The Mets have a second interview scheduled this week for Sandy Alderson, who is the only candidate so far with a second interview planned. He is the front runner, and arguably the name with the most potential impact. The Mets are asking about Texas’ Jon Daniels, who is a hot property, but Alderson has done it consistently and I believe would bring the highest degree of respectability to the organization. What the Mets need now […]
Whomever is the next Mets’ general manager, I hope he puts a premium on upgrading the minor league system. Although not as bare as in previous seasons, the minor league talent is a concern, especially when placed in comparison to the final four teams in the League Championship Series. While each had added talent through trades and free agency, a thread of the four finalists is having a strong core in the minor leagues. They […]
Following the Mets’ GM search brings a couple of thoughts to mind. I don’t see the Mets hiring Sandy Alderson plus Rick Hahn, as has been suggested. I believe the job is Alderson’s for the taking, which would enable him to help groom John Ricco to be his successor. I don’t think they’ll end up hiring one assistant GM (Hahn) when they won’t interview their current assistant GM. If they did, they’ll take a risk […]
The interview process works both ways, and it would be fascinating to know the questions the GM candidates are asking of the Wilpons this week. I would think these would be some of them: During the press conference to announce the dismissals of Omar Minaya and Jerry Manuel, both Wilpons said ownership took responsibility. However, other than saying they hired the wrong people, what mistakes did Jeff and Fred Wilpon specifically make? Do the Wilpons […]
Watching Roy Halladay make history yesterday made me wonder if he could have made it for the Mets. Reportedly, the Mets rejected a trade proposal from Toronto that would have had them sending Jon Niese, Bobby Parnell, Ruben Tejada and Fernando Martinez to the Blue Jays. It would be great to have Halladay, especially in light of Johan Santana’s injury, but it never was going to happen. Why? Because it wasn’t true, said then Blue […]
Whomever the Mets hire as general manager I will be curious to see his take on Jose Reyes. Will he believe the team should be built around Reyes, or would the Mets be better served to deal him as an attempt to plug several holes, notably in the rotation and bullpen? The path of least resistance would be to pick up Reyes’ $11 million option for 2011, then use that season as the basis to […]
I watched Fred and Jeff Wilpon squirm yesterday with embarrassment and pain. It was clear to me by their body language and tone of voice they felf genuine embarrassment and frustration of having to go through the firing and hiring process once again. They were under the glare of the spotlight not only in New York, but the baseball community, and they were admitting the last six years under Omar Minaya were under them. That […]
Personally, I’d like him back in the same role next season, but I have to wonder. Takahashi is a free agent this winter and wants to be a starter, and those starts against the Yankees and Phillies only reinforce that thought in his mind. His numbers are superior coming out of the bullpen than as a starter. However, they are representative numbers that could improve if he worked at that role. He gave the Mets […]
It was interesting to hear Jerry Manuel evaluate his performance a couple of nights ago on SNY, admitting he pushed the envelope in bringing back Jose Reyes and Carlos Beltran, and the experiment with Reyes at third. Much of the self-evaluation had been written by posters at the time, but it must be remembered Manuel is working off different information and conditions that we were. Quite simply, Manuel knew there was pressure on him to […]
