Game Notes

With last night’s rain-delayed game officially having ended at 1:22 a.m., the Mets and Braves are poised to become the first teams to have three games completed on the same calendar date since the Cincinnati Reds on Aug. 23, 1996. That day, the Reds finished a game in Atlanta at 1:47 a.m., then played a doubleheader in Miami.

Dillon Gee drove in a run and took a scoreless effort into the ninth before surrendering a walk-off two-run homer to Freddie Freeman as the Braves beat the Mets, 2-1, at 1:22 a.m. at Turner Field. The game started after a three-hour, 43-minute rain delay. Lucas Duda, in his first game at first base, went 4-for-4.

Terry Collins did not second-guess the decision to send out Dillon Gee for the ninth inning. Nor did he second-guess the decision to keep Gee in the game after Justin Upton delivered a one-out single — even though ensuing batter Freddie Freeman had two of the Braves’ three hits entering the ninth inning against Gee.

Justin Turner has been placed on the disabled list with an intercostal strain. Scott Atchison has joined the Mets in Atlanta and is expected to be activated before the first or second game today. Conversely, the Braves placed rookie catcher/outfielder Evan Gattis on the DL before today’s game with a right oblique strain.

In the nightcap, by the way, Zack Wheeler (DOB: May 30, 1990) will become the first player born in the 1990s to appear in the majors with the Mets.

Matt den Dekker, who suffered a fractured right wrist during a March 24 Grapefruit League game, has returned to game action. Den Dekker is making his first appearance with Class A St. Lucie, led off and played center field, finishing 0-for-4 with an RB.

Doubleheader Preview

THE BIG DAY..

Today is more than just Harvey day. It is more than Wheeler day. It is more than Wheeler debut day. It is Harvey and Wheeler Day! I would say chances of this happening again are rather slim but the Mets run into bad weather like I miss the subway (ie. a lot). Anyway, last night’s game got delayed until after 10 and the Mets ended up losing the game 2-1 after a 2 run homer in the ninth. Gee was very close to a complete game shutout and he ended up driving in the only run of the game (#Typical). Anyway, since I’ll be working all day, here are both game previews:

Game 1:

Matt Harvey is 5-1 on the season with a 2.04 ERA over 97.0 innings with 102 K’s vs 20 BB’s. In his last start, he allowed 1 ER over 7 innings and criticized himself for not putting up 0′s. In reality, he didn’t get any run support. Last year he allowed 2 ER over 6.0 innings of work while walking 5 and striking out 3 (one of the few games where he walked more than struck out). The Braves have the following numbers against Harvey:

Alex Wood takes the mound for the Braves in the first game, making his first start in his major league career. So far this year he has pitched in 6 games, finishing 4 allowing 3 ER over 7.2 innings of work. In the minors this year he made 10 starts totaling 57.0 innings with a sparkling 1.26 ERA at the AA level. In his previous season, at A level, he had a 2.22 ERA over 52.2 innings. As to be expected, he has never faced the Mets and no current Mets have any stats against him.

Game 2:

Zack Wheeler makes his major league debut in the night cap, very close to where he grew up (how many times will we hear that tonight?). At the beginning of the season, the story line was, “Harvey is good, Wheeler is better”. It is hard to believe at this point that will be true at least at the end of this season (Harvey has been better than expected by far) but Wheeler still brings it. In pitcher friendly PCL league, he pitched in 13 games with a 3.93 ERA over 68.2 innings while striking out 73 batters. There are no MLB players with official batting numbers against him.

Paul Maholm at the age of 31, finds himself at the far end of the veteran scale when compared to the other three starters fans will see today. Maholm is 7-5 over 14 games this year while pitching 86.1 innings with a 3.65 ERA. Last year he was fantastic against the Mets in two starts, he pitched 15.0 innings and allowed no runs at all. The Mets have the following numbers against him:

Going To The Game?

Matt Harvey and Zack Wheeler on the mound on the same day?  What a day for Mets fan as their two young phenoms get to showcase their talents in today’s doubleheader in Atlanta. Harvey will get the ball in the opener against Atlanta’s Alex Wood. Wheeler takes the hill in the second game, making his MLB debut against left-hander Paul Maholm. For Mets fans down south, they can see both games for less than the $80 average price of Mets tickets at Citi Field. In general, Braves tickets aren’t too expensive and prices for these two games are even more affordable. For game 1, the average ticket price is currently $37, with a $10 get-in price. For the second game, prices are even lower with an average price of just $32 and a $4 get-in price. Quantities for each game are getting low, so if you’re looking to scoop up some last-minute tickets you should act now.

