Murphy In Batting Cage, Mejia Was Examined For A Thyroid Issue

Jenrry Mejia

Updated by John Delcos at 10:00 AM

Players hit in the cages this morning as it rained here. The weather here has been awful; rainy and chilly. Nothing sun drenched about PSL these days.

Those hitting include Daniel Murphy, who took an injection for a strained intercostal muscle on his right side.

Also on the injury front, Jenrry Mejia was examined in New York yesterday for a thyroid issue and Zack Wheeler threw on flat ground and will do so again today. Kirk Nieuwenhuis is hobbling around with a bruised left knee.

Original Post

They wouldn’t be the Mets if there weren’t injury news. Jenrry Mejia returned to New York this morning to have an undisclosed medical condition checked out. As with Pedro Feliciano before him, his reporting physical was red flagged.

Mejia is coming off Tommy John surgery, but there is no word yet whether the injury is related to his elbow.

Mejia, who is expected to open the season at Triple-A Las Vegas, was scheduled to pitch in a “B’’ game this morning against Miami.

Sandy Alderson told us he has an “undisclosed medical issue”.

  • Hopefully it’s nothing serious.

  • Oh boy….
Shades of Pedro or Reyes (thyroid issue)? – hopefully it’s not serious.

I was a little curious about Pedro’s physical picking up that hole/tear outside of his heart. I read somewhere they’re assuming he was born with that. Have to wonder with all the physicals he’s likely taken in his career, why it just showed up now.

    • Oftentimes improvements in sonography reveal conditions previously undetected. On other occasions, the new equipment yields “false positives.’

In Mejia’s case – yeah, we’ll see him through the condition, get him tip-top shape, wait until he reaches an organization milestone and then allow him to walk away without reasonable compensation.

      Thanks, Sandy

      • I just don’t know how Homeland Security missed his thyroid condition, also! :D

  • Off topic, but read this:

    http://www.pinstripedbible.com/2013/3/4/4064964/source-robinson-cano-alex-rodriguez-ryan-braun-and-curtis-granderson

Ohhh, and if it hold true, that guy that was defending braun to no end last year, APOLOGY ACCEPTED you Piece of ____

    • Alex, Francesa just said that the rumor is false, there is nothing to substantiate it and they even mentioned that writer’s name.

    • We tracked down that rumor at 10pm last night and discovered it was bogus like the one who originated it.

Please get the piece of ___________ terminology out of your vocabulary on this site.

      • Hi Joe D.,

I just did a quick search for more details about this rumor. After viewing six pages of links on Google, I could not come up with one report from a media source – they were all from non-media websites.

It might be true, but right now we need to be cautious. This is the one drawback of the internet – while we get an onslaught of instant access to all sources of news and information, we are also suseptable to unsubstantiated rumors coming from less than credible websites.

    • Bayonne, funny, francesca and other people were actually destroying the guy’s credibility last year before the melky stuff, then it was true. Of course francesca will deny the yankees ever done anything wrong or bad, he’s the ultimate yankee homer. Let’s wait and see on this, but imho, braun should be the first one suspended for making a mockery of the system.

    • i will… it’s funny how you LOVE to come after one of us, but when jessep was intigating me and trying to bait me you were nowhere to be found…

      • Alex,

Once again you speak without knowing all the facts.

I asked Michael Branda (Jessep) to stop responding to all three of you after I was contacted by Maniac and Bayonne. He has been informed.

By the same token you will refrain from REFERENCING him or REPLYING to him as well.

If you are debating someone he will NOT jump in.

If he is debating someone neither will either of you jump in.

You all got what you wanted. This is ridiculous to me, but it’s your deal. Now lets see if all of you can stick to it.

We’ll see who blinks first….. Whomever that is will be gone. This much is true.

      • Funny how we have to send you emails for his act, seems you always miss what he does and has been doing yet are always on top of what we do (hence the many tiems we got sent to the drunk tank). but good, i’ve asked him many times to not respond to me as well, but he doesn’t care because he’s an immortal here, but it is good to see bayonne and maniac take an iniciative on this, finally you step up to the plate, and trust me, it won’t be us who blink first, but i do hope you are true to your word and finally ban the guy for what he’s been doing to us for years without any punishment.
Thanks for commenting and have a clean day………….

        • “Thanks for commenting and have a clean day”

LOL looks like you already blinked.

    • It wouldnt surprise me if it were true. PEDs are NOT out of baseball and few are caught. I wouldnt be surprised if 25% or more were still using something.

  • How many of these “undisclosed medical issues” are being treated with a shot of Penicillin?

  • His undisclosed medical issue is called OverhypedMetsProspectitis. It’s quite common in the Mets organization. Fernando Martinez and Reese Havens had/have it really bad.

    • …is Wheeler and Travis immune to that ?

      • I hope so…but both are already showing injury issues.

    • Those two examples along with Mejia aren’t proof of being over hyped. It’s not as if they just faltered, they all have seen their careers derailed by injury. An over hyped prospect is one that remains healthy but never turns their tools into skills ala Ryan Thompson, Alex Ochoa, or Brad Holt.

      • I had those guys in mind too…just didn’t think most of the guys on this site would remember them.

