I didn't know that Capt Kirk, Murphy and Turner were in the WBC. They should have stayed in St Lucie where it is safe. Some fans may not realize this, but if you don't play at the highest level, you risk injuries by going thru the motions and doing things differently than you normally do. And gee, players hide injuries all the time, not just at the WBC. The complaints are all invalid.

Hi Just,

"Nah, not really. Fred Wilpon bad mouthed David the same time he bad-mouthed Jose in that New Yorker article."

I dont believe Fred intended for that to ever come out...

Fred is far too passive to ever come out and personally bash a player...he is more of the leak a story out and have an unnamed source tell it to Adam Rubin

===
And remember what the organization did to Ike Davis this past season.

http://www.capitalnewyork.com/article/sports/2012/09/6537276/are-mets-sliming-ike-davis-now-too

They weren’t exactly cordial with R.A. either.
====
Absolutely correct. If u get on their bad side, no matter who u are...they will crap on u...

=========

"So, the moral of this story as that when it comes to putting down people, the Mets are an equal opportunity employer."

Not necessarily, they do have a few favorites...Franco was def one...Leiter was another...Benson was not...LoDuca was def not...Ike is not...Wright is....in terms of latinos/blacks, they are pretty much 2nd class citizens here....its always been like that...

thats why u'll see til this day, fans rate Cam Maron over Juan Centeno ( Say Hi Petey Pete )
even though Cam was riding the bench as a DH for almost 1/3 of the season while Centeno was throwing out 40% of baserunners and hitting for contact.

If Cam Maron did that, we would hear ALOT MORE about Cam Maron. Ditto for Kevin Pawlecki

Both saw time on the pine and DH'd last year...

its this weird fascination with seeing a roster that looks and relates to the common apple pie loving American.

and sorry...but met fans, especially suburban sheltered met fans have earned that reputation for YEARS. this is why u see eyes roll or some folks cringe when reggaeton music comes on...or salsa music comes on...during a players AB

this is also the reason why anytime David Wright comes up...and he has a rap song...99.99% of the time...the artist is white...

its either Eminem ( My name is ) ...or the Beastie Boys ( brass monkey ) ..or House of Pain....( jump around )

David actually requested Big Pun's song, I'm not a player I just crush alot...the mets took it off after a few months in 2008

"But if I recall (and correct me if I’m wrong on this) it was reported that Omar was angry with Beltran going ahead and making the announcement that he was going for the surgery on his own"

Nope...that didnt happen...and Beltran came out and said Omar and him were cool and saw eye to eye...it was John Ricco who said the team was upset...

the same John Ricco that orders pizza for the team

Even Omar was not going to go to the press and bash Beltran over that BS

Sure he knows how to communicate. He's one of the best communicators on the team. But, in his mind, there was NOTHING to communicate. Because nothing was interfering with his play on the field.

And why do you care if the Mets don't have him for 4-5 games? According to you, the Mets aren't contending. So no big deal, right?

"Mets assistant GM John Ricco admitted publicly that the Mets organization was disappointed with Beltran’s decision for surgery and argued that they were not afforded the opportunity to proceed otherwise."

http://newyorkmetsies.wordpress.com/2010/01/15/surgery-places-beltran-back-on-the-shelf/

I think we can put that issue to rest.

The Wilpons were most def trying to make Beltran the villian.

If there was a reason why the press did not side with the wilpons...

it was because It doesnt help your credibility when this happens a few months before

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/11/sports/baseball/11mets.html?_r=1&ref=baseball

now the fact that met fans all around the web were STILL calling Beltran selfish/soft for having his surgery is another issue in itself

Joey --

So, I haven’t changed my opinion of things but gave a reason anyway as to why even missing a few games the beginning of the season would be considered more serious if a team was contending.

So, it's only bad IF the mets contend ... IOW, with 20-20 hindsight? Right?

Sorry but I don't like that conditional reasoning. It is either bad NOW or it isn't.

If the team does contend, and Wright misses some games at the beginning of the year, well then likely you will be able to point to a million different things that happened during the year that the Mets could have done better to get more wins. Not just point to Wright's absence. It would be totally unfair to pin it on him if the Mets miss out on the WC by just a few games. But that's probably what many of his critics will do. They will blame it on all Wright. That's unfortunate.

Hi Metsie, Hotstreak and 62,

Guys, should we let Metsie hang around with us or wait till he gets a bit older? LOL.

I share the same feelings you all have expressed, having the vantage point of experiencing things further back - just like the younger people today are going to have the same advantage of perspective decades later. That's why, when it comes to advanced statistics, I see them as a modern storage of data and material that players always wanted to refere to as opposed to the emphasis that they reveal things that were not understood before or provide a greater appreciation of that was lost before.

And, of course, due to the black and white nature of stats, to use them as a method to understand the game as to run it on a professional level - well, that is indeed insinuating that those who have played, managed, coached or scouted the game beforeh know less than the new generation of stat followers in regards to strategy, player talent, team building, etc.

Again, there is a difference between more reference material than new discoveries. That was what David Coen was alluding to in an earlier disucssion on the topic.

As far as life and politics, I went full circle, from being a teenage republic working with the Nixon campaign to four years later trying to get George McGovern to replace him to actually attending a meeting of the U.S. Socialist Party to becoming a more moderate liberal to eventual cynic! :) So, I think the advantage of my different stages in life enabled me to appreciate that there are other perspectives and one should try to understand why they exist before just simply dismissing them. Of course, being only human, we all have some rigidity for otherwise we would never have principles more than those of being fair-weather.

Agree about JFK and his hypocrocy of being more of an opportunitist (though that never justifies the tragedy that befell him and eventually his brothers) and feel that LBJ is a tragic example of what happens when one gets caught up in self-righteousness being an excuse for all atrocities in the cause of "freedom" instead of "empire".

But that's for another day. As far as the Knothole Club, there are only two videos of Happy Feldon's show and the one with Jackie Robinson came on my fifth birthday so whenever I see clips of it I keep on thinking of what it must have been like going on in my household at that time - of course, it also being my bed time as well!

HI Metro,

Did I say that?

This is what I wrote:

"One thing in David’s favor is that is most likely not going to happen this year."

I then added this just to be fair:

"But if it does, indeed the WBC will come back to haunt all of us."

So, I haven't changed my opinion of things but gave a reason anyway as to why even missing a few games the beginning of the season would be considered more serious if a team was contending. I mentioned in a previous post that the Angeles were five wins shy of going to the wildcard play-in that past season (four games shy of making it a tie). At the beginning of the season, because they wanted to keep Trout down in the minors to save a year, they went 6-13. Of those 13 losses, seven were of two runs or less (five by one run). At the same time, during his first 19 games of the year Trout's bat accounted for more than one run per game. Could he have made a difference in turning at least four of those seven losses into victories? That would have meant the Angeles being 10-9.

Sorry if it came off that way 62....It wasn't my intention at all to put words in your mouth....

All I'm getting at is if there is even a HINT of inequality as far as ability to play the game it will always translate to the reporting of it....

I agree with all the rest of what your saying....
It's a two way street and opportunity given if not taken is not the fault of the percieved or past discriminator....

You want to know the real issue is as I see it 62?

Many people WANT to be the victim these days!

They like the sympathy!

This country didn't get where it is (or was might be more appropriate) by saying Oh Poor Pity Me, I am denied this or that or I am not allowedf to this or that....

In the old days you didn't complain and whine... you did something about it!