Game Notes

The Braves are 23-8 at Turner Field this season. Their 2.32 home ERA is on track to be a franchise record since moving to Atlanta, topping a 2.48 home staff ERA in 1968. It also is on pace for the best home ERA for any team since the 1988 Mets had a 2.31 ERA at Shea Stadium.

It looks like the Jordany Valdespin one week trial has concluded and now Lucas Duda has shifted to first base.

Justin Turner has been dealing with an intercostal issue that could land him on the disabled list according to Terry Collins. If he goes to the DL, look for the Mets to replace him with Andrew Brown.

In four career starts at Turner Field, all Mets wins, Dillon Gee is 2-0 with a 2.57 ERA (six earned runs/21.0 innings). He is the only pitcher without a loss in at least four starts at Turner Field in team history. Only five Mets pitchers have ever won three games at Turner Field (Tom Glavine, Pedro Martinez, Al Leiter, Rick Reed and Steve Trachsel).

Zack Wheeler met with reporters at Turner Field on the day before his debut on Tuesday. ”I don’t think I’m the savior at all,” said Wheeler, who attended high school about 45 minutes from here, in Dallas, Ga. “We’ve got great arms here and you’ve got great players. We might not be doing too well right now, but I know the talent of these guys and hopefully we can turn it around here soon. I’m just trying to come up here and help the team any way I can.”

Wright is now three hits shy of 1,500 for his career. He already is the franchise holder for career hits. Wright would become the 30th active player to collect 1,500 hits.

Atlanta leads the NL in homers, yet has been shut out nine times this season, tied with Miami for the major league lead.

The Mets have signed the 48th overall pick righthander Andrew Church for $850,000 The Mets were slotted for $1,138,800 for their second-round pick.

Game Preview

The Mets start a four game set with the Braves tonight with the key day being the double-header tomorrow that is also Harvey/Wheeler Day but before we can get to that, we have a Dillon Gee game. Yesterday the Mets somehow won. At points yesterday the defense was so poor that it doesn’t even qualify under the word defense. Anyway Byrd hit a solo homer to lead off the bottom of the ninth and Kirk followed by a three run homer and the Mets…won. (This team is so Mets) Tonight Dillon Gee goes up against Tim Hudson.

Dillon Gee is 5-6 on the season with a 4.84 ERA while pitching 70.2 innings. This now makes three games in a row where Gee has allowed only one run per game, leaving him with an 1.29 ERA over 21.0 innings and 3-0 record. In his only start against the Braves this year, he allowed 5 ER over 5 innings of work. The Braves have the following numbers against Gee:

The Mets bats get a crack at Tim Hudson who is 4-6 while pitching 83.2 innings this year while posting a 4.41 ERA. Tim had a rough May where he saw his ERA blow up from 3.86 to 5.37. So far in June though he has pitched 21.2 innings over three starts with a 1.66 ERA. In one start against the Mets this year he allowed 3 earned runs over 7.1 innings. Game Notes

The Mets haven’t scored more than five runs at home in their last 25 games (since April 25). It’s the third-longest streak in team history, behind a pair of 26-game stretches (1968, 1979).

Jeremy Hefner’s 4.11 ERA ranks second among Mets starters, and he’s allowed only one earned run in each of his last two starts. He also hasn’t had a non-quality start since May 18 — which came against the Cubs.

Third baseman David Wright flied out to the warning track in left in his third plate appearance on Saturday, snapping a career-high-tying streak of reaching in nine straight plate appearances. Wright, five hits shy of 1,500 for his career, is batting .455 with two homers in his last eight games, five of which have been multi-hit efforts.

Carlos Torres exercised a clause in his contract which essentially forced the Mets to promote him to the majors. The Mets had 48 hours to either promote or release Torres after he exercised the clause on Friday. Greg Burke was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas, while Collin McHugh was designated for assignment to make room for Torres on the 40-man roster.

Ike Davis was 1-for-4 with a walk, RBI and two strikeouts Saturday night for Las Vegas. He is bating .211 since his demotion.

Mets players will be wearing blue wristbands and blue ribbon uniform decals today to raise awareness for the Prostate Cancer Foundation…New york is 26-32 all-time on Father’s Day, including 1-2 vs. the Cubs.

Game Preview

The Mets try to redeem themselves today as they play the Cubs after dropping the first two games in the series. Yesterday Jon Niese fumbled through his start but left the team in a position where (under normal circumstances with a lineup that can string together hits into runs) a team could still win. That didn’t happen as the bullpen took a misstep, widened the lead and the Mets offense faded into the distance. Today Jeremy Hefner, making another audition to stay in the rotation when Wheeler arrives, faces off against Matt Garza.

