they coined the nicknames Miracle Mets and Amazin Mets. It's OK to feel a little disappointment over the Phillies series, but like one of the commenter's above said, don't you dare lose faith!

Lets Go Mets

Can The Mets Recover, Or Will Atlanta Deliver The Fatal Blow?

In a series where taking a split would have been excusable, a sweep of the Mets has turned into the inexcusable. Whatever the Mets did in the series against the Phillies was wrong and whatever the Phils did was right. That is just how it went these past four games. After riding a high over the last couple of weeks, that high after four days has become the low point. It is not going to get any easier when they face a team that they have not won a series against all season. On top of all that, the Amazins are going to have a struggling John Maine on the hill facing off against Tim Hudson.

The focus now has to head to Atlanta or else another city is going to have their brooms out as well. The positive is the schedule since the final two weeks of the season will be against both the Marlins and the Nationals, while the Phils and Braves face off in Philadelphia for three games. Before that is another huge week which again features series against both the Braves and Phillies, this time at Shea. I suggest we all go out there that week and support our team the way the Phillies fans came out and supported their club. There is only so much we can do as fans though. If this series didn’t wake this team up then I don’t know what will.

There does not seem to be any equilibrium with this team, like they are not functioning as a whole. When the starters pitch well and deep into games, the offense can not buy a run. When the offense wakes up and puts up 8-10 runs then the starters can not last more than 3-5 innings. The bullpen just does not have it right now and I am not sure if they are ever going to have it this year. Yes, Billy Wagner has had a great season till now but I would much rather have him have a bad April than a bad August or September. Fans are more forgiving to players that struggle early than the ones that struggle later in the season - just look at David Wright and how he turned around offensively. There are just too many of these meltdowns and I don’t know how much leeway this team could afford to have before possibly losing their NL East lead.

The 2007 Mets are going to drive all their fans crazy this season… as if they haven’t already. However, throughout this whole seesaw ride, we all still bleed the blue and orange. Let’s go Mets.

Opinion: Chin Up, Mets Fans

Alright so today's game really sucked. It REALLY sucked. The entire series the Mets never seemed in command, and frankly the Phillies wanted to win the series worse than the Mets did. So bravo to them, they brought their A game each time this series.

But Mets fans, we have to stay positive. Who is the first place team in the National League east? No matter what you read about whatever team is on the charge, or whatever team is giving the Mets a run for their money, the Mets are still in first place, bottom line. And as long as the Amazins are number one, we have no right to complain or write this team off. It certainly doesn't look good for this team right now, but there is still another month of baseball to go.

Also the Mets don't have to play another game in Philadelphia this year. Now they enter Turner field looking to turn things around, in a must win situation. Call it intuition, but I think this team will play much better with the stakes so high. The time of being "First place to stay" in the NL is over. They will have to play better baseball to win games from here on out. In September the Mets play 21 games against division rivals, they are about to show their true colors this month. Despite all the injuries and misfortunes, this team still has the most talent in the division and we have to keep our cool as Mets fans as this team enters its final stretch of the 2007 regular season. After all, ya gotta believe.

Also if anyone's interested I just now started my own blog, http://saveelimarrero.blogspot.com/. If you guys agree or disagree with me, leave a comment. This was a bit impromptu, but I felt it had to be said because of all the negativity on this blog following this series.

Game Recap:: Phillies 11 - Mets 10

Gary Cohen couldn't have said it any better when he called today's loss the most devastating loss of the season for the Mets.

The Mets suffered a crushing blow at the hands of the Philadelphia Phillies who came back to win 11-10 on a walk-off single by Chase Utley off of Billy Wagner.

The loss as chopped the Mets lead in first place to only two games as they get set to open a series in Atlanta tomorrow against the Braves.

The Philadelphia Phillies are riding high as they slapped the Mets around throughout the entire four-game series and backed up their early season claims that they were the team to beat.

Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley, Ryan Howard and Pat Burrell absolutely crushed Mets pitchers and had their way in almost every critical spot in the game.

The Mets did come back twice in the game, but at no time today or during the series were they ever able to deliver the lethal blow.

The Mets bullpen was rocked to it's core and now even it's most dependable pitcher, Billy Wagner has succumbed to the implosion of what once was one of the top bullpens in the game. Since the All Star break the Mets bullpen has fallen to the bottom of the pile in the National League, with no hope in sight.

Omar Minaya who did not want to pay the price for reliever Chad Cordero at the trade deadline, must now sit on his hands as he is helpless to find any help whatsoever on waivers.

