The Mets try to secure their series against the Cubs today as they send Carlos Torres (5-5, 3.68) to the hill in a spot start against one of the elite rookie starters in the National League, Kyle Hendricks (4-1, 1.73).
Bartolo Colon was scratched from his start this afternoon as he heads home to be with his ailing mother. Carlos Torres will get the spot start, his first of the season. Last year he made 9 starts, finishing with an ERA of just 3.44, a career best. Torres last appeared in yesterdays loss, going just a third of an inning.
David Wright returns to the lineup this afternoon after missing yesterdays game with a sore shoulder blade.
An interesting note on Hendricks is that he was called up on July 10th of this season and sports a combined record of 14-6 between AAA and the majors this season.
Today marks the third of three straight Friday to Monday four-game wrap-around series. The Mets went 1-3 against San Francisco and 3-1 against Philadelphia. They have won two of the first three games and look to win the series against Chicago today.

The Mets bats will try to find themselves against Kyle Hendricks who is off to a strong start in his major league career. He is 4-1 over 6 starts with a 1.73 ERA over 41.2 innings with 9 walks and 26 K’s. He made 17 starts in the minors this year with 102.2 innings of work, a 10-5 record and a 3.59 ERA. He has never faced the Mets in his career and he has not faced anyone on the Mets roster in a major league game.
