Matz’s Solid Pitching Performance Leads To 3-1 Savannah Win

Savannah 3, Rome 1

Game one of the four game series between the Savannah Sand Gnats and the Rome Braves was played in front of 2,999 fans Thursday evening at Grayson Stadium.

Savannah outhit Rome 10-6 and won the game 3-1. Savannah has now won 9 out of their last 10 home games.

Rome scored first in the 2nd inning when first baseman Casey Kalenkosky led off the inning with a home run over the right field fence.

Savannah scored three runs in the sixth inning when catcher Kevin Plawecki led off with a walk. Third baseman Cole Frenzel was hit by a pitch. Right fielder Maiki De La Cruz singled to load the bases, and then Plawecki scored on a wild pitch.

Left fielder Greg Pron followed with a walk to load the bases. A sac fly scored the second run and the third run came in on a throwing error by the third baseman.

Playing his first game for the Sand Gnats, Maiki De La Cruz was 2-for-4 and scored a run. Frenzel was 2-for-3 and scored a run. DH Jeff Glenn was 2-for-3 and had an RBI and CF Eudy Piña was 2-for-5.

Savannah’s only left-handed pitcher, Steven Matz, (2-0) pitched 6.0 solid innings allowing only one run on six hits, one walk while striking out four.

Reliever, Hunter Carnevale, pitched 2.0 shutout innings. Bret Mitchell struck out two batters in the 9th to earn his 5th save of the season.

Game two of the series will be played Friday evening at 7:05 PM at Historic Grayson Stadium. The Gnats will send RHP Rainy Lara (4-1, 1.45) to the mound against RHP Mauricio Cabrera (1-2, 3.16).
