MMO Flashback: What Should The Mets Do With Jordany Valdespin?
I didn’t have to go too far back for this edition of MMO Flashback which was originally posted on January 30 of this year. But it’s relevancy makes it worth a second look considering it was written long before people started hopping back on the Jordany Valdespin bandwagon. Enjoy…
In 2012, Jordany Valdespin put his name in the Mets record book with one swing of the bat, crushing a three-run homer off Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon on May 7 for his first major league hit. The homer propelled the Mets to a 5-2 victory over their division rival in Philadelphia.
Valdespin had a knack for providing big blasts off the bench in 2012, as his five pinch-hit homers broke the Mets franchise record set by Danny Heep in 1983 and tied by Mark Carreon in 1989. Overall, Valdespin hit eight home runs for the Mets last year. But his ability to hit the ball out of the park wasn’t his only talent.
The 25-year-old from the Dominican Republic produced a total of 18 extra-base hits, scored 28 runs, collected 26 RBIs and stole 10 bases for the Mets in 2012, all without reaching 200 official at-bats. Do you know how many players in Mets history have produced 18+ XBH, 28+ runs scored, 26+ RBIs and 10+ SB in the same season, regardless of the number of times they came up to the plate? Well, the answer to that is quite a few, with the majority of the players doing it in full seasons of 500 or more at-bats. But how many of them did it in as few a number of at-bats as Valdespin collected? The answer is zero.
Let’s just consider those players who, in 300 at-bats or fewer, matched or surpassed the number of extra-base hits, runs scored, RBIs and stolen bases that Valdespin achieved for the Mets in 2012. The list is quite small.

Only four players in Mets history have been able to produce a season in which they matched or surpassed Jordany Valdespin’s 2012 totals in extra-base hits, runs scored, runs batted in and stolen bases, while collecting fewer than 300 official at-bats. But all of them needed at least 80 more at-bats to achieve the numbers posted by Valdespin in only 191 at-bats.
Valdespin’s offensive production in 2012 was not a fluke. In 2011, his last full season in the minors, Valdespin collected 52 extra-base hits, scored 69 runs, drove in 60 and stole 37 bases in 511 at-bats between AA-Binghamton and AAA-Buffalo.
Although Valdespin hit .241 for the Mets in 2012 (he hit .294 in the minors in 2011), his ability to drive the ball, find his way around the bases, and swipe a bag or ten are invaluable to a team needing whatever offensive spark it can get. In addition, Valdespin proved to be versatile on the field, playing all three outfield positions and the two middle infield spots.
His attitude and behavior aren’t always exemplary, and sometimes his defense leaves a little to be desired, but there’s no question that Valdespin can be dangerous at the plate and on the basepaths. Like your favorite adult beverage, Valdespin might be harmful in large doses, but when he’s used in reasonable amounts, he can create quite a buzz at Citi Field. And if the Mets want to do what’s best for the team, they’ll use Valdespin in moderation in 2013.

Seeing they don’t want to sign anyone, give the kid a shot. If he performs well then no-one will give a crap about his attitude.
Valdespin can play ball. He’s a gifted athlete and has a solid combination of speed and power. What I like about him most is that he doesn’t play afraid. He wants to be in the big spot at the big time.
Still very early in his career, so a platoon/rotation will suit him well. As he matures, he’ll likely gravitate to one position either at 2nd base or somewhere in the outfield. Over time, I’d like to see him settle into one position. If he can manage to garner 500+ abs, improve his plate discipline and hit @ .300, he could resemble a one-man wrecking crew.
I want to compare him to Jose Reyes b/c he reminds me of him. But there’s something about Valdespin that is so much different. He’s dynamic like Reyes, but in an odd sense, his game is a little more potent, probably because of his raw power…something…more power in his hitting game, more holes in his game defensively…something like that…
I really like his game because he shut up @ 45,000 Philly fans with one swing of his bat. And you just know he’s going to do it again.!
