I couldn’t bear to watch the conclusion of Game 5 last night. I turned it on to check the score and then immediately turned it back off. The Philadelphia Phillies, our arch rivals, had won the World Series. There’s a guy that lives on my street that has erected a Phillies flag and a Phillies scarecrow in his yard. As much as I am tempted to go write “suck” under the flag, all I can [...]
Watching our arch rivals, the Philadelphia Phillies, get to the World Series guaranteed that this off-season is going to be particularly longer (and particularly more painful) than usual. But lets face it: the Phillies deserve it. They played with heart while we played like we were dead. Their offense came through in the clutch and ours didn’t. Their bullpen saved games while ours blew games. Seeing that we would have been up on the Phillies [...]
Earlier this week, Mike Francesa suggested trading David Wright because he is nowhere to be found in pressure games. This idea to me is laughable, mainly because 25-year-old Gold Glove 3rd baseman who average 29 homers and 114 RBI and hit over .300 in their first four seasons grow on trees. Don’t we wish? So I wrote a little something I hope you will enjoy. Omar Minaya sits in his office and watches as Shea [...]
It was like the movie Groundhog Day. Except instead of waking up to Sonny & Cher every morning, once again, we are waking up the day after the Mets were eliminated from playoff contention in the last game of the season. Last year was heartbreaking because the lead lost and this year was heartbreaking because it was the final game at Shea. However, I am not as devastated as I was last year. I had [...]
Okay, it might not be as storied as Yankee Stadium but it still doesn’t change the fact that Shea Stadium is also closing, being knocked down, and destined to be a parking lot for Citi Field. I’m angry with the Mets right now. It seems like every year around this time, we turn into a bunch of choke artists. Johan Santana was supposed to pitch the game of his Mets career…..tomorrow. Now that desperation calls [...]
The Mets climbed back into first place after a 9-5 victory over the much maligned Braves. Oh, and that one team in Philadelphia got walloped by the Marlins (Yay Marlins!) Welcome to another installment of Hot or Not. I’m hoping the Mets can carry this column into the post season. Daniel Murphy and Nick Evans got key hits in last night’s victory. Earlier in the week, they had to go through the airport in nothing [...]
I love David Wright as much as the next Mets fan (okay, maybe even more) but he seems to be immune to any blame for the Mets current affairs. I got excited as David finally reached the .300 mark last week and I cried when David entered a 1-for-18 slide that puts his current average at .293. It’s nice to see that a guy like Brian Schnieder, who isn’t really expected to hit the ball, [...]
The New York Mets have 17 games left to play. As has been the story all season, we blew a 7 game lead with 17 left to play. It’s bad enough we historically collapsed, but if I have to hear about it on a national broadcast one more time, I’ll break my TV. Seriously, the Mets have moved on and so should the media. There are teams that are slumping right now *cough* Brewers *cough* [...]
Last night, the New York Mets were down to their last strike. Luis Castillo got on base, followed by David Wright and Carlos Delgado. Enter Carlos Beltran. The first pitch he sees off Kevin Gregg ends up in the right-center field stands, in the section of Dolphin Stadium aptly known as the “Fish Tank.” And with that swing of the bat, Carlos Beltran single-handedly beat the Marlins. Welcome to another installment of “Hot or Not.” [...]
