The end is near. This afternoon at Citi Field the New York Mets will play their final game of the season, a rubber match against the Houston Astros. The veteran Bartolo Colon (14-13, 4.08) will close out the 2014 campaign for the Mets and he’ll be opposed by Astros right-hander Nick Tropeano (1-2, 3.78) in a 1:10 PM start.

The Mets (78-83) enter the final day of the season tied with the Atlanta Braves for second place in the NL East, and one game ahead of the fourth place Miami Marlins.

Colon is just 3.2 innings shy of reaching the 200-inning plateau for the Mets. The last time he tossed 200 innings was in 2005, when he went 21-8 and won the American League Cy Young Award for the Los Angeles Angels.

Bobby Abreu is expected to be in the lineup for what will be his final start as a major leaguer. On Friday, the 40-year-old veteran outfielder announced that he would retire after this season. “I feel happy with my career,” he said. “I’m blessed. We all create goals in our lives. And to me, as a baseball player, I created all my goals and I met all those goals.”

After hitting a dramatic walk-off home run on Saturday night, Lucas Duda is just one more longball away from a 30-homer season. He’s also two runs batted in away from a 90 RBI season.

No matter what happens today, the Mets will not have a protected draft pick in 2015. That means they will forfeit their first-round selection next June if they sign a free agent who receives a qualifying offer from his former team.

Starting Lineup

  1. Matt den Dekker – LF
  2. Bobby Abreu – RF
  3. Daniel Murphy – 3B
  4. Lucas Duda – 1B
  5. Curtis Granderson – CF
  6. Wilmer Flores – 2B
  7. Ruben Tejada – SS
  8. Juan Centeno – C
  9. Bartolo Colon – RHP

The Mets and Astros button up the jerseys for one more time this season as they look to turn the lights out on the 2014 season. Last night, the Mets won thanks to a walk-off homer from Lucas Duda, his 29th of the season, and today they look to win 79 games in a season for the first time since 2010. Today Bartolo Colon takes the mound as he squares off against Nick Tropeano.

Bartolo Colon is 14-13 over 30 games this season pitching 196.1 innings with a 4.08 ERA. Colon is going to have to bounce back from a poor start in Washington where he allowed 4 ER over 6.0 innings. Last year he pitched against Houston four times allowing 3 earned over 6, none over 7, 5 over 4 and 1 over 6. The Astros have the following numbers against Colon:

  • Altuve 5-14, 2B
  • Dominguez 2-12, 2B
  • Castro 6-9, HR
  • Carter 1-10, 2B
  • Villar 1-5

Nick Tropeano gets the fourth start of his rookie season. He is coming off of the worst start of his brief career, allowing 4 ER over 6.2 innings. He has not faced the Mets in a major league game and has never faced any current Mets players.

This is my last game preview of the year. It’s been a pleasure writing these for you. I’ll be back again in the Spring when I begin my 8th season with the best group of Mets writers on the web – Metsmerized!

The Mets continue their final series of the year on Sunday against the Astros at Citi Field. Rookie righthander Rafael Montero (1-3, 4.38) will take the mound for the Mets and he’ll oppose Samuel Deduno (2-6, 4.66) for the Astros. First pitch is at 7:10 PM.

Montero is making his eighth major league start. He earned his first major league win in his last start on September 10 vs. Colorado when he tossed 5.1 shutout innings, allowed three hits and four walks and notched seven strikeouts. Over his last two starts, Montero has fanned 13 and allowed one run in 12.2 innings.

Travis d’Arnaud will undergo surgery early next week to remove a bone spur from his right elbow. He finished the year with 13 home runs, the most by a rookie catcher in team history and currently the most among NL rookies this season. Only two Mets have led NL rookies in home runs (Darryl Strawberry with 26 in 1983 and Ron Swoboda with 19 in 1965).

The Mets will begin the 2015 regular season on April 6 at Washington. The Home Opener is Monday, April 13 vs. the Phillies. The 2015 schedule also features the Subway Series returning to weekend matchups on April 24-26 at Yankee Stadium and at Citi Field September 18-20. The Boston Red Sox are set to make their first-ever regular season visit to Citi Field for a weekend matchup, August 28-30.