Let him hopefully tear up triple A and use him as trade bait. Stanton should be in right field next year. Good draft and deadline deals this year should help. Valdespin has very good potential and great numbers at triple A could make him a useful trade chip.
I would say the odds of Stanton being in RF for the mets is about 1%, and that might be generous.
disagree.
If Syndergaard has a year similar to last season he surely will be a top 10 prospect. A package of Syndergaard, Flores, one of Montero/Fulmer/Robles/Tapia/Mateo etc. and one of the OF (Kirk, Valdespin, Den Dekker, Duda) should get it done if the prospects develop as expected…
Nimmo should be dumped before he’s exposed for the stiff he’s going to end up being.
And you know this for sure, how?
Three reasons.
1. Depodesta has a miserable draft record. His drafts were nothing short of an abomination with SD and LA
2. Nimmo was awful in Brooklyn. So awful, it was eye-popping. Compare him at 19 to some other players who have turned into MLB stars and it doesn’t look good for him
3. Nimmo was drafted after watching him play on travel teams. His High School didn’t have a team. I seriously question a teenager whose competition was questionable to say the least.
You’re judging someone off play in Brooklyn? You do know that many who do good there stinks at the higher levels and the ones who are vice versa do well, right?
I gave you my reasons. Take it or leave it. I believe he’s going to be an epic bust. That’s not the next Carlos Beltran…..
I’m with you on the let him play AAA. He started playing outfield like yesterday, so more reps in the outfield are a good thing. And technically you said Stanton should be in RF next year, and while I would love to see that. It’s not happening. The Marlins will trade him, but not to us unless we’re giving at least 2-3 of our top 4 prospects.
Spin just finished up in the dominican league, heres his #’s:
70 AB .429 AVG 0HR 10RBI 9SB 12SO .481 OBP .514 SLG .995 OPS
Not sure what position he played, but you would think it was outfield, not 2nd base
Updated: Apparently I just read that the Mets wanted Spin to play 2nd base in the Dominican league, but his manager with the Leones put him in RF.
BTW: He batted leadoff
Stanton will certainly be in New York next year, the Yankees. It’s already written in the stars. Marlins are shipping him off to the AL where they wont have to see him as frequently if at all, and certainly not to a division rival.
Seattle, Texas, and heck even Boston can offer better packages than the Yankees. But yeah, only chance Stanton is in New York is as a visiting player.
Tradebait? You realize the Mets need all the talent they can put on the field. I have a clue for you, my friend. Valdespin is what this team needs at the top of the batting order. In case you haven’t been watching this team since we lost Jose Reyes, we’re a collection of turtles on the basepaths. In order to go first to third, the Mets need to petition MLB to allow our baserunners to use mopeds!
Barring a trade of FA signing, and despite limited experience and low OBP, Spin should be starting CF and leadoff hitter vs. lefties and righties. I just don’t see anyone else on the roster with enough natural talent and upside to fill those two roles as an above average MLB CF. Spin is definitely high risk based upon his hitting approach, but if he can temper his aggressiveness just enough to get that OBP up to 35%, he can definitely be an asset. I agree with SaltyGary, it is amazing how tolerable different athlete’s personalities become when they are playing well.
Valdespin doesn’t draw walks which means he would need to bat around .315 in order have a .350+ OBP.
He has the speed and athleticism, but if he can’t draw walks he can’t bat 1st or 2nd unless he has a very high average.
I would bat him 7th and start him against all RH SP…
Yeah, because CowGUTS, Tejada and Byrd are better choices….Maybe Murph? Whether you like it or not, Valdespin should be playing everyday and that INCLUDES hitting leadoff against righties.
Reyes hardly ever drew walks either when he first came up…. A good eye at the plate can take years to develop
He needs seasoning. Send him to AAA for a few months where he can play full time, focus on basics and refine his game. By then, the flaws in the Met outfield will become clearly defined and he can then move into a full time major league slot,.
Ya, let him get some more reps at Vegas and refine his game. Promote him when either Cowgil or Brown wash out or there is an injury.
lmao…..CowGUTS should be pumping gas on Jerome Ave in the Bronx right down by Yankee Stadium.