The Mets were counting on huge contributions from Joe Smith and Ambiorix Burgos, but both pitchers are on the DL and at least one, if not both, will be shut down for the season.

Jose Reyes had a terrible series and many of the Mets hitters, save David Wright, failed to come through when the team counted on them.

The team is like a sinking ship with no direction, and now they must face their number one nemesis in the Atlanta Braves.

Rather than bore you with all of the ugly details, I'd like to hear your comments and your concerns on the beleaguered bullpen, the inability to put the game away, and lack of a killer instinct.

There will be no gameball for this recap, just a dozen unaswered questions that left me scratching my head, and chugging down Alka Seltzer cocktails.

Technorati Profile

Just Looking for a Way to Blow Off Some Steam

After the Mets (and our) recent nightmare yesterday, many thoughts raced through my mind as to what my blog should be about today. I would really like to stay cheery and positive, but it would just feel like I’m being phony. So I have decided to go the route of a “fake it till you make it” attitude and just do something completely random and nonsensical…which happens to be a specialty of mine. That being said, here it is…my cast of Mets and their most hated rivals if they were cast for Star Wars, complete with movie quotes.

The Rebel Alliance(Mets)

Jose Reyes as Luke Skywalker – Confident, young and gifted, I can almost hear him say, “I used to bulls eye womp rats in my T-16 back home. They're not much bigger than two meters.”, when faced with an impossible task.

David Wright as Han Solo- The handsome, swashbuckling, get the girl type(or girls in Wrights’ case!) and leader of the good guys. Always one of the first to give his mates a pat on the back. “Great shot, kid, that was one in a million!”

Paul LoDuca as Chewbacca- Okay, what he lacks in height in this role, Paulie makes up for it with a ferocity and passion that are unmatched on the team. It’s probably a good thing he isn’t 7 feet tall and hairy, or there wouldn’t be any teams left to play! As Han told C3PO as R2D2 was beating Chewbacca in a board game,” That's 'cause droids don't pull people's arms out of their
sockets when they lose.”

The Empire(Everyone else)

George Steinbrenner as Emperor Palpatine- Old, wrinkly, scary and armed with a seemingly endless supply of money, he is the symbol of all things evil. He uses his money to hire the best rogues, whiners and over the hill superstars it can buy. All in the name of another division title or to finish ahead of Boston. I believe Obi- Wan put it best about the Bronx when he said,” Mos Eisley spaceport: You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. We must be cautious.”

Roger Clemens as Darth Vader- A shadow of his former self, there actually used to be some good in Clemens before the influence of Emperor Steinbrenner caused him to turn to the dark side and throw not once, but twice at our beloved Mike Piazza. If we were to ask what made him sign with the Skankees I bet he would say,” You don’t know the power of the dark side. I MUST obey my master!”(Meaning the lure of money and Georgie.)

Hope this made you smile if nothing else…May the force be with you! (And the Mets too!)

Mets News: Joe Smith Goes On DL With Sore Arm

If you thought the Mets were going to get a huge boost from the call-ups on September 1st, think again.

This morning, reliever Joe Smith was placed on the Minor League DL with what is being called a tender biceps on his pitching arm.

Smith has not pitched in 10 days and the Mets originally stated it was just a tired arm.

This comes 24 hours after Ambiorix Burgos had season ending Tommy John surgery that will force him to miss all of next season.

Willie Randolph said that Joe Smith might still be able to contribute once he comes off of the DL, but he is now ineligible to play in the post season.

Three weeks ago Burgos and Smith were being looked at as prominent figures to help our beleaguered bullpen.

Episode III - The Umpire Strikes Back

The "Force" was clearly not with the Mets last night as they lost their third straight game in this series and their fourth straight overall.

The umpires have been a big factor in each game, and clearly, the majority of the calls have gone against the Mets.

Last night's call by second base umpire, CB Bucknor, kept the Mets from scoring the tying run and snuffed out a would-be comeback from the Mets. The call clearly showed that Marlon Anderson had slid into the bag and touched the base with his foot, but the ump had nothing to say and invoked a rarely used rule to back up his case.

Willie Randolph rushed to the scene of the crime, but alas, the umpire just smirked and had nothing to say about it.

"He didn't exactly say why he was out," Randolph said of his conversation with Bucknor. "Obviously, he thought there was some type of obstruction or something, I guess. I said it to him very plainly, 'Marlon has his feet on the base.'

"It was a good hard slide. It's baseball. I think it's because we're not used to seeing good aggressive baseball anymore."

