If the team does contend, and Wright misses some games at the beginning of the year, well then likely you will be able to point to a million different things that happened during the year that the Mets could have done better to get more wins. Not just point to Wright’s absence. It would be totally unfair to pin it on him if the Mets miss out on the WC by just a few games. But that’s probably what many of his critics will do. They will blame it on all Wright. That’s unfortunate.

I share the same feelings you all have expressed, having the vantage point of experiencing things further back – just like the younger people today are going to have the same advantage of perspective decades later. That’s why, when it comes to advanced statistics, I see them as a modern storage of data and material that players always wanted to refere to as opposed to the emphasis that they reveal things that were not understood before or provide a greater appreciation of that was lost before.

So, I haven’t changed my opinion of things but gave a reason anyway as to why even missing a few games the beginning of the season would be considered more serious if a team was contending. I mentioned in a previous post that the Angeles were five wins shy of going to the wildcard play-in that past season (four games shy of making it a tie). At the beginning of the season, because they wanted to keep Trout down in the minors to save a year, they went 6-13. Of those 13 losses, seven were of two runs or less (five by one run). At the same time, during his first 19 games of the year Trout’s bat accounted for more than one run per game. Could he have made a difference in turning at least four of those seven losses into victories? That would have meant the Angeles being 10-9.