Here we go again,
Can we AT LEAST see what he does in Spring Training before deciding in January to send a player who had a productive debut with less than 200 ABs? Can we do that first? He may be cut OR he may win a job, you just don’t know yet.
Bayonne, didn’t you know? Only d’arnaud, wheeler, nimmo, cecchinni, fulmer, plawecki are the ones who are high impact and will be HOF for us.. God forbid we preach patient to one of the omar minaya era players..they all suck, only the sandy alderson’s players are pegged to be good so..
Actually it is your ilk who are all upset that Alderson did not go out and sign an entire outfield to replace almost all Omar guys. Seems those of us talking about patience are talking about, primarily, seeing what Duda, Kirk, Den Dekker, and, yes, Valdy can do.
no one is saying to replace Duda in LF….
we are talking about RF and CF….
we are talking about adding 1 impact player to either RF or CF and then letting the best 2 between Valdy, Kirk and MDD play the other position / bench….
and having depth is never a bad thing….if Omar inherited the players he left for Sandy, he doesnt have to spend an arm and a leg to get the mets back to prominence.
Sandy has been staunchly against high salary players since the mid-80′s…and the only reason he gave those big contracts in Oakland was AFTER 1990…when he had NO minor league system to replace Canseco, McGuire, Stewart, etc
we need a system built for sustainable success like Atlanta or Tampa… not Oakland ( circa 1980-1996 )
Too bad it’s your ilk who don’t realize the STIFFS Alderson dragged in here were the worst we’ve seen since the early 2000′s. And that doesn’t even include the STIFF draft pick named Nimmo.
You seem to be running around all over my site like a chicken without a head. If you have something constructive to say then say it. Otherwise stop hitting each thread up with useless comments that are just negative and make little to no sense. Thanks.
Actually, my posts make plenty of sense. Perhaps you should examine my posts a little better. Anyone who thinks the collection of used napkins Alderson has put into Met uniforms are worth last week’s raw sewerage might be the one running around like a chicken without his head making no sense whatsoever.
Fortunately, my posts and ideas aren’t operated, indicated nor financed by you. Unless you want to put someone of my elite talents on your payroll…I didn’t think so. Your frustrations are duly noted, however. I will try not to insult your very sheltered members of your rather elitist website…….
Alex, Nimmo struck out in Brooklyn 78 times in 69 games and hit a whopping .248. The next Carlos Beltran is born lol
Because ‘spin is the most talented out of the group. Odds are, the Mets outfield to start the season is going to be rotating platoons. ‘spin needs all the reps he can get, which won’t happen in a platoon.
Put him in AAA. We have plenty of AAAA types that are already seasoned. They have earned the opportunity to succeed or fail. Spin looked promising in the outfield and lost on the bench. While I have my doubts that Las Vegas is a city that spin will improve his attitude. It is a place that he can learn to hit a higher level of pitching.
He certainly should be in the ST scrum of guys trying to earn themselves a job.
what I owuld like to see though is pick a spot for him, and let him play there. Just please, after seeing him there last season, don’t let it be SS! So OF or 2B, pick one and let him get settled.
I assume OF, and said last year that CF makes by far the most sense. So what the heck, let him have a shot at it in ST. If he can play good enough D (he certainly seems to have the speed), give him the job, or let him share it with Cowgill.
and if he does get sent to AAA, make him the everyday something (CF or 2B) and let him earn his way back. If he can be a ML quality 2B, or at least surpass whatever Murphy qualifies as, not like th eincumbent is that good.
Spin if nothing else does bring a dynamic to the team they don’t get form anyone else.
When Valdespin shows he can do something other than hit a fastball, then by all means put him in CF.
Until then send him to AAA and hopefully he can learn what on base percentage is…
Agree, obviously its small sample size and inconsistent competition but he certainly did in Winter league this year.
2012 DWL 93 AB 18BB 15K’s .280 .402 .398
2012 DWLP 85 AB 9BB 14K’s .424 .474 .518
This.