Umpires used to be referred to as the gentlemen of the game. Today they are more commonly known by less affectionate monikers such as arrogant asses, instigating idiots, blind fools, and some more that I dare not mention in this blog.

Umpires believe they are bigger than the game and they do not hide the fact that they relish the moments where they decide who wins and loses, rather than letting the teams play decide.

Their strike zone can be as small or as vast as they choose, and you have to play three innings to try and find out what the strike zone will be on any particular day. But sometimes that formula don't work, as was the case on Monday when the same CB Bucknor was calling the balls and strikes. It seemed that high and inside strike had been called a ball throughout the game, that is until the last two innings of the game where it all of a sudden became a strike again.

The Mets should have won last nights game without having to let such an egregious call by CB Bucknor cost them the game.

In that regard, the Mets have only themselves to blame.

Stay tuned for Episode IV... the final chapter in this 4-game series.

Derek's Dribblers: The Mets Should Be 14 Games Up, Not 3

Earlier this week I read a blog from the 2004 team prior to the trade deadline. Wow did that bring back some painful memories. The one thing I hated about Art Howe was that he never used his gut instinct, and always tried to play by the book. That's why his players eventually quit on him and it eventually cost him his job.

The one thing I like about Willie Randolph is how he tends to go on his gut feeling more often than not as opposed to managing every single inning by the book. I know he has made some questionable decisions with the bullpen, but his offense has not executed when needed all season.

The Mets should be 14 games up, not 3.

The offense has been the weakest link all season and I do not see them getting past the first round in the post season, even if they make it that far.

Only recently has the pitching been exploited and I blame the offense for that. I would like to see Marlon Anderson get more at bats down the stretch. I would also like it if Willie went with a 6 man rotation down the stretch to give John Maine, Oliver Perez and Orlando Hernandez a much needed breather. I have faith in Mike Pelfrey. I said it in my last blog and I feel I don't need to keep repeating myself. I also feel Philip Humber should be given a shot as well.

As far as the pen goes, Mota should never be used for more than an inning, Sosa should get an increased workload, Joe smith should get a recall and Sele should be cut. Hopefully the Mets could take two out of three against the Braves this weekend. If they could, the schedule favors them the rest of the way and there should be no reason for them not to repeat as NL East champs!

Pre Game: Mets vs Phillies - Game 3

New York (73-58) at Philadelphia (69-62), Wednesday, 7:05 p.m.

Tonights Lineup

SS Jose Reyes
2B Luis Castillo
3B David Wright
CF Carlos Beltran
LF Moises Alou
1B Carlos Delgado
C Paul Lo Duca
RF Lastings Milledge
P Oliver Perez

Pitching Matchup

NYM: LHP Oliver Perez (12-8, 3.34 ERA)
This will be the 24th start of the season for Perez and his seventh career start against Philadelphia.

PHI: LHP Jamie Moyer (11-10, 5.16 ERA)
Moyer has given up 24 home runs this season.

Player to watch
Jose Reyes has not had a hit in the first two games of this series. Look for him to bounce back tonight.

Notes

The first two games of this huge four-game series between the National League East rival Mets and Phillies have provided dramatic moments, big home runs and terrific defensive plays. But the Mets have dropped both and have now lost three in a row.

Pedro Martinez is going to join the team Friday for a bullpen session. There is no chance that he will start Saturdays game. Damn!

Does anyone trust anyone in this bullpen anymore? Apparently Omar does and according to him the Mets bullpen is locked and loaded and ready to go. You gotta love his confidence, even though it might be displaced.

Lastings Milledge is back in the lineup and is playing right field tonight. Against a lefthander?!

Perez will face Philadelphia's 44-year-old lefty Jamie Moyer, who will start for the 27th time this year. Moyer was knocked around in his last outing Friday against the Padres.

The Mets 3-4-5 hitters have been absolutely dreadful in this series. Something's gotta give!

Please Vote: Who Is The Biggest Mets Killer?

Here are the results of last weeks poll question which asked the question:

Do You Want Guillermo Mota On The Post Season Roster?

I'm sure it would surprise nobody that an overwhelming 58% of you said NO WAY. I wonder if any of you voted again after last nights debacle?

Only 9% of you said that you DEFINITELY wanted Mota to pitch in the post season. A number that I still feel was WAY to high.

IT'S OFFICIAL: GUILLERMO MOTA HAS THE HIGHEST ERA OF ANY ACTIVE PITCHER IN THE NATIONAL LEAGUE!

And yet, there are actually Mets fans who defend him and say he's a good pitcher?

