Newsday’s Neil Best was fortunate enough to meet with Keith Hernandez recently. Keith was gracious enough to allow his camera crew to film him and his lovely wife Kai in their beautiful Long Island home in Sag Harbor. I absolutely loved all the vintage bobblehead dolls that you could see everywhere, as well as all the hardware he accumulated throughout his career including two miniature versions of the 1986 and 1982 World Series trophies. You […]
Neil Best of Newsday has learned that WFAN’s Howie Rose will leave the radio broadcast booth where he has done a brilliant job as the Mets’ play by play man, and join Tim McCarver during Saturday’s FOX broadcast of the Mets versus the Phillies. For those of you still watching the Mets . . . WFAN play-by-play man Howie Rose will call the game against the Phillies on Fox Saturday afternoon. Rose has worked games […]
John Maine took a big step toward his return to the Mets today in his rehab start at Port St. Lucie. Pretty impressive outing even if he was facing Single-A competition. I was actually hoping that the Mets would shut him down, but I guess there’s nothing wrong with letting him air it out and seeing if that shoulder is ok. There are some reports circulating that suggest the Mets will not offer John Maine […]
During the trade deadline, Omar Minaya sent Billy Wagner to the Red Sox for a couple of prospects. Billy Wagner is projected to be a Class A free agent, and would have netted the Mets two first round draft picks next June by offering him arbitration which Wagner would have certainly declined. One of the prospects the Mets got was AAA first baseman, Chris Carter. Carter was then placed on waivers by the Red Sox, but was pulled […]
Sorry about the title, but I couldn’t resist. This comes from NPB Tracker by way of MLBTR… The Mets have signed Japanese teenager Taiki Kawasaki to a minor league contract. Kawasaki is a 17 year old left handed pitcher who had been training at Julio Franco’s baseball academy in Florida. Apparently, Kawasaki left Japan after finishing high school last year and came to the United States hoping to catch on with a major league team. He […]
Jon Heyman and Joel Sherman are both saying that Dr. David Altchek will be performing surgery on both Johan Santana and Oliver Perez on Tuesday. What a lucky break for the Mets… It must be “Two for Tuesday” at the Hospital for Special Surgery… Santana, of course, will have bone chips removed from his left elbow, while Oliver Perez gets his knee repaired. Both pitchers are expected to be healthy and ready by spring training, […]
The Mets have released a statement that the fall instructional league has not been canceled, but only shifted to the the Dominican Republic. Still, it’s a cost cutting maneuver no matter how they wish to present it. They can do all the damage control they want and deny every instance of their obvious cost cutting moves, but it doesn’t change the facts. 1. Traded Billy Wagner for low level AA prospects…………………………………………….Savings $3,400,000.00 2. Announce decision to […]
According to several sources, Scott Kazmir has been traded from the Tampa Bay Rays to the Los Angeles Angels. The Angels acquired Kazmir for minor league left-hander Alex Torres, minor league infielder Matt Sweeney, and a player to be named later. Kazmir, 25, got off to a rough start this season and is 8-7 with a 5.92 earned-run average for the Rays this season. However, the former Mets prospect is 4-2 with a 4.41 ERA in eight […]
In his column Rumblings and Grumblings, Jayson Stark of ESPN raises the specter that Frankie Rodriguez might be concealing an injury. K-Rod not A-OK? Meanwhile, opposing scouts and executives have been buzzing that it wouldn’t shock them if Francisco Rodriguez added to the Mets’ DL total. Clearly, something is up with K-Rod. His first-pitch strike percentage (just 49.4 percent, according to fangraphs.com) is the lowest of any closer in baseball. And it’s been on a […]