Hard to get a good gauge though on winter league ball. It’s not like you’re facing the quality of ML pitching you face day in and out like you do during the regular season.
Valdespin was one of (If not) the best players in the DWL. It’s amazing how little information some people based their strategy on.. Some people preach patient to alderson and his players who are not doing good, yet forget this kid is 22
He just turned 25. Nevertheless, he should get a shot.
Please explain why CowGUTS should be a starter. Someone needs to bless me with the answer to that one.
OBP is a worthless stat. Pitchers don’t walk batters unless they fear their hitting prowess. Hits are more valuable than walks. Hopefully one day statgeeks will understand baseball players don’t go up there looking to walk….
As if CowGUTS could hit effectively to be a MLB starter…LMAO. Byrd is a bum. Valdespin deserves the starting job.
Let him compete in ST and if he shows the plate discipline that he did in Winterball then he’s a valuable resource. If he’s the free swinging guy that can only see fastballs, not so much.
The problem with Valdy is the fact that Collins, in spite of what he said, did not start him the last two months of the season. If Collins put him in CF, the hardest OF position defensively, and let him play while seeing how he progressed at the plate, we might not be having a discussion about the need for a CF. Or at least the Mets would know if he couldnt do it. But, alas, Collins played Torres as opposed to giving an athletic kid a shot. Sure he seems immature at times. Yet he seems to be the only one near the majors with a lot of athleticism, he can steal bases while hitting for some power plus he did hit for average throughout the minors. Will that translate into the majors? The only way to tell is to put him in there and give him 300 ABs.
With what they have showing up to compete in the outfield, nobody should be out of the competition in spring training. Jordany should have just as much chance to make the team as Cowgill, Brown, or Kirk. Whoever performs best should get the spots.
Spin doesn’t fit the goodie too shoes mold. He will be cut at ST and become a very productive starter for the Astros.
I would think Spin has options left.
Let him platoon with Brown in RF and relegate Baxter to role player. CF too tough a positon to play. Also, given his amazing ph performance last year, even days he not starting can contribute in that role. He can play inf as well giving Collins addtional flexiblity. I def want him on the 25-man, not AAA. Someone stated he had a 21-game hitting streak to end winter ball(im not positive if that is correct) i just think he’ll get enough ab’s up in bigs, and although lacks some discipline..can’t argue with those numbers …
Well right now you have
Duda, Kirk, DD, Cowgill, Brown, Baxter, and V-Spin. Most likely only 5 of them survive. Obviously bet is that DD is in AAA but that still leaves one.
I think Kirk starts season in AAA, he still needs consistent ab’s imo to get better, he’ll be the first called up if a OF gets nicked up..and DD minors.. ..i also think they could go w/6 OF’s to start season if they dont feel like giving Cowgill the job fulltime, then a backup C, Turner, then either Hicks or Bixler as mid inf(no idea which is better), any injuries would change that scenario quickly,,11 pitchers ..
No way Kirk isn’t on the opening day roster unless they sign a real CF.
Perhaps, but Kirk’s hardly a pure cf, Cowgill is supposed to be good cf, defense and speed,,im predicting Kirk starts AAA..i could be wrong im sure im in the minority but i think he’s the likely odd man out in the OF but i think they could start w 6 also….spring hasnt started, so much could change
I’m not a fan but I do recognize he is talented. I wouldn’t be the least bit upset to see him go if we get back something of need and value.
The Mets should actually give up top prospects for Stanton next year. Then sign Gomez to play center. I would give up Flores, Syndergaurd, one of Fullmer, Mateo, or Montero, and another prospect that they can choose. Do not forget we have Famillia and Mejia as well. Stanton is under control for another 4 or 5 years. He is worth it.You say it is a 1% chance, but whoever has the best prospect package gets him. Another good draft and deadline deals makes the system even deeper. This is a trade that has to get done and extremely possible.
