National League Wild Card Game
Wednesday, October 5, 2016 • 8:09 p.m.

Citi Field • Flushing, N.Y.
LHP Madison Bumgarner (15-9, 2.74) vs. RHP Noah Syndergaard (14-9, 2.60)
ESPN • WOR 710 AM • ESPN 1050 AM

The Mets and Giants took very different paths to get to tonight’s Wild Card show down in Queens. The Mets, the reigning National League Champions, were hampered by injuries all season that decimated their pitching staff and sidelined a sizable portion the bats. The Giants were running away with the division and then went into a massive slump that led them here. However, they have one of the best pitchers in the game. The Mets can make the same claim and the Mets had to run through some of the best pitchers in the game last year, so let’s dive into tonight’s match-up!

Here is the umpiring crew for the NL Wild Card Game at Citi Field:

HP – Mike Winters (Crew Chief)
1B – Jeff Nelson
2B – Mike Everitt
3B – Jim Wolf
LF – CB Bucknor
RF – Quinn Wolcott

Mets Lineup

  1. Jose Reyes – 3B
  2. Asdrubal Cabrera – SS
  3. Yoenis Cespedes – LF
  4. Curtis Granderson – CF
  5. T.J. Rivera – 2B
  6. Jay Bruce – RF
  7. Rene Rivera – C
  8. James Loney – 1B
  9. Noah Syndergaard – RHP

Giants Lineup

  1. Denard Span – CF
  2. Brandon Belt – 1B
  3. Buster Posey– C
  4. Hunter Pence – RF
  5. Brandon Crawford – SS
  6. Angel Pagan – LF
  7. Joe Panik – 2B
  8. Conor Gillaspie 3B
  9. Madison Bumgarner – LHP

Syndergaard is 14-9 over 31 games and 30 starts this year over 183.2 innings with a 2.60 ERA. His final start of the season was strong as he held the Marlins to 1 ER over 6.0 innings while allowing 5 hits and striking out 8. Way back in May he had a rough start against the Giants on a dreary Sunday allowing 4 ER over 5.2 innings. Near the end of August he dominated the Giants holding them scoreless and to 2 hits over 8.0 innings. The Giants have the following numbers against Noah:

  • Belt 0-6, 3 BB
  • Crawford 2-8
  • Pagan 0-5
  • Panik 2-6
  • Posey 3-6
  • Span 0-6
  • Pence 1-5, HR
  • Blanco 0-3

The Mets bats draw Madison Bumgarner who is 15-9 over 34 starts and 226.2 innings this year with a 2.74 ERA, his best season of his career in terms of ERA (he also finished as season with 4 complete games for the 3rd time in a row). In his last two starts he has allowed 8 ER over 13.1 innings while walking 2 and striking out 10. In his first time against the Mets he allowed no runs and 3 walks over 6.0 innings and at the end of August he allowed 4 ER over 5.0 innings (so basically the reverse of Thor). The Mets have the following numbers against Bumgarner:

  • Bruce 3-23, HR
  • K Johnson 7-20
  • Loney 2-13, 2B
  • Cespedes 3-10, 2B
  • Lagares 1-9
  • Reyes 3-9
  • Cabrera 3-7
  • Rene Rivera 2-3, 2B, HR
  • T.J. Rivera 2-3

RHP Gabriel Ynoa (1-0, 7.90) vs. RHP Jerad Eickhof (11-14, 3.72)
SNY • WOR 710 AM • ESPN 1050 AM

The Mets did it… They have clinched the first NL Wild Card spot and will host the Wild Card Game on Wednesday, October 5 at Citi Field vs. either San Francisco or St. Louis. The Mets also qualified as the Wild Card in 1999 and 2000.

New York has reached the postseason in consecutive years for the second time in team history (also 1999-2000). Terry Collins becomes the third Mets manager in franchise history to lead the team to two postseason appearances, joining Davey Johnson (1986, 1988) and Bobby Valentine (1999, 2000).

The Mets have now won seven of their last nine games and are 18-8 in their last 26 contests. The Mets are 43-37 on the road this year and 14-5 in their last 19 road games. The Mets have a .692 (27-12) winning percentage since August 20, the best percentage in the majors during that span. The Cubs are second (.641, 25-14).