Hefner has been a nice surprise on the team this season. Don’t let the 1-6 record fool you, he has been putting in work this season (sorry, I’m with my students too much and it’s changing my vernacular). Over 13 games he has pitched 70.0 innings with a 4.11 ERA walking 22 batters and striking out 51. In his last four games he has pitched to the tune of a 2.52 ERA over 25.0 innings with 21 strikeouts.His last poor start was against the Cubs where he allowed 4 ER over 4.0 innings of work. The Cubs have the following numbers against him:

Game Notes

Terry Collins said before the game today that shortstop Ruben Tejada is not close to being activated from the disabled list. Tejada has yet to begin running on flat ground; but has been running in a pool. Tejada, 23, injured his quad sliding awkwardly to field a foul popup on the third base side during one of the subway series game against the Yankees. He was initially expected to miss up to eight weeks.

Shaun Marcum allowed four runs in the second inning last night…It was the sixth time this year he’s surrendered three or more runs in an inning…Marcum has allowed 20 of his 34 runs this year in those six innings…Marcum has allowed at least one multi-run inning in each start this year. Marcum dropped to 0-8, the second-longest skid in franchise history to begin a Mets career, as the Chicago Cubs won the series opener, 6-3, Friday night at Citi Field.

David Wright went 3-3 with a walk last night and ended Thursday’s game with three straight singles…He has reached base safely in seven straight plate appearances (six singles, one walk), tying the third-longest streak of his career…Wright reached base safely in a career-best nine straight plate appearances from August 23-24, 2005. Since June 5, Wright is hitting .452 (14-31) with five RBI over a span of seven games.

Daniel Murphy went 2-2 with two RBI tonight with runners in scoring position…Murphy is hitting 16-52 (.308) with RISP this season…Murphy is hitting .522 (12-23) with RISP and two outs.

Jon Niese was 2-0 after his first three starts, and he got a combined 34 runs of support in those two games. However, his record has dipped to 3-5, and the Mets have averaged just 2.6 runs per game in his last nine appearances.

Scott Atchison pitched a scoreless inning tonight for Binghamton (AA) of the Eastern League vs. Bowie…Atchison allowed one hit and recorded one strikeout…He’s been on the 15-Day Disabled List since May 14 with inflammation of his right elbow.

Zack Wheeler, the Mets’ top pitching prospect, is scheduled to make his Major League debut Tuesday in the second game of a doubleheader against the Braves. Mets manager Terry Collins on Friday officially announced Wheeler would pitch in the second game of the twin bill, and Collins acknowledged the start would be widely watched, no matter when the 23-year-old made it.

Niese is 3-5 over 12 games on the season while pitching 68.0 innings with a 4.24 ERA. In his last four starts he’s totaled 27.0 innings with a 1.69 ERA walking 7 while striking out 18. Game Notes

The Mets have a 2-7 record in June and the Cubs are 3-8, and the teams will begin a three-game series at Citi Field on Friday.

Mets Manager Terry Collins was named to this year’s National League All-Star coaching staff yesterday by NL All-Star manager Bruce Bochy of the San Francisco Giants. It will be the second straight year Collins has served on the All-Star coaching staff after working under Tony La Russa last year in Kansas City. Collins also was a coach for the NL team at the 1995 All-Star Game in Texas.

Major League Baseball also announced yesterday that Mets head trainer Ray Ramirez will serve on the National League training staff for the 84th All-Star Game this year. Ramirez was a trainer for the American League All-Star team in 2004 in Houston.

The Mets have hit 12 home runs over their last eight games, including six home runs in their last four contests. New York has hit 31 home runs in 34 home games this year…The Mets had 67 home runs in 82 home games last year.

Marlon Byrd hit his 10th home run of the year yesterday, marking the fifth time he’s reached double-digit home runs in his career. It’s the first time he’s reach double-digit home runs since 2010 when he had 12. Byrd also hit 10 home runs in 2007 and 2008 and had a career-high 20 home runs in 2009 with Texas.

Mets starting pitchers have collected eight consecutive quality starts at home, compiling a 1.63 ERA (10 earned runs/55.1 innings) over this run, which began on May 26. The Mets are 4-4 in those games. Over the team’s last 17 games, Mets starters have compiled a 2.88 ERA (35 earned runs/109.1 innings) with 104 strikeouts.