In the first year of Major League Baseball’s instant replay review system, the Mets have challenged 31 calls and have been successful on 14 of them. Overall, the Mets have been involved in 59 plays that have gone to instant replay with 30 of those calls being overturned.

Starting Lineup

  1. Matt den Dekker, cf
  2. Eric Young Jr., lf
  3. Daniel Murphy, 3b
  4. Lucas Duda, 1b
  5. Curtis Granderson, rf
  6. Wilmer Flores, 2b
  7. Anthony Recker, c
  8. Ruben Tejada, SS
  9. Rafael Montero, rhp

The Mets dropped the opener of the last series of the season last night, and they look to bounce back tonight as they play the Astros in game two. Niese left early and the Mets struggled to push runs across the plate as they lost by a score of 3-1, the lone run coming from a Grandy shot. Tonight they look to get back on it with Montero on the mound and Deduno starting for the ‘stros.

Rafael Montero is 1-3 this season over 9 games and 7 starts posting a 4.38 ERA in 39.0 innings of work. He has had a good month of September so far making a start and an appearance totaling to 6.1 innings, no runs, 4 hits, 5 walks and 8 strikeouts. He has never faced the Astros in his major league career and he has never faced anyone on the Astros’ roster.

The Mets draw Sam Deduno who is 2-6 this season over 96.2 innings with a 4.66 ERA. In four games for the Astros this year, in no starts, he is 0-1 over 4.2 innings with a 5.79 ERA. He has never faced the Mets in a major league game before but he has faced one batter on the Mets roster, Curtis Granderson, who is 0-1 against Deduno.

The Mets (77-82) open their final series of the season on Friday night against the Houston Astros (69-90) at Citi Field. Jon Niese (9-11, 3.50) will get the start for the Mets and he’ll be opposed by Brad Peacock (4-9, 4.82) for the Astros in a 7:10 PM matchup.

Niese will make his 30th start tonight, tying his career-high. He also started 30 games in 2010 and 2012. Niese has gone 22 consecutive starts allowing three earned runs or less at home, tied with Johan Santana (April 29, 2008-May 27, 2009) for the longest such streak in team history.

Houston entered the National League in 1962 with the Mets as the Colt 45s before moving to the American League West in 2013. The Mets are 258-308 all-time vs. Houston. This is the first time the two clubs are meeting since the Astros moved to the AL.

Bobby Abreu is expected to formally announce his retirement tonight according to the Daily News. The Mets have had no discussion with him remaining with the organization in a coaching capacity.

Eric Young, Jr. swiped his 30th base in the first game of yesterday’s doubleheader and now ranks sixth in the National League in stolen bases. Young had 38 stolen bases with New York last year.

Curtis Granderson is 10-for-his-last-21 (.476) while hitting in six straight games. Granderson is hitting .329 (25-76) with 13 runs scored, seven doubles, one triple, three home runs and 16 RBI this month. His 16 RBI are tied for the second-most in the NL this month, he is also 12th with a .329 batting average, tied for third in doubles (7) and tied for second with 11 extra-base hits.

Wilmer Flores has scored 14 runs this month, collected five doubles, one triple, four home runs and driven in 13 runs in 20 games in September. Flores is tied for seventh in the NL with his four home runs this month, tied for 11th in RBI and runs scored and tied for ninth with 10 extra-base hits in September.

Starting Lineup

  1. Eric Young Jr. – LF
  2. Wilmer Flores – 2B
  3. Daniel Murphy – 3B
  4. Lucas Duda – 1B
  5. Curtis Granderson – RF
  6. Matt den Dekker – CF
  7. Anthony Recker – C
  8. Ruben Tejada – SS
  9. Jon Niese – LHP

The Mets split the double header last night which locked in another losing season for the Amazins, but they still have a chance to finish with 80 wins on the season if they sweep the last series at home against the Houston Astros. Tonight Jon Niese will be on the hill as he takes on Brad Peacock as both teams try to finish their 2014 campaigns with dignity heading into the off-season.

