A new weekly feature that will look at the Mets beyond the box score. The Mets find themselves in the same spot as the crosstown Yankees. Both are in second place in their respective divisions, and both teams are 1.5 games out of first place. In the last ten games, Mets starting pitchers have a combined 1.38 ERA to lead the league. It’s the lowest ERA in a 10-game span since Gooden, Viola, Cone, Darling, Whitehurst in 1991. […]
For those of you who didn’t get a chance to watch tonight’s game against the Cubs — you have to watch this amazing catch by Ike Davis diving into the dugout. There wasn’t much to cheer about in tonight’s 9-3 loss to the Cubs, but this play was something to behold. Here it is… Now that’s the way to play first base! Isn’t funny how the two most amazing plays by a first baseman this […]
According to Adam Rubin via Twitter, Mike Jacobs has cleared waivers and could report to Buffalo. Jacobs hit .208 with one homer and two RBIs in 24 at-bats before being designated for assignment Sunday. Jacobs has indicated he would be willing to go to Triple-A Buffalo if playing time exists. It’s not surprising that 29 other MLB teams passed on Jacobs. What was surprising, although not really, was that the Mets signed Jacobs in the first […]
According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, Reds starting pitcher Edinson Volquez has been suspended 50 games for vilating the MLB policy on PED use. It is believed Volquez failed the test during spring training. Major League Baseball confirmed the suspension in a press release and said the suspension will take effect April 21. Volquez was an NL All-Star in 2008, his first year with Cincinnati, and was off to a 4-2 start with a 4.35 ERA […]
According to Matt Cerrone of MetsBlog, Ike Davis will be wearing uniform number 29 when he takes the field for tonight’s Major League debut against the Chicago Cubs at Citi Field. Over the years, the Mets have had many great players who donned number 29, including one of my favorite Mets of all time, Dave Magadan. Other notables include: Danny Frisella, Mickey Lolich, Frank Viola, Masato Yoshii, Octavio Dotel and Steve Trachsel. Oddly enough, Tobi Stoner […]
According to Adam Rubin of ESPN NY, the Mets will try to freshen up a tired and weary bullpen by calling up pitcher Tobi Stoner, who is expected to be promoted from Triple-A Buffalo in time for tonight’s game against the Cardinals which will be broadcast nationally on ESPN. Stoner (0-1, 4.32 ERA) had last pitched Tuesday for the Bisons, so he would be fully rested in case John Maine needs an early bailout. The 25-year-old right-hander had allowed four […]
As posted on MetsBlog, here is a recap of what Jerry Manuel had to say during his interview with Mike Francesa on WFAN. The Mets didn’t do what they needed to do against Livan Hernandez last Sunday, regardless of how Johan Santana pitched, and that was very frustrating. He does not expect Johan Santana to be perfect every time he pitches, and he was disappointed the team couldn’t rally, ‘to pick him up,’ like he […]
Updated 5:30 pm According to Adam Rubin, John Maine will remain in the rotation and make Sunday’s start against the St. Louis Cardinals. Maine matched a career high by allowing eight runs in three innings Tuesday against the Colorado Rockies. That performance lifted Maine’s ERA to 13.50 after two starts. Keep your fingers crossed and hope for the best… Original Post 4/14 12:00 am Only seven games into the season and the house of cards the […]
According to Adam Rubin of ESPN NewYork, third base prospect Shawn Bowman, who had been designated for assignment, has been claimed off waivers by the Toronto Blue Jays. Bowman had a solid season after coming back from injuries last season, batting .294 with nine homers and 44 RBI in 347 at-bats with Double-A Binghamton. Bowman, 25, was originally drafted by the Mets in the 12th round in 2002 out of British Columbia. Rubin also notes that, RHP […]