Since June 5, David Wright is hitting .393 (11-28) with five runs scored, two doubles, two home runs and five RBI over a span of six games. His on-base percentage during that span is .433. He has multi-hit games in four of those six contests. Wright trails the Giants’ Pablo Sandoval by 200,776 votes at third base after the latest All-Star starting player fan voting was released on Sunday. Fans can vote online at Mets.com.

Zack Wheeler allowed one hit and one run over 5.2 innings last night for Las Vegas (AAA) vs. Tacoma. He struck out seven and issued two walks, but suffered the loss in the 11-0 setback. Wheeler is 4-2 with a 3.93 ERA (30 earned runs/68.2 innings) and ranks fifth in the Pacific Coast League with 73 strikeouts and ninth with a 1.28 WHIP.

Rafael Montero was promoted to Las Vegas (AAA) of the Pacific Coast League where he will start tomorrow vs. Colorado Springs. Montero was 7-3 with a 2.43 ERA (18 earned runs/66.2 innings) with 72 strikeouts in 11 starts with Binghamton (AA). He was third in the Eastern League in ERA, first with a 0.92 WHIP and sixth in strikeouts…Montero had a 23.2 Eastern League scoreless innings streak.

Game Preview

The Mets and Cubs start a series in New York tonight as the Mets continue to look for a reliable source of offense. Yesterday Harvey allowed one run, and that was enough to lose the game as the Mets bats did nothing for him, even with David Wright going 3-4. Anyway tonight Edwin Jackson gets the nod for Cubs as he goes up against Shaun Marcum.

Marcum was the definition of hard luck in his last outing. After the the Mets / Marlins game went into extras, Marcum took the hill and tossed 7 scorless frames. In his 8th inning, the 20th in the game, he allowed one run, which saddled him with the loss. It was one of the longest relief outings in major league baseball since the late 80′s and an impressive outing for Shaun forcing his season ERA down to 4.96. However, the Mets bats struggled and he is now 0-7 on the season. The Cubs have the following numbers against Marcum:

The Mets have had six weather postponements this season, the most of any major league team. The Mets will play a doubleheader at Atlanta on June 18, a single game at Colorado on June 27, a split doubleheader at Washington on July 26, a single contest at Minnesota on August 19 and a single-admission doubleheader on September 14 vs. Miami.

The Mets are 9-16 in day games this year, including 4-10 at home. David Wright is ninth in the NL with a .351 batting average during the day.

Matt Harvey is undefeated after his first 13 starts of a season extending his franchise record. Dating back to his final start of 2012, he has gone 14 consecutive starts without a loss. Only four pitchers in Mets history have gone at least 15 straight starts without a loss: Johan Santana (18; 7/4/08-4/6/09), Dwight Gooden (18; 5/30/85-8/25/85), Tom Seaver (18; 8/9/69-5/6/70) and R.A. Dickey (16; 4/25/12-7/19/12).

Harvey has eight no-decisions in his last nine starts. This marks the 29th time in major league history that a starting pitcher received eight no-decisions in a nine-start span within one season (with no relief appearances during that streak). Harvey’s 2.66 ERA over those nine starts is the lowest in any of those 29 sequences. The previous low was a 3.07 ERA by Cincinnati’s Erik Hanson from June 12-July 28 in 1994. Harvey is third in the NL with a 2.10 ERA and is fourth in the NL with 95 strikeouts.

Opponents have swung and missed at least 10 times in each of Matt Harvey’s last 16 starts, the longest current streak against any major league pitcher. Harvey is the first pitcher in Mets history with four or more strikeouts and three or fewer walks in 19 consecutive starts. Surpassed Dwight Gooden’s streak of 16 such performances in 1985. Harvey’s streak is the longest in the majors since Cliff Lee had 24 straight such starts from July 4, 2012-May 6, 2013.

The Mets six minor league teams (Las Vegas, Binghamton, St. Lucie, Savannah and the two Dominican League teams) have combined for a .565 (156-120) winning percentage, the third-best among major league teams. Only Texas (.574) and Houston (.566) are better.

Left-handed reliever Jack Leathersich was promoted to Las Vegas (AAA) after last night’s game. Leathersich was 2-0 with three saves and a 1.53 ERA (five earned runs/29.1 innings) in 24 games with Binghamton (AA). Leathersich had 55 strikeouts in those 29.1 innings. Leathersich has 194 strikeouts in 114.0 innings during his minor league career.

The Mets had a new look on the field last night and if the game ended after the first inning, it would have looked great. As the game went on the defense started to fall apart and the pitching couldn’t stop the bleeding as the Mets ended up allowing 7 unearned runs. The Mets look to reverse this tonight, as well as score some runs as Dillon Gee takes the mound against Shelby Miller.