        • Yeah I’m a little iffy on pre 90′s guys and their hype but I remember Thompson and Ochoa clearly because they were the centerpieces of the Cone and later, Bonilla trades.

  • Thyroid issue? Hopefully it’s not serious.
These guys need to stop eating an abundance of seafood. Have a steak. :-)

    • Surf and turf always works for me. :-)

    • Thyroid is often a genetic issue that is easily treatble with mediction.

Perhaps one of the most common ailments.

Mine was detected in an annual physical. Amazing how that small little gland can mess up your body. Medicated it is no issue just reviewed to ensure it is working right. Worst case it can be removed.

      • It’s an easy fix, and something I know a lot about. It’s just a question of whether it’s hypo or hyperthyroid.

Hypothyroid can be fixed with a medication called Synthroid.
Hyperthyroid can also be fixed through medication, though I don’t know which.

      • Valdy it is possible it could ever be steroid-related?

        • I don’t think so, but then again never taken roids

  • Off topic: I don’t know where to put this, so I’ll leave it here. Apparently, the Braves are open to listening on Jonny Venters. I’d inquire on him in a heartbeat.

    http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/03/braves-could-listen-on-venters.html

    • …and it says “The Braves could seek a left-handed hitting bench player if they do consider trading Venters.”

That describes the entire Mets team almost.

      • Shame Nieuwenhuis got hurt when he did, because he’d be a suitable fit in Atlanta on the bench.

        • I was thinking Cowgill. Take advantage of his hot spring start.

          • With the need of a RH OF and Cowgill right now being the lone promising thing, I wouldn’t know unless they followed up on another trade. Leaving Marlon Byrd as your only other RH OF is not a good idea.

            • My point is it almost doesn’t matter at this point due to the neglect of the roster by Alderson. He had the chance all off season to get players to support the core and young kids coming up and he failed. So if by design the team is not destined to fight for the post season that what use is Cowgill? The GM is probably too busy messing around with his “Deliberate Practice Theory” instead of just getting actual major league starters. So at this point if you can get Venters for Cowgill who wouldn’t do it? If you could pull that off than I would go from there anyway. But i think it would take more than cowgill

            • u would be insane to pass up that deal

          • I think they are looking for a LH so no fit for Cowgill. Also as you well know he doesn’t really have trade value just because of a hot week in ST.

            • Oh but he’s a starting CFer based on a hot spring i guess? I

              • Have I said that?

              • Hi Bayonne,

I was thinking the same things.

Before spring training opened we were all repeating the words “what outfield?” not to poke fun at those who we have but as an acknowledgement that not one was better than fourth outfielder. Now, with Kirk out for a small stretch one only further realizes how much deeper the situation Sandy created is when we have to even jokingly talk in terms of Cowgil as our regular center fielder. I mean, if he just happened to really be good enough for a trade even up for Venters that would mean at least one outfielder we could at least rely on for a little something.

Sure, if we had anything remotely resembling a starting outfield, Cowgil could be considered as part of a package deal for Venters to help address out bullpen problem. But since we have problems in both ares, eve the trading of just a bench player becomes a major concern – because bench players are being counted on as being regulars.

I know building for the future one has to be patient but one never had to become so rock bottom like this. As Metsie pointed out, Sandy Alderson was hired when we were team stuck in the middle and could go either way depending upon the course of action the front office took. But this is now going on his third season and no matter which course of action he decided upon, there was no reason to allow the outfield to become the way it is other than the need not to spend money outweighed the need to field a competitive team.

    • Doesn’t that waive a red flag though if the Braves are considering trading him? Future arm issues? Anyway Detroit would be a logical fit for him and they have some LH hitters.

      • Does for me.
If the Braves are suddenly opening up talks with one of their young pitchers, we should be questioning why. If there’s one thing they’ve done well in the past 20 year years or so it’s developed young pitchers.

  • Oh God, now people are coming up with conspiracy theories just because the Braves have Venters on the block.

Look, The Mets are going nowhere in 2013 due to the roster decisions of the GM (and this is the comment that’s getting these people’s dander up). So since the GM neglected the roster (WHICH HE DID) and the Mets are going nowhere now people are gonna complain about moving scrubs/bench players/journeyman to get a guy like Venters? And what does it matter if there MAY be an injury or not you’re getting him for a friggin’ bench player!

    • You know they aren’t trading him for a scrub.

      • Bayonne Mets Fan March 6, 2013 at 5:51 pm

…and it says “The Braves could seek a left-handed hitting bench player if they do consider trading Venters.”

        • Do you think a LH bench player will be the focal point of the trade? Not me, if so then as many Braves blogs and fans are already speculating, injury would be the concern.

Would I trade one of our thousands of LH for him? Sure.

          • Bayonne Mets Fan March 6, 2013 at 6:26 pm

…..But i think it would take more than cowgill

            • Trs86 March 6, 2013 at 6:41 pm
You know they aren’t trading him for a scrub.

              Round and round we go.

Anyway, Cowgills not even LH so how is he a fit or did you not read your own copy paste?

              • substitute Baxter,

u cudda thought of that instead you want your last word so the floor is yours.