Jon Niese is 9-11 over 29 starts and 182.1 innings with a 3.50 ERA heading into his final start of the season. In his last three starts he is 1-1 over 21.0 innings with a 2.14 ERA while striking out 19 batters. In his career he has made five starts against the Astros with a 1-3 record and a 3.60 ERA. The Astros have the following numbers against Niese:

  • Guzman 2-9
  • Fowler 1-9
  • Altuve 1-5
  • Gonzalez 0-4
  • Castro 0-3

The Mets bats will get a look at Brad Peacock tonight who is 4-9 this season over 27 games, 23 starts and 127.0 innings of work while posting a 4.82 ERA. He is coming off of a statistically interesting start where he pitched 3.1 innings allowed 6 hits and 2 earned runs and thanks to the defense, 7 total runs. He is also 1-0 in one career start against the Amazin’s where he allowed no runs and two hits over 5.0 innings. The Mets have the following limited numbers against him:

  • Tejada 1-3
  • Duda 0-1
  • Satin 0-2

This afternoon the Mets look to even up their series against the Nationals in the first game of a split doubleheader. Dillon Gee (7-8, 3.88) will make his final start of 2014 against Gio Gonzalez (9-10, 3.74). First pitch is scheduled for 1:05pm.

Gee received his first career loss against the Marlins in the Mets’ 4-3 defeat on September 17th at Citi Field. He pitched 6.2 innings, allowing seven hits and four runs, striking out four and walking two.

With recent September collapses still fresh in our minds, the Mets are 12-8 this month. The last time New York finished with a winning record in September was 2008 (13-12). The pitching staff has posted a 3.10 ERA, ranking fourth in the NL this month.

Travis d’Arnaud will get today’s game off as he battles various ailments. He collected his third triple of the season Tuesday night. The three triples are tied for the second-most in team history by a catcher in a single season. The last Mets catcher to do it was John Stearns in 1982.

Gee has compiled 45 straight starts of 5.0 innings or more, dating back to May 19th, 2013, the longest active streak in the majors. Gee’s streak is the fifth-longest streak in Mets history.

  1. Matt den Dekker, LF
  2. Wilmer Flores, 2B
  3. Daniel Murphy, 3B
  4. Lucas Duda, 1B
  5. Curtis Granderson, RF
  6. Kirk Nieuwenhuis, CF
  7. Ruben Tejada, SS
  8. Juan Centeno, C
  9. Dillon Gee, RHP

The Mets were rained out last night in DC so they’ll play two today in the Nation’s capital in a Day / Night doubleheader. The first game will feature Dillon Gee, the scheduled start for the Mets last night. Dillon is 7-8 over 21 games this season and 132.1 innings with a 3.88 ERA. In his last start he allowed 7 ER over 12.0 innings while striking out 8. In three starts this year against the Nationals he has struggled allowing 11 ER over 18.0 innings. The Nationals have the following numbers against Gee:

  • Desmond 10-40, 3 HR
  • Werth 11-37, 3 2B, HR
  • Zimmerman 7-32, 2B
  • LaRoche 7-29, 2B, 3 HR
  • Span 6-28, 2 2B, HR

The Nationals will now send out rookie Blake Treinen in the first game who has started 6 games this season (and in his career), and 14 total with a 2-3 record, 1.94 ERA and 46.1 innings of work. He is coming off of a start in Atlanta where he shutout the Braves over 5.0 innings and hasn’t allowed a run since August 5th (he also wasn’t in a major league game from the 5th to September 3rd). He has logged 2.0 innings against the Mets in that most recent outing that he was scored on. The Mets have the following numbers against Blake:

  • d’Arnaud 0-0, HBP
  • Duda 0-1
  • Lagares 0-1
  • Murphy 1-1
  • Tejada 0-1

In the second game of the day, the Mets will send out Zack Wheeler who is 11-10 this year over 31 games and 180.1 innings with a 3.49 ERA. After a terrible start against the Nationals where he allowed 7 hits and 6 ER over 4.0 innings, he shut out the Braves over 6.0 innings while striking out 7 batters. He is 1-3 over 4 starts against the Nationals this year posting a 5.96 ERA while pitching 22.2 innings and striking out 22 batters. The Nationals have the following numbers against Wheeler:

  • Span 8-20, 2 2B

  • Desmond 5-17, 2B, HR
  • LaRoche 2-13, HR
  • Rendon 6-14
  • Harper 3-13, HR

In the night cap, the Nationals will send out Gio Gonzalez, the scheduled starter for last night’s game.