It's so ironic that it's the Yankees who have moved swiftly to replace ineffective pitchers like Scott Proctor, Kei Igawa, Tyler Clippard and most recently Mike Mussina. Meanwhile, the Mets continue to parade Guillermo Mota out there day in, and day out, despite the fact that he is an opposing hitters dream come true...

Anyhow, let's move on to this weeks Poll Question which asks,

Which of these Braves or Phillies is the biggest Mets killer?

1. Jimmy Rollins

2. Chipper Jones

3. Pat Burrell

4. John Smoltz

You can vote once a day on our poll host to the right.

We Still Have Our Ace In The Hole

Much has been made this year, (especially by me) of the lack of passion and excitement that has been missing from the Mets this year. With the exception of a Paulie LoDuca blow- up it has been pretty monotonous. It’s hard for me to say that when we have the most exciting player in baseball on the team in Jose Reyes…

Thankfully, we are soon to get the boost we have been waiting for in the return of Pedro Martinez. In 2004, when the Mets first signed Pedro, many of us claimed instant credibility for the Mets. He brought with him 3 Cy Young Awards, recent World Championship, and winning personality, so no one could really disagree. While he didn’t win 20 games or have an ERA under 1.00, Pedro provided a spark and joy that had been missing during the Art Howe regime. His signing ultimately and arguably paved the way for the signing of Carlos Beltran who most also agree would not be in Queens if not for Pedro. Carlos Delgado almost joined the party but was seduced by the Marlins money and recent success, another who never would have had Queens on their team wish list if not for Pedro. All of this kept bringing me back to a quote made by David Ortiz when told of Pedro’s visit to the Mets. “Pedro ain’t going to no Mets.”

Big Papi thankfully isn’t known for his clairvoyance.

Now, three years later and coming off right rotator cuff surgery(which has an 80- 90% success rate)predictably will thrust himself into the spotlight again. Granted, he may not throw in the mid 90s anymore, but he won’t have to. Thoughts of what he has the ability to do are going to be racing through the batters minds, and Pedro will capitalize on that. A fresh Pedro Martinez is going to do for the Mets what any trade deadline move would have done. If he brings back to Shea what he is expected to bring, no one will be surprised if the Mets leave Atlanta and Philly where they belong... in the dust.

Willie "Must Go" Chants?

Alright I'm not ready to kick this guy out of town yet, but given the Mets recent success at Shea, I was hoping that the team wouldn't stink it up in Phili. I'll give the Mets a pass for their first loss to the Phillies, because Brian Lawrence is a mediocre pitcher who shouldn't have even been pitching that game, but for Willie to constantly rely on guys who cannot perform anymore.... ie. game two with Mota ... that's what really gets me.

Willie did a tremendous job with the bullpen last year, because he had a strong bullpen. This year with the pen far more unreliable, he constantly struggles with who to put in and when to take someone out. Mota needs to be sent to the minors, but it wasn't his fault last night. It was Willie Randolph's. Sosa should've been starting that inning, because frankly, asking Mota to give you two strong innings is asking far too much. Mota's been horrible this year, but it doesn't matter. Willie will put him in. Ditto for Heilman. Ditto for Sele. I know Willie's just buying time until the rosters expand - when he can use - say Humber or Pelfrey in some of these spots- but the bottomline is it's put up or shut up time for this team. It's time for them to act like a first place team. Last week, I wrote how I saw some chemistry coming and I had confidence in this team. I've lost it quickly, which stinks. I just don't like when we throw wins away like they did last night. In any event, I digress, and I'll also single out LoDuca for coming up limp last night.  Moving on...

I sound like such a pessimistic Mets fan, but I can't help myself after last night...

Mets Attitude: Is it Arrogance or Swagger?

As the Mets meander through the dog days of August, I wonder if the overall attitude that seemingly distills throughout the clubhouse is too overconfident. Now, I am not in the dugout sitting next to Jose and the Wise Owl munching away on some proverbial sour cream and onion ridged potato chips but like many of you, I feel like I have a pretty good grasp of the team atmosphere.

Everyone wants their team of choice to have a certain swagger about them. Confidence is the key in almost any successful competitive situation. But some very knowledgeable Mets fans that I have spoken to recently feel that this “confidence” is the cause of the occasional complacent losses that exasperates us fans. This also might be the reason why we have not strung together more than 5 wins in a row all year. This teams too-frequent self-righteous approach might actually be a direct result of their over confidence and self-entitlement.