Mets Lineup

  • Herrera 1-2
  • Quinn 1-2

He hasn’t faced the Mets since mid-July where he allowed 2 ER over 5 hits in 6.0 innings. The Mets have the following numbers against Jerad:

The Cardinals and Giants both won on the Mets off day, so the race for the Wild Card just got a little tighter. The Mets still control their destiny though as they head into Philly for the last series of the season.

  1. Jose Reyes – 3B
  2. Asdrubal Cabrera – SS
  3. Yoenis Cespedes – LF
  4. Curtis Granderson – CF

RHP Noah Syndergaard (13-9, 2.63) vs. RHP Tom Koehler (9-12, 4.02)
SNY • WOR 710 AM • ESPN 1050 AM

Last night was extremely emotional night for the Marlins as the Marlins were all introduced as #16 and both teams went out of the dugout for a moment of silence. The Marlins left a spot open for Fernandez and then signed the base of the mound. Then Dee Gordon took a pitch wearing Fernandez’s before going knocking a homer out of the park and breaking down rounding the bases. The Marlins ended the night back on the mound leaving their hats. The Cardinals lost as well and the Giants didn’t play so for the most part the Wild Card Race took a night off, as it should.

The Mets have won three of their last five games and are 14-8 in their last 22 contests. The Mets are 39-37 on the road this year and 10-5 in their last 15 road contests.

Noah Syndergaard enters tonight’s start with 210 strikeouts, the most by a Mets pitcher since R.A. Dickey struck out 230 batters in 2012. In two starts versus Miami this season, Syndergaard has struck out 21 batters in 14.0 innings of work.

The Mets beat the Phillies by an almost incomprehensible 17-0 as the Giants and Cardinals both lost. The Mets look to close in on the Wild Card as they start their last 6 games of the season.

Tonight will be an incredibly tough game in Miami. As you have undoubtedly heard by now, early Sunday morning, phenom pitcher Jose Fernandez passed away in a tragic boating accident. Jose Fernandez transcended pitching and baseball as an ambassador for the sport and demonstrating that baseball is supposed to be fun. His untimely passing has hit the baseball world hard.

  • Franco 1-3
  • Hernandez 1-3
  • Joseph 1-3

The Mets bats will draw a rookie this afternoon in Jake Thompson who is 3-5 over 9 starts and 49.2 innings with a 5.62 ERA. In his last two starts he’s 2-0 over 11.0 innings allowing 10 hits and 5 ER. He’s never faced the Mets before in a major league game.

RHP Alec Asher (1-0, 2.16) vs. LHP Sean Gilmartin (0-0, 4.76)
SNY • WOR 710 AM • ESPN 1050 AM

A day after the epic bat flip, the Mets won again beating the Phillies 10-5 escaping trouble a few times in the game to get another win. The Cardinals and the Giants both lost so the Mets are in sole possession of the top wild card spot, however the Mets are in an interesting place in terms of pitcher usage.

Mets Lineup

  1. Jose Reyes – 3B
  2. Asdrubal Cabrera – SS
  3. Yoenis Cespedes – LF
  4. Curtis Granderson – CF
  5. Kelly Johnson – 2B
  6. Michael Conforto – RF
  7. Lucas Duda – 1B
  8. Travis d’Arnaud – C
  9. Sean Gilmartin – LHP

Phillies Lineup

  1. Cesar Hernandez – 2B
  2. Roman Quinn – RF
  3. Odubel Herrera – CF
  4. Maikel Franco – 3B
  5. Tommy Joseph – 1B
  6. Darin Ruf – LF
  7. Freddy Galvis – SS
  8. Jorge Alfaro – C
  9. Alec Asher – RHP

Originally Noah Syndergaard was going to start tonight, but he has strep throat and won’t be able to go until Monday. So the Mets are going to turn to Sean Gilmartin to make his second start on the season. The Mets have been burning pitchers recently, adding 10 more pitchers used last night, and it is unclear how much they will get out of Gilmartin tonight. On the season he has pitched 13 games with 17.0 innings with a 4.76 ERA. He’s pitched 0.2 innings against the Phillies this year allowing a hit and a walk. The Phillies have the following numbers against Gilmartin:

  • Galvis 2-8
  • Herrera 2-6
  • Howard 0-4
  • Asche 0-4
  • Bourjos 0-2
  • Blanco 1-3
  • Ruf 1-3, HR

Alec Asher gets the nod for the Phillies. He’s 1-0 over his first 3 starts this year with 16.2 innings and a 2.16 ERA. The last time he faced the Mets was last year towards the end of the season, and it wasn’t a good day for him as he allowed 5 ER over 0.2 innings, not making it out of the first inning. The Mets have the following numbers against Alec:

  • Cespedes 0-0, BB
  • Conforto 1-1, HR
  • d’Arnaud 0-1
  • Duda 0-1
  • Granderson 1-1, 2B

RHP Jeremy Hellickson (12-9, 3.57) vs. RHP Gabriel Ynoa (1-0, 9.00)
SNY • WOR 710 AM • ESPN 1050 AM

Last night was great, let’s do that again!

The Mets opened up with an early 2-0 lead before the Phillies eroded it and passed the Mets 3-2. The Mets then tied the game and later took a 4-3 lead before the Phillies hit a 3 run homer off of Reed. Then in the 9th inning, the Mets added two runs on a Reyes homer sending the game into extras. Duda would later come inches away from winning the game but it wouldn’t be his night. The Phillies took a 8-6 lead in the 11th but Cabrera had other ideas in the bottom of the 11th slamming a 3-run homer to give the Mets the win.

Mets Lineup

  1. Jose Reyes – 3B
  2. Asdrubal Cabrera – SS
  3. Yoenis Cespedes – LF
  4. Curtis Granderson – CF
  5. Kelly Johnson – 2B
  6. Michael Conforto – RF
  7. Lucas Duda – 1B
  8. Travis d’Arnaud – C
  9. Gabriel Ynoa – RHP

Phillies Lineup

  1. Cesar Hernandez – 2B
  2. Roman Quinn – RF
  3. Odubel Herrera – CF
  4. Maikel Franco – 3B
  5. Ryan Howard – 1B
  6. Cameron Rupp – C
  7. Freddy Galvis – SS
  8. Cody Asche – LF
  9. Jeremy Hellickson – RHP

Gabriel Ynoa will look to keep the good times going. There were rumors that tonight would be Matz’s return to the rotation but he’s not ready yet, so it’s Ynoa time. He’s 1-0 over seven games and one start with 10.0 innings and a 9.00 ERA. In his first start, he allowed one ER over 4.2 innings while striking out eight Twins. This will be Gabriel’s first time facing the Phillies.

The Mets bats will get a crack at Jeremy Hellickson who is 12-9 over 30 starts and 181.1 innings with a 3.57 ERA. He’s coming off of one of his best starts of the season where he pitched a complete game shutout against the Marlins while allowing only three hits. His last start against the Mets wasn’t so good as he allowed five ER and seven hits over 4.0 innings. The Mets have the following numbers against the Marlins:

  • Granderson 5-27, 2 2B, HR
  • Reyes 10-27, 2B, HR
  • Cabrera 7-18, 2B,HR
  • De Aza 4-18, 3 2B

Thursday, September 22, 2016 • 7:10 p.m.
Citi Field • Flushing, N.Y.
LHP Adam Morgan (2-10, 5.57) vs. RHP Seth Lugo (4-2, 2.35)
SNY • WOR 710 AM • ESPN 1050 AM

The Mets start their last regular season home series of the year as they welcome the Phillies and hope to forget about everything that happened over the last three games vs Atlanta. Last night the Mets had the lead earlier, let it slip in the later innings and then got robbed of a walk-off win at the end of the game. Luckily, the Cardinals and the Giants also lost, so the Mets are still in a three-way tie for the Wild Card.

The Mets have won 12 of their last 14 series vs. the Phillies and are 21-10 vs. Philadelphia since the start of the 2015 campaign. The Mets are 13-5 vs. the Phillies in their last 18 games at Citi Field.

Jay Bruce is out of the starting lineup for the fourth time in five games, while T.J. Rivera bats cleanup and Eric Campbell gets the start at first base.