Gio Gonzalez is 9-10 over 26 games and 151.2 innings with a 3.74 ERA. In his last two starts he has allowed 6 runs, 5 earned, in 13.2 innings. The Nationals come in having won 13 of 16 games against the Mets. The pitching match-up pits  Bartolo Colon (14-12, 4.02), in what could be his final start for the Mets, against Tanner Roark (14-10, 2.85).

In his last start, Colon received the win in the Mets’ 9-1 victory against the Marlins on September 16th at Citi Field. He tossed 7.2 innings, allowed one earned run on a season-high 12 hits, stricking out seven and walking no one in the 109-pitch effort.

Wilmer Flores has scored 10 runs this month, collecting four doubles, one triple, four home runs and driving in 12 runs in 18 games in September. Flores is tied for fourth in the NL with four home runs this month.

The Mets start their last road series of the 2014 season tonight against the Nationals. A team that has given the Mets some difficulties, the Nationals now stand between the Mets and an improbable last week of the season where the Mets mathematically can still finish at .500 and in second place. The Mets find themselves in this position thanks to a sweep in Atlanta, which is still shocking to me. Tonight Bartolo Colon gets the start as he goes against Tanner Roark.

Bartolo Colon is 14-12 this season with a 4.02 ERA over 29 starts and 190.1 innings. His last start against the Nationals was awful, but he rebounded nicely against Miami allowing 1 ER over 7.2 innings while striking out 7. Overall in the season he is 1-3 against the Nationals this year with a 4.13 ERA over 24.0 innings, which is great considering last time he allowed 5 ER over 3.0 innings against them. The Nationals have put up the following numbers against Colon:

  • Span 1-13
  • Cabrera 1-11, 2B
  • Rendon 4-13, HR
  • Desmond 4-10, 2 HR
  • LaRoche 4-9, 2 2B, HR
  • Werth 4-7, 2 2B
  • Harper 1-7

Tanner Roark is 14-10 in his second major league season with a 2.85 ERA over 30 starts and 192.1 innings of work. In his last two starts he has pitched 13.1 innings and only allowed 2 ER while striking out 5. Against the Mets this year he is 3-0 over three starts and 17.1 innings with a 3.12 ERA. The Mets have the following numbers against him:

  • Murphy 3-12, 2B
  • E Young 4-13, 2B
  • Duda 4-12, 2B
  • Lagares 1-8, 2B
  • Granderson 2-7, 2 2B
  • Tejada 1-7

The Mets will look to complete a sweep of their three-game series against the Atlanta Braves on Sunday at Turner Field, something they haven’t done since since 2007. Jacob deGrom (8-6, 2.68) will get the starting assignment for the Mets while the Braves counter with RHP Ervin Santana (14-9, 3.74) in a 1:35 PM matchup.

In his last start, deGrom tied the modern-era major league record with eight consecutive strikeouts on September 15 against the  Miami Marlins, tying Jim Deshaies of the Houston Astros who set the mark in 1986 against the Dodgers.

DeGrom  established a rookie franchise record hurling 67.1 innings without allowing a home run earlier this year and has surrendered two home runs over his last 16 starts spanning 103.1 innings. he leads all NL rookies in strikeouts (134) and ERA (2.68) and is second with eight wins.

Second baseman Dilson Herrera went 2-for-3 and hit a two-run homer in the second inning last night, but came up lame in the sixth while legging out a single and left the game with what the team is calling a right quad strain.

Daniel Murphy will continue to start at third base while Herrera is out, while Wilmer Flores will shift to second base and Ruben Tejada starts at shortstop, Terry Collins told reporters on Saturday.

Rafael Montero will get another start during the team’s final series of the season against the Houston Astros at Citi Field. Montero tossed 5.1 scoreless innings against the Rockies in his last start on September 10. He is 1-3 with a 4.30 ERA in seven starts and two relief appearances.

Lucas Duda is third in the NL with a career-high 28 home runs and is tied for second in the NL and fifth in the majors with 14 home runs since the All-Star break. Duda extended his career-high with 86 RBI which is tied for ninth in the NL. He leads the team with 11 game-winning RBIs.

Jenrry Mejia has converted nine straight saves including last night and is 27-for-30 in save chances since moving to the bullpen on May 12. He is tied for first in the NL and  ranks third in the majors with 17 saves since the All-Star break.