If you read my posts you know I am for building through prospects and then adding, I am very pro Sandy. While I do not agree that Bourn or the Uptons are answers because of their prices in money and prospects, and that now is not the proper time to go nuts in trades and signings, but Stanton most Definitely is the answer and next year is the time. He has to make this trade or try extremely hard to.If this does not happen and the Mets do not sign free agent or two next year and make a trade then I will never argue a post with the anti Alderson bloggers ever again!!!!!! Yes that is how certain I am on this.
And If it makes you feel bette,r I predicted the Wheeler trade 6 months before it happened, and last off season I predicted Alderson would get Darnaud sometime by last years trade deadline or after, I just thought it would be Niese he gave up, it was before Dickey went completely nuts and Niese had is best year. The moves just made to much sense. So does Stanton. Also if that happens to fall through I expect a hard push for David Price. These players are difference makers and must be sought out, I support building the system strong and bringing up players but they also need to use them to get one of these players as well.
The possibility that they can move Santana, Francisco, Possibly Wilson if he signs, and Marcum would help into adding to a package for him or keeping the system respectable after the trade. Also another strong draft will aid in this as well. The Mets will be in a much better place next off season as far as money and prospects.I will write this all season in hopes that it happens like the other two moves. Just makes to much sense, and best of all, he is not a free agent for several years. They can lock him up through his arb years and give him options through some of his free agent years. Then still have money to add a center fielder (Gomez), closer (no idea), and a starter(Lester) and still be under or around 100 mill next year. Makes way to much sense. Mets make noise next year, loud noise!!!!!! I hope they do cause not being able to go after a anti Alderson would suck, it would also prove them somewhat correct.
Peter I love you man but two things,
1) It will take MUCH more than that to get Stanton.
2) The Marlins are NOT NOT NOT going to trade Stanton to the Mets.
Hate to be the arse but it will still be ok buddy.
I hope that is not true. Remember they have traded with us before, including Mike Piazza.
Valdy is not throught highly by the Mets. I think he will be in AAA ball as they have no patience with him. If he is needed later in the year they may bring him up or trade him.
Do not think the Marlins care about trading within the division, they care about getting the best package. Syndergaurd moved up 66 spots to 29 on the top 100 prospects, and I will presuem if he does not have a set back he moves up again. He is one of the best right handed pitching prospects in baseball, Flores is one of the best third base prospects in baseball, if he also takes another step they will be more advanced and major league ready, and top prospects at their position, two to three more prospects should do it. Look at their system, they need a third baseman= Flores, A pitcher to go with Fernandez= Syndergaurd. That is the starting point. It has been said that Syndergaurd is more advanced than Wheeler was at this point in his career, so he could be on that level as a prospect.
You are not the arse Trs86,I I am usually not persuaded into others thinking and of course I do not expect everyone to agree, it makes to much sense for both clubs for me not to think it could happen, of course there is going to be a ton of competition for him, but only those teams with the prospects to do it have a shot and the Mets do. Just copy the post and play it back next off season.
Peter we are entitled to opinions. But:
First Stanton is worth two top prospects and a starter such as Gee or Murphy. He is not worth more.
Second: Only if the Mets gave Ike, Harvey and Wheeler would they have a chance.
one thing about Valdy, as opposed to the other OF guys fighting for jobs.
He can, at least theoretically, be the back up, back up MI guy (emergency basis) essentially replacing Turner.
I don’t think Valdy is a viable option at SS. Believe the first time he played there last season, he made 2 errors in one game…or was it one inning?
Either way, he’s a pretty awful SS according to his minor league defensive stats.
that was the Nats game where they should have had it won, and Spin singlehandedly torpedoes Parnell. After that brutality, I said I never wanted to see him over there again.
But note, i said emergency guy. I don’t want to see Turner there either, and he is the current “in case of glass” guy!
Hanzi I mean Alex
Do you even bother to read what people say before you go on you psychotic diatribes? Better yet do you even read what you right?