Dillon Gee is 4-6 over 64.0 innings of work and 12 starts with a 5.20 ERA. Prior to tonight’s game, the Mets will select the contract of infielder Josh Satin from Las Vegas (AAA) of the Pacific Coast League, and recall outfielder Collin Cowgill and lefthanded pitcher Josh Edgin from Las Vegas.

Satin, 28, was hitting .305 (67-220), with 14 doubles, nine home runs and 32 RBI in 59 games for the 51s and will wear #13. Cowgill hit .268 (33-122) with five home runs and 12 RBI in 32 games with Las Vegas. He made New York’s Opening Day roster and hit .157 (8-51) with two home runs and eight RBI in 19 games for the Mets.

Edgin made the Mets’ Opening Day roster, compiling an 0-1 record and a 9.64 ERA (10 earned runs/9.1 innings) in 11 games. He has been with Binghamton (AA) of the Eastern League and Las Vegas, and compiled a 2-0 record and a 6.75 ERA (14 earned runs/18.2 innings) in 16 minor league games.

Over his last eight starts, Jeremy Hefner has recorded a 3.60 ERA (20 earned runs/50.0 innings). Hefner has walked 13 and struck out 41 during that span. Game Notes

The Mets bolstered their relief core with 31-year-old David Aardsma, who had thrown just one Major League inning since 2010 before being promoted from Triple-A Las Vegas. He had a 2.05 ERA with 11 strikeouts in 22 innings. He threw a scoreless 12th inning on Saturday.

Starter Shaun Marcum came into Saturday’s 20 inning game in relief in the 13th inning and picked up the loss despite an excellent appearance out of the bullpen. He went eight innings and gave up just one run on five hits, which is better than almost every start he’s made this season.

After Rick Ankiel went hitless in four at-bats and struck out three times in Saturday’s 20-inning game off the bench, the Mets designated the outfielder for assignment and will promote Kirk Nieuwenhuis from Triple-A Las Vegas. Ankiel was 2-for-his-last-35.

Matt Harvey plans to make his next start. He insisted his lower-back issue was resolved when it was “popped back into place” during a chiropractic adjustment after departing Saturday’s game.

The Mets got excellent pitching throughout the entire game. Harvey started off well, the bullpen took over well and then Marcum got in 8 innings where he, in a twisted decree of fate, allowed only one earned run in the top of the 20, and the Mets couldn’t do anything. Anyway, Jon Niese looks to keep the good pitching going today as he takes on Tom Koehler.

The Mets had a weak showing in the first balloting released for the July 16 All-Star Game at Citi Field. David Wright trails San Francisco’s Pablo Sandoval by 127,176 votes at third base. John Buck ranks a distant third at catcher, trailing overall NL vote leader Buster Posey as well as Yadier Molina.

Jonathon Niese will test his shoulder today by throwing a bullpen session at Nationals Park. Niese, who missed his last start with tendinitis, is aiming to re-enter the rotation Saturday against the Miami Marlins at Citi Field.

Manager Terry Collins, Mets’ coaching staff and team members, front office officials and Mr. Met visited Walter Reed National Military Medical Center earlier today. The Mets visited with the veterans, their families and the staff at Walter Reed and enjoyed a BBQ lunch together.

Omar Quintanilla is hitting .600 (9-15) with one double, one triple, one home run and three RBI over his last four games. Quintanilla has four straight multiple hit games the longest such streak of his career. Since 2012, the only other Met with four straight multi-hit games is David Wright, who accomplished the feat May 8-12, 2012.

From May 28-30, Mets pitchers struck out 34 batters without issuing a walk. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, no other team’s pitchers in the modern era (1900 to date) struck out more than 26 batters without allowing a walk in a three-game span.

New York pitchers went 31.0 innings without issuing a walk from the first inning on May 28 before Shaun Marcum issued an intentional walk in the sixth inning last night. The franchise record is 36.0 innings from July 4-8, 1994.

Game Notes

The Mets have won five games in a row for the first time since May 5-9, 2012. The last time the Mets won six in a row was April 21-27, 2011. New York is 10-8 in the first game of a series, 5-3 in such games on the road.

The Mets won all four games vs. the Yankees, the club’s first season series sweep of the Yankees. The four-game winning streak vs. the Yankees is also a franchise-high. It also marked the first time in team history that the Mets have swept a season series of four-or-more games from any opponent. The Mets outscored the Yankees 16-7 during the four games and Mets pitching staff notched 40 strikeouts over the four nights and issued only two walks.

