From what I’ve been reading the knock on Dom Brown isn’t so much his bat – as they think that will come around once fully healthy – it’s his defense in the OF. Apparently, he hasn’t shown much improvement with that as they would have liked to have seen by now.

I don’t think he has ever actualy been healthy over that time, and it has been a lot of in/out and up/down. From what I have been reading, he looks much different in ST this year, plus he still is pretty young (23?).

no guarantees, but if I have to pick 1 guy on the Phils as a sleeper/breakout candidate, he is the one.

Dominic has the pedigree and the prospect status, but in 433 major league ab’s (he’s been getting shots at the ML roster since 2010) Brown has 12 homers and a .236 AVG. He hasn’t shown he can do it, not even for a small stretch. Personally, I’d have to see something from him at the major league level before I’d consider picking him up.

on a set team, often the sleeper is a guy that is blocked by someone that is an injury risk. so you might get nothing, or he could end up being a starter.

I would actually that Dom Brown is a perfect sleeper candidate for them. He probably slides in a lot of drafts (the fantasy angle) but has a very good chance at being the everyday RF, and could put up some good numbers. would of course truly suck, but so far in the spring he looks healthy and you see what the previous hype was about.

Recker is a big kid … saw him standing next to David Wright and I was like is that right? Wouldn’t want to run into him at home plate. Maybe they can substitute him for D’Arnaud if there’s a guy in scoring position late in the game lol.

It seemed like the better the team (Nats, Cards) the fewer the sleeper candidates but I’m not really sure there’s a correlation. The Nats really didn’t have anyone who qualified as sleeper material. Most every one of their starters present with some value. Spahn is no ball of fire and Lambardozzi is a bench player but those two might have upside. Perseus, I struggled with the Aoki pick but I had him on and off and he did well for me (I won my league) … interestingly though by the end of the season he’d been snatched up for good by someone else and I ended up with Gomez who was great down the stretch. I should have included Gomez as an official pick. Some day I’m going to construct a team composed totally of sleepers just for the hell of it to see how they do.

I know that I will be scoffed at by my fellow Met fans but one of the sleepers for me is Anthony Recker. The few times I saw him behind the plate for the Mets this spring he looked like a fine defensicve catcher and his career batting average is pretty good. I saw him throw a bullet to 2nd on an attempted steal that was textbook. If D’Arnaud goes down I would definitely keep him as a backup to Buck.I like the guy.

I like this idea for a fresh article.

It warms my heart to no end that the best candidate you could come up with for the Phillies is Lannon.
Looking at their OF, it doesn’t look much better than ours. Dom Brown could be a breakout candidate I suppose and finally show some of the talent they were hyping.

Random comments… I don’t like Aoki that much, but that’s just me. Nice to see Valdespin getting some love. And Cozart’s a nice call purely because he provides pop at a position starved for it.

I like the bits of humor to be found in this piece, so kudos. The research also shines through, so good job there as well.