Wilmer Flores currently has a career high seven-game hitting streak, going 11-28 (.393) with three home runs and 10 RBI. He is hitting .266 (17-64) with 10 runs scored, four doubles, one triple, four home runs and 12 RBI in 16 games this month. Flores is tied for fourth in the NL with his four home runs this month, ranks ninth in RBIs and is tied for sixth with nine extra-base hits in September.

Starting Lineup

  1. Matt den Dekker – LF
  2. Wilmer Flores - 2B
  3. Daniel Murphy – 3B
  4. Lucas Duda – 1B
  5. Curtis Granderson – RF

  9. Jacob deGrom – RHP

The Mets do not have much wiggle room for the last week of the season if they want to finish at .500 and so far they’ve been handling that fact well in Atlanta taking the first two games of the season. Yesterday they got a strong start from Jon Niese and some power from Dilson Herrera and Curtis Granderson. Today they look to complete the sweep behind Jacob deGrom as he squares off against Ervin Santana.

Jacob deGrom is 8-6 over 21 games and 134.1 innings this year with a 2.68 ERA. His last start of 3 ER over 7 innings doesn’t show that he struck out the first 8 batters in the game, tying a major league record. On the season, he has 134 K’s. In two starts against the Braves this season he has allowed 3 ER over 12.0 innings with a 2.25 ERA and 19 K’s. The Braves have the following numbers against deGrom:

  • Freeman, 1-5
  • Heyward 3-6
  • Simmons 1-5
  • BJ Upton 3-5
  • J Upton 1-6, 4 K’s
  • Bethancourt 0-5, 3 K’s

The Mets bats will get another look at Ervin Santana who is wrapping up his first campaign with the Braves. On the season he is 14-9 over 29 games and 185.1 innings with a 3.74 ERA. After back to back poor starts to open up September allowing 10 runs, 9 earned over 11.0 innings in his last outing he allowed only 2 ER over 6.0 innings. He is 2-1 over 3 games against the Mets with a 2.05 ERA over 22.0 innings, 15 hits and 5 ER. The Mets have the following numbers against Braves:

  • Granderson 12-49, 2 2B, 5 HR
  • Abreu 4-16
  • Murphy 5-12, 2 2B
  • E Young 3-9
  • d’Arnaud 2-9, 2B

The Mets continue their final series of the season with the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field on Saturday at 7:10 PM. Jon Niese (8-11, 3.55 ERA) will start for the Mets and will oppose LHP Mike Minor (6-11, 4.74) for the Braves.

At 74-80, Mets need to go 7-1 the rest of the way to reach .500. Otherwise, they will produce their sixth straight losing season, which would match the Houston Astros for the longest active streak of losing seasons in the majors.

Juan Lagares is not making the trip to Atlanta and D.C. because of his right elbow sprain. There’s a chance he may still appear during the season’s final series against the Astros at Citi Field. But it’s likely he probably will not appear again this season.

Starting Lineup

  1. Eric Young, Jr. – LF
  2. Daniel Murphy – 3B
  3. Travis d’Arnaud – C
  4. Lucas Duda – 1B
  5. Wilmer Flores – SS
  6. Curtis Granderson – CF
  7. Eric Campbell – RF
  8. Dilson Herrera – 2B
  9. Jon Niese – LHP

The Mets can still keep the dream alive tonight of reaching .500 at the end of the season. Last night they won the series opener 5-0 and while they were still eliminated from the Wild Card chase, they now need to go 7-1 for the rest of the season to reach mediocrity. Last night also saw Duda hit his 28th homer of the season, giving him 8 more games to try and reach 30!

Jon Niese gets the start tonight, on the season he is 8-11 over 28 games, 175.0 innings with a 3.55 ERA. He only made one mistake in his last outing, a pitch that turned into a two run homer in the 7th inning, but that was enough for the Nationals who eventually won 3-0. Overall in his last two starts he has allowed 3 ER over 13.2 innings. He has allowed 4 ER over 13.0 innings against the Braves in 2014, but still has found himself at 0-2 against them. The Braves have the following numbers vs Jon:

  • Freeman 1-=34, 2 2B, 2 HR
  • Heyward 9-28, 2 2B, 2 HR
  • J Upton 9-20, 2B
  • C Johnson 6-18, 2 2B
  • Simmons 5-15, 2B
  • Laird 5-10, 2 2B
  • BJ Upton 1-9, 5 K’s