I don’t want to get everybody’s panties caught in a bunch or anything. We are in first place and no team in the National League has a greater lead over the second place team. We are 8 games worse than last year but it also seems that every other team is as well. I am however; a big proponent of the “Momentum Wins Championship Theory,” which I coincidently just fabricated.  This is when the team/player is any sporting competition wins the championship because they went into the final, deciding, games with momentum. This is why Wild Card teams have advanced deep into the playoffs quite often. Because they often have to win multiple games in a row to even get a spot in the playoffs and once they do get in they can keep on rolling.

I’d like to think that the additions of Endy Chavez and Pedro Martinez will infuse this ostensibly unworried team with energy and true swagger. This is a new year for the Mets, and just because they made it to Game 7 last year, doesn’t entitle them to have any type of “we belong here” attitude.  A gracious swagger will translate to an urgent, “win now”, attitude on the field and from that; we can start to rev up for the final pennant race and championship run.

On A Night When Victory Seemed Certain, Gloom And Doom Prevailed

Tom Glavine was in search of victory 302, and had the win in the palm of his hands Tuesday night.  He had tossed seven scoreless innings, on 8 hits and walked none. Had a 2-0 lead with the help of Carlos Delgado who hit a 2 run homer in the top of 2nd inning. Glavine left the game feeling as if he had win number 302 in the books.  However, it wasn't meant to be.

The Mets bullpen once again managed to undo another masterful effort from Tom Glavine. It began to unravel when Pedro Feliciano quickly gave up a solo home run to Jimmy Rollins to start the 8th, followed by a walk to Pat Burrell. The walk would come back to bite the Mets, especially after Shane Victorino came in to pinch run for Burrell. While attempting to steal second base, Paul Lo Duca's throw went through Luis Castillo's legs and into center field, allowing Victorino, who represented the tying run, to go to 3rd.

Heilman is called upon to diffuse the situation and face the righty hitting Aaron Rowand, who hits a dribbler down the third base line that stayed fair and allows Victorino to score and tie the game, thus denying Tom Glavine a victory.

By the 9th inning, every Mets fan is praying for the offense to do some late inning damage, but their would be no late inning dramatics on this night.

In the bottom of the 9th, Willie Randolph calls on Guillermo Mota who got the Phillies to quickly end the inning 1-2-3.  The game moved on to the 10th inning and still there was a glimpse of hope for the Mets, but all the praying in the world couldn’t get the offense to capitalize. Then, the Mota we’ve all come to dread, started the tenth inning with a leadoff single to Victorino, and followed that up with a 2 run game-winning blast from last year's Home Run Derby Champ, Ryan Howard. Game over.

It doesn’t make sense to me.  How we can have a lead and let it slip by us like that.  Does the bullpen have a personal vendetta against Tom Glavine?  It seems that more often than not, his best efforts are laid to waste by either a lack of run support or an implosion by the bullpen. Tonight it was both. It wasn't the first time Glavine lost a would-be win in such heart-breaking fashion. It was Mota, who blew his 2-0 lead in what would have been his 300th victory at the time. Who could forget the icy cold stare that came from Christina Glavine behind first base that day?

Doesn’t Willie get it? If they can demote Joe Smith back down to Triple A, so that he can work on his pitching why can’t they do the same for Mota?

Does he not see what we as fans see? Mota is good for about an inning, and that's stretching it.

Something needs to be done, because this bullpen has been widely inconsistent all season and it’s not getting any better. Sometimes, I believe, that we the fans could do a better job of running this baseball club.

What Will It Take?

There are two people on the planet who are infallable- the Pope and Guillermo Mota. It seems that Mota can really do no wrong. Willie Randolph has force fed Guillermo Mota to the Mets faithful this season to no avail. It seems that whenever Mota comes into a game you can hear Willie Randolph telling us, "LETS SEE IF HE CAN GET THROUGH A COUPLE OF INNINGS." It worked against the Dodgers when the Mets were already losing the game in a no pressure situation. But tonight was very different.

Guillermo Mota had already pitched a scoreless frame before trotting his steroid-free body out to the mound for the 10th inning. Shane Victorino greeted him with a single up the middle, and then after a brief battle with Ryan Howard, a baseball was flying into the left field stands, 4-2 game over. Mota had blown yet ANOTHER game this season. The Phillies are now just 4 games behind the Mets. Besides Mota not knowing how to pitch (A fastball with a 1-2 count), Willie Randolph also apparentley forgot how to manage. Ryan Howard up, tired Guillermo Mota on the mound, rested Scott Schoeneweis in the bullpen, OH WELL LETS JUST SEE HOW THINGS SHAKE OUT. As if Mota would REALLY RARE BACK AND FIRE A FASTBALL RIGHT BY RYAN HOWARD FOR STRIKE THREE!! Yeah!!! Randolph showed an indifference to the team and Mets fans by keeping Mota in the game to face Howard in an important game. Its so easy to make game decisions from behind a keyboard but any one of us could have better managed this game. Accusing Willie Randolph of terrible managing tonight would be like backseat driving for Ray Charles. Mota had NO business being in the game by the 10th inning.