Mets pitchers have not issued a walk in their last three games tying the franchise record (done three previous times, last, July 5-7, 1994). Also from May 14-16, 1994 and August 29-31, 1968. Cincinnati accomplished that feat earlier this year from April 15-17. The last team to not issue a walk in four straight games was the Yankees (August 1-4, 2011). The last National League team to go four consecutive games without allowing a walk was Philadelphia, June 4-7, 1976.

Dillon Gee struck out 12 and did not walk anybody against the Yankees last night. Gee is the third Mets pitcher this season with at least a dozen strikeouts and no walks in a game. Matt Harvey did it against the White Sox on May 7 and Shaun Marcum against the Braves on May 26. The Mets are only the third team since 1900 to have three different pitchers have a game with at least 12 strikeouts and no walks in the same season.

Dillon Gee became the second pitcher to strike out 12 Yankees, walk none, and allow four hits or fewer since the Yankees moved to New York in 1903. The other was Pedro Martinez in a 17 strikeout, one-hitter on September 10, 1999. Gee established a career-high with 12 strikeouts. His previous best was nine strikeouts.

Over the last nine games, Mets starters have posted a 2.91 ERA (19 earned runs/58.2 innings). over their last six games, Mets starters have tossed 40.1 innings and issued one walk, while notching 47 strikeouts. Overall, Mets starters have a 4.14 ERA, ranking 17th in the majors.

The Mets bullpen has surrendered two runs over its last 13.2 innings (1.32 ERA). New York relievers have seven victories this month, tied with Tampa Bay for the second-most in the majors, one behind Pittsburgh.

The Mets have allowed one run in three of their last four games and have allowed two or fewer runs in four of their last five games.

Bobby Parnell has converted seven straight save chances and earned his ninth save last night. Parnell has three wins and seven saves this month, tied for the fourth-most in the NL. He is tied for the major league lead among relievers in wins (four) and also ranks ninth in the NL with a 1.85 ERA (min. of 20 innings).

Marlon Byrd hit his sixth home run of the year last night. It was the second straight night he connected on a home run. The last time he had home runs in back-to-back games was May 18-19, 2011, with the Cubs against the Marlins. Byrd has five home runs this month, equaling his career-high for any calendar month. Byrd is hitting .258 (16-62) with two doubles, five home runs and 14 RBI in 19 games this month.

Daniel Murphy has at least one hit in 14 of his last 18 games, batting .375 (27-72) with nine doubles, two home runs and 10 RBI over that clip. Murphy collected his 17th double on Wednesday. He is second in the NL, one behind Cincinnati’s Jay Bruce. Since the start of 2012 season, he has 57 doubles, the third-most in the National League.

David Wright hit .357 (5-14) with four runs scored and two RBI vs. the Yankees. Wright has a .381 on-base percentage, the eighth-best mark in the NL. He is tied for fourth with 29 walks, tied for third with four triples and seventh with 11 stolen bases.

The Kings of New York, fresh off a four game sweep of the Yankees and on a five game winning streak fly down to Miami tonight to face a team that is on a 9 game losing streak while Israel and Honduras come to Citi Field to play soccer (as if you haven’t seen that commercial enough in recent days). Anyway the Mets are on an impressive streak when it comes to starting pitching but really could use their offense to step it up (with the exception Wednesday’s game). Tonight Shaun Marcum gets back on the hill as he takes on Jacob Tuner in his 2013 debut.

Shaun Marcum is 0-5 this season over 7 games, 6 starts with a 5.77 ERA over 34.1 innings. In his last start he pitched 7 innings allowing 2 ER while striking out 12 batters. He only made one bad pitch in that game which turned into a 2 run homer. Prior to tonight’s game, the Mets placed infielder Ruben Tejada on the 15-Day Disabled List with a right quad strain and selected the contract of infielder Omar Quintanilla from Las Vegas (AAA) of the Pacific Coast League. Quintanilla will wear #3 and was hitting .333 (42-126) with 26 runs scored, nine doubles, two triples, two home runs and 18 RBI in 47 games for Las Vegas. To make room on the 40-man roster, New York transferred RHP Frank Francisco to the 60-Day DL.

Last night the Mets showed shades of their former selves from the first two weeks of the season jumping out early scoring 5 runs in the first and then scoring 9 runs overall. Hefner finally got a win on the season and everyone (staying true to the orange and blue at least) went home happy. Tonight Dillon Gee looks to hop back on the right track as the Amazin’s look to continue hitting the ball against Vidal Nuno.