The Mets bats will get yet another look at Mike Minor, who is 6-11 this season year 144.1 innings, 24 starts with a 4.74 ERA. He is coming off a rough start against Texas where he allowed 5 ER and 8 hits over 4.2 innings, which ended a streak of 6 good starts that saw him pitch 41.2 innings with a 2.59 ERA. He is 1-0 in three starts against the Mets this year posting a 3.44 ERA over 18.1 innings. The Mets have the following numbers against him:

  • Tejada 8-24, 2 2B
  • Duda 7-22, 2B, HR
  • Murphy 3-21, 2 2B, HR
  • Granderson 4-15, HR
  • Lagares 4-14, 2B
  • d’Arnaud 2-8, 2 2B

Anthony Recker has six home runs to go along with Travis d’Arnaud’s 13 blasts. The Mets are one of six teams with 20 or more home runs from their catchers.

Jeurys Familia leads the team with 19 holds, the most in team history by a rookie. He is tied for second in the majors with 12 holds since the All-Star break.

Eric Young Jr. is 5-7 (.714) in consecutive starts the last two nights. He is tied for fifth in the NL with 29 stolen bases.

In his last three starts he is 2-1 over 19.2 innings with a 3.20 ERA while striking out 14. In two starts against the Nationals this year he allowed 8 ER over 12.2 innings. Righty Tanner Roark (12-10, 2.97) will oppose Bartolo Colon (13-11, 3.96) with first pitch at 7:10pm.

In his last start Colon received the win in the Mets’ 14-5 victory against the Reds on September 5th at Great American Ball Park. He tossed 7.0 innings, allowed two runs, on seven hits and struck out two in an 85-pitch effort.

The Mets posted back-to-back 2-0 shutouts over the Rockies on Tuesday and Wednesday. The last time the Mets had consecutive shutouts was June 29th and 30th, 2012 against the Dodgers. Mets pitchers have tossed 19.0 scoreless innings dating back to Monday.

Jenrry Mejia earned his 25th save last night with a scoreless inning. Mejia is the 10th pitcher in team history with 25 or more saves and is the youngest (age 24) to do so. He is also tied for first in the NL with 15 saves since the All-Star break.

Jefferson Crowther will throw out tonight’s ceremonial first pitch. Crowther’s son, Welles, saved numerous lives on 9-11, including carrying a woman on his back down 17 floors of the South Tower. Welles went back up and helped escort numerous other people down to safety and was recognized by his famous trademark red bandanna that Jefferson gave him as a youngster. A former BC lacrosse star, Welles, died a true hero while saving countless lives.

2. Juan Lagares CF
3. Daniel Murphy 3B

The Mets enter a critical four game game series tonight with the Nationals if they want to make it to .500 or better by the end of the season. Last night the Mets completed the sweep against the Rockies and put themselves only 4 games away from the .500 mark. Bartolo Colon will look to make this happen for the Amazin’s as he squares off against Tanner Roark.

Bartolo Colon is 13-11 over 27 starts and 179.2 innings with a 3.96 ERA. Colon rebounded after his poor start against Philly by pitching 7.0 innings allowing 2 ER in his last start. He is 1-2 over three starts against the Nationals this year allowing 7 runs, 6 earned over 21.0 innings with a 2.57 ERA. The Nationals have the following numbers against Colon:

  • Span 0-10
  • Cabrera 1-11, 2B
  • Rendon 2-10
  • Desmond 4-9, 2 HR
  • LaRoche 2-7, 2 2B

In his last start, Montero took the no-decision in the Mets’ 2-1 defeat to the Cubs back on August 17th at Citi Field. He tossed a career-high 7.1 innings, allowing five hits, one earned run and added six strikeouts.

Travis d’Arnaud leads the Mets with a .394 slugging percentage in the second-half, which ranks 10th in the NL (minimum 150 at-bats).

Dilson Herrera returns to the lineup at second base as Daniel Murphy slides over to third in place of the injured David Wright.

Juan Lagares has hit in nine straight games going 13-39 (.333) and has at least one hit in 15 of his last 17 games, going 23-68 (.338). He has six multi-hit games over that span with two home runs and 11 RBI.