I really have nothing else to say at this point, but please, please, please Omar Minaya get rid of Guillermo Mota. Designate him for assignment, place him on waivers, outright release him, do something to rid this team of his presence. He is losing games for us left and right. If he can't do his job for this team, THEN GET RID OF HIM. GET RID OF GUILLERMO MOTA.

Mets News: Endy Chavez Activated, Brian Lawrence Optioned

Endy Chavez was finally activated from the Disabled List today and will be the starting right fielder in tonights game against the Phillies.

Brian Lawrence was optioned to New Orleans to make room for him. He was supposed to be the starter on Saturday against the Braves, but now the Mets must go with someone else because Lawrence has to spend the mandatory 10 days in the minors before being recalled.

It will be great to see Endy tonight in right field!

The Mets continue to get healthier...

Hey Mets Fans, Get Off Of That Ledge!

Okay, fellow Mets fans. It was a horrid Monday. Forget about it. Sweep it under the rug. There's plenty to look forward to and life will get better in Metville.

I don't want to hear any trash talk about jumping off buildings or overdosing on pills.

Yes, it was Brian Lawrence on the mound and he's been nothing short of horrific. Kind of makes you long for Mike Pelfrey.

There weren't too many positives to talk about. Carlos Beltran continued to scorch the ball, even when he made an out. Paul LoDuca managed two hits, one of the soft touch.

Did you notice David Wright arguing with blue after being rung up on a called third strike after his second at bat? It looked like a letter high strike, David, much too close to take.

How much more must we endure of Scott Schoeneweis? Please! Hook him and sink him.

Alright. Turn the page and look forward to tonight. Tom Glavine's going for 302. Adam Eaton has a near 7.00 era. His string of success against us will end.

Keep the faith. Go Red Sox!

The Mets Won't Find Any Significant Help On September 1st

Too much is being made out of the upcoming roster expansion on September 1st.

If the Mets thought they had any real help for the major league roster, that player would have already been called up weeks ago,

I think that the only real help the Mets will get out of this roster expansion, are the two guys Adam Rubin mentioned in his blog this morning. (Joe Smith and David Newhan).

The one thing we can all hang our hats on is the return of Pedro in about a week to ten days.

Even if he is nowhere near the pitcher he once was, he will still be an upgrade over many of the pitchers in our rotation.

The one guy that I thought would have been a big help in the bullpen aside from Joe Smith, was Burgos. But now he may be out for the season.

The Mets already have everything they need to win a World Series this year. They have all of the Wright stuff.

Despite all of our worries, the Phillies and Braves have a lot more worries than we do. ;-)

Injury News: Ambiorix Burgos Might Be Out For The Season

This just in...

As first reported by Mark Hale of the New York Post, Ambiorix Burgos is slated to be looked at in New York due to right elbow problems. Don't be stunned if he needs Tommy John surgery.

If Burgos does in fact need surgery on his elbow, don't expect him back before the 2009 season.

Mets acquired RHP Ambiorix Burgos from the Royals for RHP Brian Bannister in the off-season.

After posting an 0-2 record with a 9.72 ERA this spring, he made the team, but was sent down in May to make room for Guillermo Mota. He has had some arm problems ealier in the month.

In case you're wondering...

Brian Bannister is coming off of his first complete game of the season to improve his record to 10 -7 with a 3.28 ERA while pitching for the last place Kansas City Royals. The 26 year-old right-hander is currently 8th in the league in ERA, and has become the undisputed ace of the team.

Martinez Is Doing It The Pedro Way

It's been a long and bumpy ride all season long for the Mets' long list of would-be number five starters.

It started out with so much hope and promise after Mike Pelfrey won the job coming out of Spring Training, but after quickly falling to 0-6, a poorly executed game of musical chairs began.

The Mets have lacked a true ace all season long. A true stopper, if you will. It's prevented the Mets from having a winning streak of more than four games, all season long. Give credit to this team for enduring this situation and yet still finding themselves atop the NL East.

