The New York Mets are in action on Tuesday night, in the second game of the three-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals.  New York is looking to rebound from Monday night’s 6-2 loss.  First pitch is scheduled for 8:15 PM at Busch Stadium.

Jon Niese (3-3, 2.54) gets the nod for the Mets, who was victim to a no-decision last time out and is set to face Michael Wacha (4-5, 2.88)

A bright spot for the Mets this season has to be Niese’s performance.  Since returning from the disabled list back in August, Niese has made 23 starts and has a record of 8-5.  His ERA over that span is 2.74 which is fourth best in the majors over that time frame.

Niese has a bit of a streak going.  He has gone 17 consecutive starts allowing three earned runs or less, which is second longest current streak in the majors.  One thing that bodes well for Niese and the Mets is the six wins over his last 10 starts.

Lucas Duda has hit five doubles over his last four games, and eight for the month of June.  Andrew McCutchen is the only player in the majors that has more than Duda this month.

Daniel Murphy continues to stand his ground in the hits category against Paul Goldschmidt.  Murph has 85 on the season which is two behind Goldy.  On top of hitting, Murphy can score too.  He has scored eight runs in his last eight games, and is a fifth place tie in the National League with 45 runs total.

This is the second game in a row, and second in Mets history with the pitcher batting in the eighth spot in the order.  Monday night Jacob deGrom had the honor and went 0-for-1.

Starting Lineup

  1. Curtis Granderson – CF
  2. Daniel Murphy – 2B
  3. David Wright – 3B
  4. Bobby Abreu – RF
  5. Lucas Duda – 1B
  6. Anthony Recker – C
  7. Ruben Tejada – SS
  8. Jon Niese – P
  9. Eric Young Jr. – LF

After USA was able to shut the door on Ghana yesterday, the Mets were the Mets of late and just couldn’t get it done against the Cards as they fell 6-2. Tonight Jon Niese will try to get the Mets back on track tonight as he goes up against Michael Wacha.

Jon Niese is 3-3 over 13 starts and 85.0 innings with a 2.54 ERA. In the month of June he has pitched 22.2 innings over 3 games not picking up any decisions with 17 K’s and a 1.99 ERA. Earlier this year he pitched 6.2 innings against the Cards allowing 6 hits with 2 walks and 3 strikeouts with one earned run. The Cardinals have the following numbers against Jon:

  • Molina 5-13, 2B
  • Holliday 2-12
  • Craig 1-8, 2B
  • Ellis 4-9
  • Jay 3-9, 2B
  • Carpenter 4-7, 2 2B

Wacha is 4-5 this year over 14 games and 84.1 innings with a 2.88 ERA. June has not been typical for Wacha as he has allowed 7 ER over 11.0 innings with only one strikeout and 5 walks in two games. Earlier this year he picked up a loss against the Mets pitching 4.0 innings, allowing 3 hits and 2 runs, walking 5 and striking out 10 (one of the most bizarre lines against the Mets this year). The Mets have the following numbers against Wacha:

  • Duda 0-3
  • Murphy 2-5
  • Wright 0-4
  • Granderson 1-3
  • Tejada 0-1
  • C Young 0-2

Lets Go Mets!