Mets Lineup

  1. Jose Reyes – 3B
  2. Asdrubal Cabrera – SS
  3. Yoenis Cespedes – LF
  4. T.J. Rivera – 2B
  5. Curtis Granderson – RF
  6. Eric Campbell – 1B
  7. Rene Rivera – C
  8. Alejandro De Aza – CF
  9. Seth Lugo – RHP

Phillies Lineup

  1. Cesar Hernandez – 2B
  2. Roman Quinn – LF
  3. Odubel Herrera – CF
  4. Maikel Franco – 3B
  5. Ryan Howard – 1B
  6. Cameron Rupp – C
  7. Freddy Galvis – SS
  8. Aaron Altherr – RF
  9. Adam Morgan – LHP

Tonight, Seth Lugo looks to get the job done for the Mets. On the season he is 4-2 over 15 games and 6 starts with 53.2 innings of work and a 2.35 ERA. He is 4-0 in his last 5 starts and 30.0 innings of work with an 1.80 ERA. Seth has never faced the Phillies before or anyone on their roster, but will probably face them again before the season is over (if you didn’t know, 7 of the Mets last 10 games are against the Phillies).

The Mets bats draw Adam Morgan who is 2-10 over 21 games and 19 starts and 103.1 innings of work with a 5.57 ERA.  In his last 4 starts though he has been considerably better than his season numbers posting a 2.35 ERA over 23.0 innings. However the start right before this good streak was against the Mets where he allowed 6 ER over 5.0 innings. The Mets have the following numbers against Morgan:

  • Bruce 1-4, 2B
  • Cespedes 2-5
  • Flores 2-5, 2 HR
  • d’Arnaud 1-3, HR
  • Cabrera 1-3, HR
  • Reyes 2-3, 2B, HR
  • Lagares 1-2, HR

New York is 9-8 versus the Braves this season. With one more victory, the Mets will have double-digit wins against Atlanta in three consecutive seasons for the first time in team history.

The Mets go for the sweep of the Twins today as Gabriel Ynoa makes his first major league start. With the Cardinals beating the Giants last night at about the same time, the Mets now have a two game lead in the chase against the Cardinals and tied for the first spot with the Giants. Citi Field • Flushing, N.Y.
RHP Ervin Santana (7-10, 3.53) vs. RHP Seth Lugo (4-2, 2.40)
PIX11 • WOR 710 AM • ESPN 1050 AM

The Mets beat the Twins last night behind an amazing start from Bartolo Colon and back to back jacks by Reyes and Cabrera. Meanwhile, the two teams on the Mets radar for the Wild Card, the Giants and Cardinals, are playing each other. Tonight the Mets look to keep it going behind Seth Lugo.

Mets Lineup

  1. Jose Reyes – 3B
  2. Asdrubal Cabrera – SS
  3. Yoenis Cespedes – LF
  4. Curtis Granderson – CF
  5. Jay Bruce – RF
  6. T.J. Rivera – 2B
  7. James Loney – 1B
  8. Rene Rivera – C
  9. Seth Lugo – RHP

Twins Lineup

  1. Brian Dozier – 2B
  2. Joe Mauer – 1B
  3. Jorge Polanco – SS
  4. Max Kepler – RF
  5. Eduardo Escobar – 3B
  6. Eddie Rosario – LF
  7. Byron Buxton – CF
  8. Juan Centeno – C
  9. Ervin Santana – RHP

Seth Lugo is 4-2 over 14 games and 5 starts and 48.2 innings with a 2.40 ERA. In his last four starts he has tossed 25.0 innings with a 4-0 record and a 1.80 ERA. The Mets need another, now typical, Lugo start tonight as they look to capitalize on the Giants playing the Cardinals. As a rookie in the National League East, it is not surprising that he has not faced the Twins yet in his major league career or anyone on the Twins roster in a major league game.