Starting Lineup

1. Juan Lagares – CF
2. Wilmer Flores – SS
3. Daniel Murphy – 3B
4. Travis d’Arnaud – C
5. Eric Campbell – 1B
6. Curtis Granderson – RF
7. Dilson Herrera – 2B
8. Eric Young Jr. – LF
9. Rafael Montero – P

The Mets go for the sweep tonight against the Rockies. Last night the Mets got another masterful performance out of Jacob deGrom who pitched 8 shut out innings. Things got dicey in the top of the ninth as the Rockies loaded the bases with 1 out, but the Mets were able to close the door and now Montero looks to lock that door shut against Tyler Matzek.

Rafael Montero is 0-3 over 7 games and 6 starts in his rookie season. He has pitched 32.2 innings with a 5.23 ERA. His last start on August 17th was one of his better starts as he allowed 1 ER over 7.1 innings of work while striking out 6. Overall in the minors this year he has a 3.45 ERA over 86.0 innings of work. He has never faced the Rockies before in a major league game and has never faced anyone on their roster in a major league game.

For the second straight night in a row, the Mets bats will also get to look at a rookie tonight in Tyler Matzek. Overall on the season he is 5-9 over 17 games, 16 starts with 100.0 innings with a 4.32 ERA. He is coming off the best start in his career where he pitched a complete game shutout against the Padres. In total in his last three starts he has pitched 23.0 innings and 2 ER. He has never faced the Mets before in a major league game and has never faced anyone on the Mets roster in a major league game.

Another game of rookie vs rookie! Lets Go Mets!

The Mets will send Rookie of the Year hopeful Jacob deGrom (7-6, 2.79) to the hill against righty Christian Bergman (2-2, 5.23). First pitch is at 7:10pm.

In his last start, deGrom received a no-decision in a 4-3 win against the Miami Marlins at Marlins Park on September 3rd. He pitched 6.0 innings, allowing five hits and one unearned run. deGrom walked two while striking out six in the 114-pitch effort.

Over his last 12 starts, deGrom has gone 7-2 with a 1.95 ERA, issuing just 21 walks and striking out 78 dating back to June 21st. He ranks fourth in the majors in ERA since that date with only Clayton Kershaw (1.19), Corey Kluber (1.61) and Jon Lester (1.83) pitching to a lower mark.

Last night was the first time in team history the Mets had five or more hits in a game with no singles (four doubles and two triples). We’ll call that the oddest stat of the week.

Starting Lineup

  1. Juan Lagares, cf
  2. Daniel Murphy, 2b
  3. Eric Campbell, 3b
  4. Lucas Duda, 1b
  5. Travis d’Arnaud, c
  6. Curtis Granderson, rf
  7. Wilmer Flores, ss
  8. Matt den Dekker, lf
  9. Jacob deGrom, rhp

The Mets walked off winners last night after a good start from Niese and very late, but not too late, hitting from Flores as the Mets continue a late season push to the .500 mark. Jacob deGrom gets the start tonight. On the season he is 7-6 over 19 games and 119.1 innings with a 2.79 ERA. In his last two starts he has allowed 2 runs, none earned over 13.0 innings. Jacob missed the Rockies the last time the Mets played him this year, and he has never faced the club in his career (since this is his first year in the league). He has also never faced anyone on the Rockies roster in a major league game before.

Christian Bergman is starting for the Rockies with a 2-2 record over 6 career games. In that stretch he has pitched 32.2 innings with a 5.23 ERA. Since he was called up at the end of August he has made three starts with a better 3.57 ERA. Like deGrom, he has never faced his opponent in his career and never faced any individual batters in a major league game.

So its a game of mysteries tonight with two rookies on the mound.

Lets Go Mets!

First pitch is at 7:10pm.

In his last start, Niese got the win despite not having his best stuff. He gave up 6 runs on 10 hits while the offense bailed him out, scoring 8 runs against the Marlins.

Mets outfielders have been getting it done lately. Curtis Granderson went 5-12 (.417) with two home runs and six RBI during the recently completed series at Cincinnati. The Mets are 15-2 this year in games that Kirk Nieuwenhuis starts. Since he rejoined the team on August 5, Nieuwenhuis is batting .321 (9-28).

Juan Lagares had a career-high three stolen bases yesterday and has eight stolen bases in his last nine games after having four stolen bases in his first 94 games this year.

Travis d’Arnaud has 13 home runs, the most by a rookie catcher in team history, the most among NL rookies this season and tied for the fourth-most in the majors among rookies.

Starting Lineup

  1. Juan Lagares – cf
  2. Kirk Nieuwenhuis – lf
  3. David Wright – 3b
  4. Lucas Duda – 1b
  5. Travis d’Arnaud – c
  6. Curtis Granderson – rf
  7. Wilmer Flores – ss
  8. Dilson Herrera – 2b
  9. Jon Niese – P

The Mets look to build off of a series win against the Reds with a series against the Rockies tonight as a strong month could allow the Mets to flirt with a .500 record for the year. Yesterday the Mets had strong pitching from Wheeler, which led him to his 10th win of the season, and received timely hitting from Recker and Granderson, the latter who is two homers away now from a 20 homer season. Tonight Jon Niese takes the mound against Jordan Lyles.

Jon Niese is 8-10 over 26 starts with 161.1 innings of work and a 3.68 ERA. Niese had a stretch of four strong starts where he allowed 3 ER or less but allowed 6 ER over 6.0 innings in his last start against Miami. He missed the Rockies earlier this season and last year he allowed 3 ER over 6.0 innings and 9 hits in a loss. The Rockies have the following numbers against Niese:

  • Stubbs 2-13
  • Barnes 1-2, 2B
  • Morneau 2-3, 2B
  • Rutledge 1-2, HR

Lyles is 6-2 on the season over 18 starts and 103.1 innings with a 4.35 ERA. He is also coming off of a poor start where he allowed 6 ER over 8 hits and 6.1 innings. Before that he allowed 11 ER over 16.2 innings. It has been a while since he has faced the Mets as he missed them this year and last year. Back in 2012 he allowed 1 ER over 3 hits and 6.0 innings on his way to a win. The Mets have the following numbers against Jordan:

  •  Tejada 0-3
  • Wright 2-3, HR
  • E Young 1-2
  • Niese 1-2

The Mets will wrap up their series against the Reds with a 1:10 PM matchup at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati. Zack Wheeler (9-9, 3.45) will get the start for the Mets and will oppose Mat Latos (5-4, 3.46) for the Reds.

Wheeler has allowed three earned runs or less in 12 consecutive starts, tied for the eighth-longest active streak of its kind by a starter in the majors. Wheeler’s ERA since the streak
began is 2.27, good for 11th-best in the majors (minimum 65 innings).

Juan Lagares has hit in six straight games going 10-28 (.357) and has at least one hit in 12 of his last 14 games, going 20-57 (.351). He has six multi-hit games over that span with two home runs and 10 RBI.

Travis D’Arnaud has three doubles, one home run and five RBI in his last three games. He has hit in five straight games, going 11-20 (.550) with multi-hit games in four of those games. He is hitting .286 (61-213) with 10 home runs and 29 RBI in 57 games since returning from Triple-A.

Starting Lineup

  1. Juan Lagares – CF
  2. Kirk Nieuwenhuis – LF
  3. David Wright – 3B
  4. Lucas Duda – 1B
  5. Wilmer Flores – SS
  6. Curtis Granderson – RF
  7. Dilson Herrera – 2B
  8. Anthony Recker – C
  9. Zack Wheeler – RHP

The Mets had some great pitching last night, but their offense was spent from the previous night and couldn’t really do much of anything. Wheeler gets the start for the Mets tonight. On the season he is 9-9 over 28 games and 164.1 innings with a 3.45 ERA. Over his last starts he is 2-1 over 24.0 innings, 28 K’s, with a 3.00 ERA. Wheeler has never faced the Reds in his career, and has never faced anyone on the Reds roster.

On the other side of the field, Mat Latos will be getting the start. He is 5-4 over 15 starts this season and 96.1 innings on the year with a 3.46 ERA. He is coming off of two poor starts where he allowed 9 ER over 12.0 innings. He allowed 5 ER over 13.2 innings against the Mets last year. The Mets have the following numbers against Latos:

  • Wright 2-14, 2B, HR
  • Duda 3-11, 2 2B
  • E Young 3-12, 3B
  • Centeno 0-3
  • Lagares 0-3
  • Captain Kirk 1-3
