Adam Rubin surmises that the Mets will likely demote Gonzalez Germen and Rafael Montero when the Mets activate Jacob deGrom on Saturday and Bartolo Colon on Sunday.
There is also the possibility that the Mets could simply find a candidate who they could place on the DL, perhaps Jenrry Mejia who in addition to a knee and hernia issue is now dealing with a sore back.
Terry Collins told reporters that Bartolo Colon, who is on bereavement leave to mourn the death of his mother, will start for the Mets on Sunday against the Dodgers in Los Angeles. After his start, Colon then will return to the Dominican Republic to attend his mother’s funeral.
This sets up the weekend rotation with Jon Niese on Friday, Jacob deGrom on Saturday, and Colon on Sunday.
The Mets will need to make two roster moves before activating deGrom and Colon. They also have Daisuke Matsuzaka nearing a return after his next rehab start.
Finally, the Dodgers have altered their pitching rotation to give Zack Greinke two extra days of rest. Clayton Kershaw, who was originally scheduled to start Friday against the Mets, will instead go Thursday against the San Diego Padres on his normal four days of rest. Big break for the Mets.