The Mets bats will get a look at Ervin Santana who is 7-10 over 27 games and 163.1 innings with an ERA of 3.53. He’s had a mostly solid month of September allowing 6 ER over 16.0 innings with an ERA of 3.38. He faced the Mets 4 times in 2014 as a member of the Braves where he allowed 10 ER and 21 hits over 27.0 innings (3.33 ERA). The Mets have the following numbers against Santana:

  • Granderson 13-51, 2 2B, 5 HR
  • Cabrera 9-41, 2 2B, 2 3B, HR
  • Loney 7-18, 3 2B
  • K Johnson 1-13, HR
  • De Aza 4-16, 2B, HR
  • Cespedes 4-14, 3 HR
  • d’Arnaud 2-9, HR

Last night wasn’t great for the Mets, but it also wasn’t great for the Cardinals so the Mets maintain their wild card spot. Tonight Noah Syndergaard looks to put the Mets back in the win column as they continue their (now less than) three week race to close out the season.

Mets Lineup

  1. Jose Reyes – 3B
  2. Asdrubal Cabrera – SS
  3. Yoenis Cespedes – LF
  4. Curtis Granderson – CF
  5. Jay Bruce – RF
  6. TJ Rivera – 2B
  7. James Loney – 1B
  8. Rene Rivera – C

However, things haven’t been the greatest against the Nationals this year as he is 1-3 in as many starts allowing 19 hits and 10 runs over 21.2 innings of work. The Mets offense took off yesterday as the Amazin’s took back the wild card in their last game ever at Turner Field. Now the Mets look to most difficult on paper three games left of their schedule against the Nationals. The offense yesterday was mostly courtesy of Cespedes’ 30th homer of the season, a grand slam, plus the Mets got an outstanding start from Seth Lugo.

Mets Lineup

  1. Jose Reyes – 3B
  2. Asdrubal Cabrera – SS
  3. Yoenis Cespedes – LF
  4. Curtis Granderson – CF
  5. Kelly Johnson – 2B
  6. Jay Bruce – RF
  7. Travis d’Arnaud – C
  8. James Loney – 1B
  9. Rafael Montero – RHP

Nationals Lineup

His last time out he allowed three ER over 4.1 innings with 4 four walks against the Reds, in a game the Mets eventually won 5-3. Against the Nationals last year he allowed one hit and no runs in 2.0 innings of work. The Nationals have the following numbers against Montero:

RHP Seth Lugo (3-2, 2.38) vs. RHP Williams Perez (2-2, 5.47)
SNY • WOR 710 AM • ESPN 1050 AM

The Mets lost in extra innings last night and the Cardinals gained ground and retook that second wild card spot. But that’s why this is a race! It won’t be a smooth last three weeks of the season, it never is. For some reason, the only team that former Met John Gant can dominate, is the New York Mets. Anyway, the Mets look to put everything back together in today’s series finale.

Mets Lineup

  1. Jose Reyes – 3B
  2. Asdrubal Cabrera – SS
  3. Yoenis Cespedes – LF
  4. Curtis Granderson – RF
  5. Kelly Johnson – 2B
  6. Alejandro De Aza – CF
  7. James Loney – 1B
  8. Rene Rivera – C
  9. Seth Lugo – RHP

Braves Lineup

  1. Ender Inciarte – CF
  2. Adonis Garcia – 3B
  3. Freddie Freeman – 1B
  4. Matt Kemp – LF
  5. Nick Markakis – RF
  6. Anthony Recker – C
  7. Dansby Swanson – SS
  8. Gordon Beckham – 2B
  9. Williams Perez – RHP

Today it is on Seth Lugo to keep pushing in the right direction. He’s 3-2 over 13 games and 4 starts with an ERA of 2.38. He’s 3-0 in his last three starts and has pitched 18.0 innings with a 1.50 ERA while striking out 13. This will be his first start against the Braves and his first time facing anyone on the Braves roster.

The Mets will have to deal with Williams Perez who is 2-2 over 10 starts and 51.0 innings and a 5.47 ERA. When he came back to the majors in September, he struggled in 2.1 innings allowing 8 hits and 6 ER. Last year against the Mets he was 1-0 in 4 games and 3 starts while pitching 19.0 innings with a 4.26 ERA. The Mets have the following numbers against Perez:

  • d’Arnaud 6-9, HR
  • Granderson3-9, HR
  • Cespedes 1-6, 3B