They say that patience is a virtue. Well, the Mets' patience is about to be rewarded in grand fashion.

The long awaited return of Pedro Martinez is now as close as one of his high and inside pitches, buzzing past your ear. The Mets have done what they had to do, to make it this far. They've held down the fort with guys like Chan Ho Park, Jason Vargas, Mike Pelfrey, Jorge Sosa and Brian Lawrence.

Now it's time for the ace of this team to resume his rightful place at the head of a Mets rotation that has lacked consistency and showmanship.

Pedro Martinez has worked hard to get to this point, and he did it with hardly any setbacks. He showed up to his first rehab game ready to play, and since then he has continued to improve and most importantly, refine his extensive assortment of devastating pitches. He is what we call a perfectionist. Rather than mowing down minor league hitters at an alarming rate, he chose to hone his pitches and throw them with pinpoint accuracy instead.

During his last rehab start, Pedro had his best performance yet. He threw 88 pitches in a six inning outing that had him proclaiming,"I'm ready to help the Mets."

During the sixth inning of that game, with runners on second and third, and only one out, his manager walked to the mound ready to pull him out of the game, but Pedro wouldn't have any of that. He was then asked to walk the cleanup hitter and set up the double play. Pedro shook off that suggestion and said, 'this is my test" and convinced his manager to let him handle things the "Pedro way."

The inning ended just like so many other innings have, when Pedro was in danger in the past. He struck out the next batter on three pitches and ended the inning and his outing with a weak popup for the final out. Simply put, it was vintage Pedro.

He has not allowed an earned run in his last two rehab starts, and even though he feels he belongs, Willie Randolph and Omar Minaya want him to do it one more time before joining the big league team.

He is expected to throw up to 100 pitches in his final and biggest challenge yet.

Expect him to continue blowing away each and every obstacle, just as he has throughout his long and extraordinary career.

That's the Pedro Way.

Does The Expanded Roster Help In A Pennant Race?

For the first time in who knows how long, the Mets finally have all their regulars in the lineup at the same time.  With the return of Paul LoDuca and Luis Castillo to the lineup tonight, we get to enjoy the team that Omar Minaya so intelligently put together to win us a World Championship.

But don’t get too used to seeing these guys all together out there.  In fact, by the time Pedro Martinez makes his comeback in about 10 days, the September call-ups will have already joined the team.  And as soon as the Mets clinch (which I know is some time away), the first string guys will yield way to the up-and-coming stars and backup players.

But what kind of effect does the expanded roster have on a ball club?  The obvious is that the regulars get time off, so that they are well rested, both physically and mentally for the postseason.  And the flip side of that is that the backups get more playing time, so that they too are prepared for the postseason.  However, Ron Darling eluded to the fact that you have all these young guys who come up after their minor league season has ended, and they don’t realize what the big leaguers have done all season to get to where they are, and they don’t take things seriously.  It makes me think - could that kill the morale?  Could it frustrate the regular 25 guys?  Would Willie ever let that get in the way of winning?  It didn’t happen last year.  Considering we lost two of our starting pitchers just before the postseason began, we faired pretty well.  But it does make you wonder if that’s why teams who are so successful all season long, suddenly struggle in the playoffs.

As I sit here and write this, the Mets are losing to the Phillies 5-2.  The NL East is far from being wrapped up.  These are the games the Mets MUST win (against Philly and Atlanta) because it kills two birds with one stone.  Not only do we win, but we don’t have to worry if they lose, because we already took care of that.

In closing, I would just like to share my excitement in Endy Chavez’s return to the team tomorrow.  He is truly one of my favorite Mets and I just wish his return was at home, because I know he is a fan favorite at Shea as well.  In any event, the Mets still have work to do.  And as their new stadium’s corporate sponsor (Citi) states, “Let’s Get it Done.” … I think I’ll just stick with “Let’s Go Mets!”

PS…I worked for Citi for 5 years, so I felt a bit obligated to use their line!

Hardly A Wells Performance

Wouldn't you know 'ol Grady Little had something up his sleeve by pulling off the unthinkable in the Dodger fifth Sunday? David Wells, plucked off the San Diego scrap heap less than three weeks ago, places a bunt down the third base line. Hardly a blur out of the box, Wells chugs down toward first, his waist-line satchel bag bouncing about and barely beats the throw by David Wright.

Sporting a sheepish grin, Wells was enjoying this accomplishment, even more so when he scored to make it 3-2 Dodgers, a lead West Coast blue would never relinquish.

To add insult to injury, Wells finishes his five inning stint by striking out Moises Alou with the bases loaded.