Lucas Duda collected his second career walk-off RBI last night. Duda joined Matt Franco (July 10, 1999), David Wright (May 19, 2006) and Jason Bay (July 3, 2011) as Mets who have had walk-off hits against the Yankees. Duda’s other walk-off hit came on August 8, 2011 vs. San Diego. It was the Mets fifth walk-off win this year. New York’s five walk-off wins are tied for the second-most in the majors with Cleveland and Seattle. San Francisco is first with seven. The Mets had six walk-off victories in 2012.

New York’s last six wins at home have come in its final at-bat, the longest streak in team history. Brandon Nimmo went 0-for-5 Tuesday with Savannah, in his first game since April 29. Nimmo, the organization’s 2011 first-round pick, had dealt with a bruised hand and then a back issue. In a drought spanning the absence, Nimmo is now hitless in his last 25 at-bats. But because of a torrid start with the Gnats, Nimmo nonetheless is hitting .305.

The Mets go for four in a row and a season series victory against the Yankees tonight as the Mets travel East on the 7 and North on the 4 to the Bronx tonight. For a third game in a row last night, the Mets received excellent starting pitching and the offense didn’t come around until the bullpen did, just doing enough to get the win. Last night, it was Harvey with the excellent start and the offense did nada until the 9th when they were able to squeeze out two runs for the win. Tonight Jeremy Hefner gets the nod as he goes up against David Phelps.

Jeremy Hefner is 0-5 on the season over 10 games and 9 starts while pitching 51.0 innings with a 4.76 ERA. He pitched good enough to win last time out allowing 2 ER over 6 innings while striking out 7 but then the Mets happened and that went away. Last year he logged one scoreless inning against the Yankees striking out one batter. Since he only worked one inning, and the Yankees are full of injuries, there is no one on the active roster for the Yankees that he has faced.

The Mets bats look to breakout against David Phelps tonight who is 3-2 this season over 11 games, 5 starts while pitching 50.0 innings with a 3.96 ERA. Terry Collins told reporters today at Citi Field that he is unlikely to use Bobby Parnell tonight. Collins said, “after the game last night, I thought he might need a day. He’s iffy at best.” Relievers Brandon Lyon, LaTroy Hawkins or Scott Rice would be used in a save situation in Parnell’s place.

The New York Mets’ last five wins have all come in their final at-bat. This marks the second time in team history that’s occurred. The Mets also had five straight home wins in their final at-bat from May 13-June 2, 1989. Overall, New York has seven last at-bat wins, tied for the sixth-most in the majors this year.

For a second straight game last night, the Mets had excellent starting pitching, but the offense left the starter hanging in no decision land. Last night David Wright hit a bomb so a great Niese wouldn’t get the loss and a clutch Murphy brought in the winning run (followed by the Mets leaving the bases loaded). Tonight Matt Harvey will take the mound against Hiroki Kuroda.

Game Notes

According to Mark Simon of ESPN, Shaun Marcum is the third pitcher to have a 12-strikeout, no-walk game in which he got a no-decision this season. The other two are his teammate, Matt Harvey, and Seattle Mariners ace Felix Hernandez.

Ike Davis had a walk and two hits, including the game-winning two-run single in last night’s win. It was Davis’ first hit with a runner in scoring position since April 19, snapping a stretch in which he was 0-for-26 in those situations. The two hits raised his batting average to .158 for the season.

Lucas Duda had three hits last night including a solo home run against Braves starter Julio Teheran in the fourth innings. It was the ninth homer of season for Duda, who now has a 10-game hitting streak and has raised his average to .242 for the season.

Sandy Alderson had high praise for Yankees GM Brian Cashman whose team is in first place and has gotten great contributions from many of his scrapheap signings. ”They’ve continued to play well in spite of their injuries,” Sandy Alderson said. “They’ve gotten tremendous contributions from many of the players whom they acquired late in spring training or early in the season. You have to admire that. It’s shone a different light on the Yankees and the Yankees franchise what Brian Cashman has been able to do there.” Cashman’s hands were tied this offseason as the owners mandated that he reduce payroll. His signings and trade acquisitions are a big reason the Yankees are in first place despite injuries to Curtis Granderson, Mark Teixeira, Alex Rodriguez and others.

Mariano Rivera should make his final appearance ever at Citi Field as the Mets take on the Yankees this week. The Mets plan to honor Rivera with a video tribute before the game on Tuesday. Rivera has 20 regular-season saves in 22 chances against the Mets. His 91 percent conversion rate is third-best among the 17 pitchers with at least 20 save chances against the Mets.

Relievers Scott Atchison (disabled list on May 14 with elbow inflammation) and Jeurys Familia (DL on May 9, biceps tendinitis) each pitched one scoreless rehab inning Saturday for High-A St. Lucie. One more for Atchison could get him back to the Mets while Familia likely goes to Triple-A Las Vegas.

