Winter Ball Recap: Jenrry Mejia Wild Again

The Scottsdale Scorpions lost 7-6 in extra innings despite terrific relief appearances from three New York Mets prospects.

2B Luis Guillorme (1-5, 2B, BB, 4 LOB)

Playing time has been sparse for the 23-year-old, who hasn’t played since November 3rd. Nevertheless, his stint in the AFL has been impressive, as he has hit .308/.341/.385 and displayed his usual spectacular defense.

LHP Kyle Regnault (2 IP, H, BB, K, WP)

The southpaw came into the game to start the fourth inning after a poor start from Scottsdale’s starter, Wendolyn Bautista. He pitched well in his two innings of work, improving on his already tremendous ERA of 0.93. He now has a 0.77 ERA. The 28-year-old has now struck out 15 and walked only three in 11.2 AFL innings.

Matt Pobereyko (2 IP, HBP, 2 K,)

The 25-year-old pitched in his seventh game for the Scottsdale last night, shutting down the Surprise lineup for two innings. This has been the norm for him during his season: he’s pitched 10.2 innings without allowing a run. Equally more impressive is his WHIP which stands at 0.57 after tonight’s outstanding performance. He has struck out 13 and issued just one walk.

Tim Peterson (2 IP, R, WP, K)

Peterson is another Mets pitching prospect who has raised some eyebrows in the AFL. Coming into a tied game in the 9th, he pitched two innings, decreasing his ERA to 0.96. Although he did give up an unearned run in his 2nd inning, AFL’s rules state that every extra inning must start with a runner on 2nd base. This was the second run he’s given up this season in 10.1 innings. His control has been outstanding: two walks in those 10.1 innings.

Winter Ball Action

Jenrry Mejia made his second appearance in the Venezuelan Winter League and it did not go well after throwing only 21 strikes in 44 pitches. He allowed three runs on two hits, three walks, wild pitch and struck out only one. He has now walked eight batters in his first six innings.

Wuilmer Becerra played left field for the Tigres de Aragua of the Venezuelan League and went 1 for 3. He’s gone 4 for 11 with a home run and five strikeouts thus far.

I’ve been a Mets fan ever since I was young, which unfortunately means my first Mets memory is Carlos Beltran taking a curveball in 2006. I’m hoping for better Mets memories ahead. My twitter is https://twitter.com/Cuso__.