Okay. It's only one game. But the Mets had some opportunities to make a statement. Only Wright could manage a two-run double. Everyone else seemed to be sleepwalking through Sunday.

Now, we stand at 3-3 on this 13-game "Our Challenge" that was dubbed by Paul LoDuca. Aren't you glad they'll be on the road for a week? Since I predicted 8-5 during this stretch, they must go 5-2 in Philly and Atlanta.

This is our time to separate the men from the boys, to move a step closer to a second straight NL East flag, so we can settle some unfinished business.

The Phillies and Braves want to keep us in their rear view mirror. But we don't intend to let them.

Last year, after a home stand in August with the Rockies and Cardinals, the Mets were 76-49. You can see why we're a few games shy of that this year. Yes, we have been much maligned. But this is the time when he have to step it up. We're better than this and we must prove it!

Starting tonight. Against the cheese steaks.

A Dreadful Reminder Of Mets Past

Today, I was browsing Mets blogs and came across a blog, titled the Mets blog that has not been active since 2004.
-
On a blog dated Tuesday, July 13, 2004 the writer writes a letter to Jim Duquette which reminds us of the misery that our team was just 3 years ago.
-
Note: even though they, at that point were .500 yet 2 games back, they ended the season 20 games under .500 and a dreadful 25 games back. Here it is:
Dear Jim,
Let me inform you that you've been doing an outstanding job up to this point in the season. The acquisition of Richard Hidalgo has been a tremendous plus and the team has soared because of it. As the July 31st trade deadline draws closer and closer, I feel it is my duty to give suggestions that would greatly improve the Mets chances of winning this very season, and at the same time preserve the future of the team.
-Trade Wigginton, Brazell and Duncan for Kris Benson. I heard the Randy Johnson stories, but I feel it'll just cost way too much. The Angels will drive up his price tag tremendously to areas not worth reaching. Benson is a safe acquisition, plus with the help of Rick Peterson he could turn into a Jason Schmidt-esque pitcher.
-Call up Wright. This is an obvious. With Wigginton being traded, it's Wright's time to take control of the hot corner. This will be a huge boost to this team, especially defensively. Wigginton just doesn't cut it with the glove.
-Acquire a reliever. One name that sticks out in my mind is Eddie Guardado. Similar to what Florida did last season when they acquired Ugueth Urbina, they made him the setup man until Looper faltered the 2nd half. Sure, Looper has been amazing, but he's always been a great 1st half pitcher. If he can hold it together for the 2nd half then having Guardado as a setup man would be a great acquisitin. He's a lefty arm in the pen and should allow the Mets to trade Stanton, who just doesn't cut it.
-Give Scott Erickson a shot. He deserves it and could be much better than either Seo or Ginter,
-Try to go into August 1st with the following roster:
LINEUP:
Reyes (2B),
Matsui (SS),
Piazza (1B),
Floyd (LF),
Hidalgo (RF),
Wright (3B),
Cameron (CF),
Wilson/Phillips (C)
ROTATION: Glavine, Leiter, Trachsel, Benson, Erickson
BULLPEN: Bottalico, Franco, Looper, Moreno, Guardado, Parra, Wheeler (until Strickland's ready)
BENCH: Spencer, McEwing, Zeile, Valent
woah.

Pre Game: Mets vs. Phillies - Game One Of A Key Four Game Series

Here it is, much of the season's work put into this series (yea I am kind of exaggerating but still, this is huge!)

Mets @ Phillies Game 1 of 4

The Pitching Matchup:

Brian Lawrence, RHP (1-1, 5.57)

Lawrence has yet to pitch spectacularly as a Met, but has given his team a chance to win in every one of his four starts with the team -- never allowing more than four runs. He's won only once in six career starts against the Phillies, but he has held their hitters to a respectable .241 average in nearly 40 innings.

vs.

J.D. Durbin, RHP (5-3, 5.44)

Durbin has actually pitched better than his numbers suggest. Since the Mets pounded him for six runs in 4 2/3 innings of his Phillies debut in June, Durbin's gone 5-2 with a 3.45 ERA, and one save.

...not the most desirable pitching matchup...

The Lineup:

SS Jose Reyes
2B Luis Castillo
3B David Wright
CF Carlos Beltran
1B Carlos Delgado
LF Moises Alou
C Paul Lo Duca
RF Shawn Green
P Brian Lawrence

Milledge out of the lineup tonight after having a strange game yesterday.

Welcome back Castillo! Luis Castillo makes his return from a sore knee.

Billy