I wish the Mets would put him in Right Field and just let him play. I watched a video of his highlights. None of his homers were cheapies. They all cleared the wall a plenty even the ones hit at citifield. I think if the kid gets 500 ab’s he could hit 260 to 290 with 25+ hr’s…I mean yes he will be streaky but with his speed and if they work with him a bit. He could seriously produce. Though his attitude is worrisome, what choices do we have? I am tired of giving other teams retreads opportunities and not our own prospects.
From my Valdespin post on 10/16:
My Valdespin Prediction
Valdespin wins the right field job out of spring training. He has a confidence level that I love to see in players, and I think the Mets will have a very solid player at their disposal if they can get him to buy into the offensive philosophy. When it’s all said and done, he may be their best option for right field next year – partly due to the fact that he may be one of the only options when it is all said and done. I would love to see what he could do if he worked the counts into his favor a little more, and got a chance to play everyday at the big league level. Worst case scenario, he will have a similar role as he did in 2012, and the Mets will have a very good bat coming off the bench and a solid fourth outfielder.
I take back all my previous comments on this post. I never saw this ‘Spin coming.
We’re closing in on Mid-March, and Valdespin is losing on a starting OFer job this season. It’s good to see him be talked about for his production on the field, and not “antics” off the field. This team is in desperate need of his speed and energy, and if he continues to develop at the plate, this offense has a chance to be really good.
Hey Hank, lol these flashback things are funny because you get to see comments that people said and then they do a 180. It’s all good because we all been burned by these flashbacks before. I think MMO do these to make us all look bad.
Hey Maniac,
I think I’m fine with it. Back in January, I was all about Valdespin getting more reps in AAA so he could continue to develop. It turns out Winter Ball was all that he needed. He has looked amazing so far this Spring, I just hope he keeps it up and earns a starting job come April.
Only the Mets would give RF to two certified STIFFS instead of putting in one of their top prospects. A guy with speed and the ability to hit. Marlon Byrd and CowGUTS are receiving the nod over Valdespin. Forget the fact, Valdespin should be the starting 2B….That’s another story for another day…..SMH
JimmyBX, is that you?
The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination…….
Einstein you are not.
Depends on your point of view, sir…… Imitation is often the greatest form of flattery, they say….
I do want to see JV on the opening day roster, and I want to see what he can give the team. Let’s see how he plays-platooning or not–for the first eight weeks of the season.
He certainly has worked his way into the conversation. Right now we have 6 guys wanting to start and JV is the only one performing at a level commensurate with the Major Leagues. If he keeps it up I can not see Baxter or Calgon getting the nod over him. I still see no obvious answers in center except DenDeckers glove is amazing. If Duda picks it up I would not be against Duda DenDecker JV as the starting three.
If you’re the opposing team would you rather face Spin or Baxter?? I mean c’mon, still early SP but he has worked his way into the mix all-right. I’m sure we’ll have to deal with some bad ab’s and the balance of an attitude ranging from arrogance to sulk but whatever I’m all- in VSpin, he’ll win games and put up real numbers IMO ..
Spin has got to be the best offensive (maybe in a few ways) OF’er we’ve got. Cowgil & Byrd have had equal or better STs, but what they can produce over a full season is questionable. Baxter is a solid platoon guy / 4th OF’er. Duda is a homer or a K; Kirk has potential, but wilted last year & hasn’t shown much (injury) this Spring; ditto Brown, Hoffmann. MDD is a human highlight reel defensively–and because of that should make this team, in my view. On a team that has spotty OF defense and a so-so up-the-middle D, i bet MDD ‘saves’ 10 games this year for us IF he plays.
But back to Spin: the kid could, i say could be a star in the early stages. He should be our starting RF’er.
Omarslegacy…..you are a real annoying pain in the a$$. All you bring to this site is negativity
My goodness, you are offensive. Hope you’re not that much of a sourpuss off this site.
Let this kid play and start not an out fielder but what speed and bat better than anyone else out there this year big upside to give him one full year with his bat.
Valdespin (bats left) Corey Maybin (bats right). They are just about the same age and exiting ballplayers. Very similar. I can see a bigger upside to Spin maybe as high as a Kevin Mitchell type.
