Well put, vigouge. The guy's premise was interesting, but he didn't back it up. The fact that Darren O'Day went on to be successful is irrelevant to his point, and even more so is the Seaver trade. Oliver Perez's refusal to accept a demotion can hardly be considered as the Mets giving pitchers too much control over their condition--Ollie was contractually allowed to refuse.

This is a very thin body of evidence. You mention 5 players more than 6 years apart one (Santana) coming off a very unique injury/rehab program that almost no other team has ever experienced, another (Marcum) who isn't going to miss a start, one (Pelfrey) who missed one start then blaming for not missing 3 by going on the dl? The other two, Perez and Martinez, are just nonsensical. Perez was dl'd and maybe you have inside information that Pedro dogged it but that's one hell of an accusation. See the Pedro I remember pitched his ass off before injuring his hip when the whiny Marlins made him change his uniform top, then trying to get back in time for the playoffs he tore his rotater cuff yet still made if back in less than a year to help the team in 07.

Considering the sheer amount of pitcher that cycle through any team in any half dozen years having only a few examples is fairly good. Then to suggest that it's some sort of team policy, a policy that somehow has made it through two pitching coaches, two GM's, and 2 managers, seems like a reach at best.

There probably isn't a pitching coach out there who knows as much about Pitching as Peterson....

But sometimes too much knowledge can be dangerous....

Peterson is the POLAR OPPOSITE of Warthen....

Warthen never seem to do anything to keep them on top of thier game and only acts after they struggle to find out why....

Peterson was on top of them almost on a pitch by pitch basis and even when they were going good would tweak and experiment on them...

I would like to see someone inbetween the two extreems myself...

I feel the same way. Roy Halladay is a prime example.

The article should have mentioned a washed up Al Leiter salary dispute with the Mets when he came crawling back and the Mets took the offer off the table. I thought that the Mets not giving in to a delusional demand was proactive and correct. Although I would not call Al Leiter a diva such as Mike Hampton. On the other side of the coin R.A. Dickey makes John Delcos' point.

I don't think this is a specific METS behavior.......that's illustrated by the fact that you've gone back over years spanning two separate Front Office and Field Manager Regimes. Pitchers get hurt---they are Physically Fickle.... Reality.

The Mets signed Marcum...CHEAP and DAMAGED. Their "spouts" of "he has this every spring" are true!!!!---for the past 4-6 years his arm has been close to Final Failure. He's milking it along-----nobody else knows what he's feeling physically. There is no Plug In Remedy---no ready to go fix. This is virtually identical to Santana's Situation---minus the Cy Young awards.

Thinks about it----- 5 spots in the rotation-------- THREE injured pitchers occupy those slots (Gee).

This is a much broader problem and it's not specific to pitchers------ they are filling their roster with hope and fools gold until some brighter day arrives---- BTW, that brighter day can only be "AWAITED".....and by THREE highly paid wise men. Eh......I'd rather have another healthy starter and a Major League Outfielder.

John,
I'm not saying this is right or wrong, but this is not a phenomenon that unique to the Mets. Veterans all throughout MLB, and especially those with injury history, are doing the same thing. A new pitching coach isn't going to change that. The tail wagging the dog is a natural consequence when employees are being paid guaranteed salaries that are many times more than their "boss's" salary.
