Cubs Give Starter Tyler Chatwood a Three-Year Deal

The Chicago Cubs announced they’ve signed right-handed starter Tyler Chatwood. Chatwood’s deal is expected to be for three-years, $38 million according to Carrie Muskat of MLB.com.

Chatwood, 27, went 8-15 with a 4.69 ERA in 2017 though those numbers are inflated by Coors Field. Although his home ERA was 6.01, his road ERA was 3.49. He did walk 77 batters on the season though, fourth most in the majors and 40 of them came on the road in only 77.2 innings.

Chatwood’s 1.56 K/BB was the third worst in the majors last season among starters that threw at least 140 innings and only Wade Miley had a walk rate higher than his 4.69 BB/9.

He has a 2.57 cumulative road ERA over the past two seasons which is the sixth-best in baseball and saw a jump from 92.6 MPH in 2016 to 94.6 MPH on his four-seamer in 2017.

The Chatwood signing gives the Cubs rotation depth they need with Jake Arrieta and John Lackey hitting free agency this offseason.
