Even Wilmer Flores Knows He Belongs At 3B, Not SS
I couldn’t help reading some comments Mets shortstop prospect Wilmer Flores made this weekend during an interview with a local beat writer who covers the St. Lucie Mets. Most Mets fans must have heard at one time or another that scouts, analysts and baseball people are pretty much in agreement that Wilmer Flore will not remain at shortstop, and most likely will be shifted to third base or left field. In fact, Baseball America projects Wilmer [...]

Beltran, Beltran, Beltran!!!
GOING… GOING… GONE! WELL DONE, BELTRAN! Beltran homered three times for the first time in his career on Thursday to beat the Colorado Rockies, 9-5, at Coors Field. “I always wondered how it would feel to get three homers in a game. It feels great! Being able to do something like this, I feel like a little kid, honestly. I was smiling. I never smile a lot, but I was smiling. I was happy.” David Wright, who had the [...]

Mets Sign Top Dominican Pitcher
According to Baseball America, the Mets have agreed to terms with Luis Mateo for $150,000, which should end a three-year process for the 21-year-old Dominican righthander with a mid-90s fastball to get signed. Mateo originally agreed to terms with the Giants on July 2, 2008, for $625,000. The Giants had that contract voided in August, however, when a physical revealed bone chips in his right elbow. Mateo was evaluated that September by Dr. Lewis Yocum, [...]

Move Over Reyes, Samuels Is New NL Steals Leader
You gotta chuckle when you read what NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly said regarding former Mets clubhouse manager Charlie Samuels who was brought up on charges today and arrested. “This is a case of the equipment manager leading the National League in steals,” New York City police commissioner Raymond Kelly said in a statement. According to the report, which can be read at ESPN New York, Samuels stockpiled 507 signed and unsigned jerseys, 304 hats, 828 bats, [...]

DePo Likes What He Sees From Nieuwenhuis
Adam Rubin posted some comments about Mets prospect Kirk Nieuwenhuis made by Vice President of Player Development, Paul DePodesta “Obviously he’s having a great year,” DePodesta said. “There’s no real story there. The thing that is interesting to me about it is that he’s one of the rare guys that as he moves up levels, he continues to get better. His performance gets better at each level. That’s generally rare. But he’s a guy out [...]

Chris Young Was A Good Risk, Well Worth Taking
I wanted to update this with some great information from analyst/statistician/Met historian Mark Simon at ESPN who writes, Young’s 1.88 ERA would be the best overall mark for any Mets pitcher who made at least four starts with the team. In single-season annals, it’s topped only by Dwight Gooden’s 1.53 ERA in 1985, Mike Birkbeck’s 1.63 ERA in four starts in 1995 and Tom Seaver’s 1.76 ERA in 1971. Young allowed only 12 hits over those [...]

Jeurys Familia Promoted To Binghamton
After Saturday’s game and during the post game show on SNY, the Mets announced that RHP Jeurys Familia has been promoted from High-A St. Lucie up to Double-A Binghamton. Familia was off to a great start at St. Lucie and had a 1-1 record with a 1.49 ERA in six starts. He racked up 36 strikeouts against eight walks in 36 innings pitched. The 21-year old right-hander was a surprising choice, but deserving nonetheless. His teammate and Mets 2010 draft pick Matt Harvey [...]

David Wright Is NOT Available!
Yesterday on MLBTR, they linked to a report in the Detroit News, that the Detroit Tigers were interested in David Wright. “David Wright looks as if he will be available and the Tigers almost certainly will be among those clubs inquiring. The New York Mets third baseman is only 28 and has the bat, as well as the glove, to make third base an All-Star position in Detroit.” I was actually going to comment on [...]
