The New York Mets will host the St. Louis Cardinals this afternoon at Tradition Field in Port St. Lucie at 1:05 PM. Veteran right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka opposes Cardinals right-hander Shelby Miller. The game will be televised on SNY.

The Mets will have to pay Matsuzaka $100,000 by noon on Tuesday if they do not guarantee him a spot on the Opening Day roster.

Matsuzaka has been expected to be the fifth starter, but has been challenged by fellow righty Jenrry Mejia who tossed five stellar innings against the Washington Nationals on Sunday.

Mets brass is expected to meet early this week to decide who will be the fifth starter, and manager Terry Collins admitted that the team is split right now. My guess is that Dice-K’s fate is riding on his start today.

Here are today’s lineups:

Mets

  1. Eric Young Jr. LF
  2. Daniel Murphy, 2B
  3. David Wright, 3B
  4. Curtis Granderson, RF
  5. Chris Young, CF
  6. Lucas Duda, 1B
  7. Travis d’Arnaud, C
  8. Daisuke Matsuzaka, RHP
  9. Ruben Tejada, SS

Cardinals

  1. Matt Carpenter, 3B
  2. Mark Ellis, 2B
  3. Allen Craig, 1B
  4. Jhonny Peralta, SS
  5. Stephen Piscotty, RF
  6. Peter Bourjos, CF
  7. Shane Robinson, LF
  8. Tony Cruz, C
  9. Shelby Miller, RHP

Game Notes:

We may be looking at our Opening Day lineup right there…

Ike Davis, who left Sunday’s split-squad game after experiencing fatigue, is getting another day off to get some rest. Sandy Alderson said he was feeling beat after playing in four straight games.

Jon Niese appeared upbeat after throwing off a mound for the first time since receiving a cortisone shot in his elbow last Monday. The Mets hope he pitches in two minor-league games, then is activated from the disabled list April 6 to face the Cincinnati Reds at Citi Field.

Wilmer FloresMatt den DekkerKirk Nieuwenhuis and Zach Lutz were optioned to minor-league camp Monday morning and told they would start the season in Triple-A Las Vegas.

Enjoy the game and Lets Go Mets!