Shaun Marcum ook the loss in the Mets’ 4-3 defeat to the Reds at Citi Field on May 20. He pitched 6.0 innings, allowed four runs, earned, and six hits. Struck out a season-high seven and walked one. Marcum has received a loss in his first five decisions, and five of his first six appearances with the Mets.

Dillon Gee has now gone five innings or fewer in five straight starts. He’s only topped six innings on one occasion this season. Opponents are hitting .225 against Gee during the first time through the order, but after that, they are batting a cumulative .392.

John Buck leads all major league catchers with 32 RBI and is tied with Toronto’s J.P. Arencibia with 11 home runs. The Mets catchers lead the majors with 12 home runs this year. Combined over the previous two years (2011-2012), they hit 11 home runs.

Lucas Duda extended his hitting streak to a career-best nine games with a single last night. Duda is batting .303 (10-33) during his run with three doubles. His previous best was a seven-game hitting streak done two previous times, last on June 16-24, 2012.

Mets outfielder Rick Ankiel has seven extra-base hits since joining the club on May 13. Daniel Murphy has at least one hit in 12 of his last 14 games and is hitting .446 with two homers and nine RBIs in that span.

Mets relievers Jeurys Familia and Scott Atchison both started their rehab assignments with Single-A St. Lucie on Saturday and each pitched a scoreless inning with a strikeout.

Game Preview

The Mets and Braves finish off their series in the rare/annoying Sunday Night baseball game as the Mets look to avoid being swept. Yesterday the Mets ended up losing two games dropping their resumed baseball game by the score of 7-5 and then their actual baseball game by the score of 6-0. Tonight Shaun Marcum will take the mound as he goes up against Teheran.

Shaun Marcum is 0-5 this season with a 6.59 ERA over 27.1 innings of work. Two starts ago was his best of the season where he allowed only 2 ER over 6.2 innings of work, but in his last outing against the Reds he regressed back to typical Marcum allowing 4 ER over 6 innings of work. Earlier this season he faced the Braves where he allowed 3 ER over 4.1 innings. The Braves have the following numbers against Shaun:

Game Notes

The teams will resume play with none out in the top of the ninth inning on Saturday at 6:10 p.m. The regularly scheduled game is set to start 7:15 p.m. with Mets right-hander Dillon Gee and Braves lefty Mike Minor getting their starts.

Subject to availability tickets from Friday’s suspended game can only be redeemed for complimentary tickets to the Mets game either this evening Saturday, May 25 or this Sunday, May 26 both games against the Atlanta Braves.

The Mets have dropped three in a row and are 3-7 in their last 10 games…New York is 7-10 vs. the National League East this year. The Mets are 2-11 in their last 13 home games and 9-15 overall. Tonight is New York’s only Saturday night home game this year.

Since the start of the 2012 season, Daniel Murphy has 55 doubles, tied for the 2nd-most in the NL, 1 behind Paul Goldschmidt.

Ike Davis’ struggles at the plate continued on Friday. The first baseman went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts and has just one hit and 18 strikeouts in his last 12 games, a span of 45 plate appearances.

Former Brave Rick Ankiel is hitting .343 since signing with the Mets on May 13, four days after being released by the Astros. He went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts Friday.

David Wright is hitting .311 (23-74) with three doubles, four home runs and nine RBI in May…He is fourth in the NL with a .402 on-base percentage. Wright is also hitting .400 with RISP, the 10th-best mark in the National League.

Marlon Byrd delivered a RBI single in the fifth inning last night that gave the Mets a 3-2 lead. Byrd has four go-ahead RBI this year tied for the third-most on the team. He’s batting .302 (13-43) with three home runs and a team-high 10 RBI this month..

Game Preview

The Mets and Braves will play 1.1 (or more) games today as they finish off last night’s game and then start tonight’s game. Last night the Mets had a 3-2 lead with Hefner in the game before the bullpen let the game get away. Right before the game was almost called, the Mets scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to tie it causing tonight’s first game. Right now (7:50 AM), I am not sure who will start the resumed game for both teams so I can’t preview that. I can however preview tonight’s scheduled game between Dillon Gee and Mike Minor.

Dillon Gee is 2-5 on the season over 9 games with a 6.04 ERA while pitching 44.2 innings. May continues to be a struggle for Gee who has a 6.16 ERA over 19.0 innings. He didn’t face the Braves the first time around this year and last year he made one start against the Braves where he allowed only one earned run in 7 innings of work. The Braves have the following numbers against Dillon:
