Mets Favorites to Sign Two Dominican Amateurs

According to a report by Baseball America’s Ben Badler, the Mets are the team most likely to sign two young amateurs from the Dominican Republic. Ronny Mauricio, 15, and Adrian Hernandez, 16, have both been linked to the team, and will likely command signing bonuses of at least $1,000,000 this summer, Badler says. Both players will be on display in front of scouts at Major League Baseball’s two-day showcase in the Dominican Republic, which begins Wednesday.

Mauricio is listed as a shortstop, standing at 6’2″ and weighing in at 165 lbs, the same measurements that Amed Rosario checked in at when he was signed in 2012. Mauricio, who won’t turn 16 until April 4, hits from both sides of the plate, although from the limited video available he appears to look more comfortable in the left handed batters box. Mauricio has a smooth glove and strong arm, but like all players his age, he needs a lot of fundamental work.

Hernandez, a 6’0″, 180 lb. outfielder appears to be very intriguing. He generates noticeable power from the right side, although his stance and load can be inconsistent. Hernandez also has a strong arm and above average speed, as he runs a 6.3 second 60-yard dash.

Badler also notes that the upcoming international signing period will be the first under new CBA rules. These regulations set a hard cap for each team, with harsh penalties for those who exceed it. The Mets’ bonus pool will be set at $4.75 million.

Given the Mets’ recent success with international prospects such as Amed Rosario, Andres Gimenez, and Raul Beracierta, it should certainly be exciting to keep an eye on names that the team has been linked to.
