Mets Have High Expectations For Tapia, deGrom and Panteliodis

domingo tapia

DOMINGO TAPIA: Looks like he’s on the Mets fast-track…

Mack emailed me last night and told me the “Group 2″ starters were announced and he posted them on his site tonight. Here they are:

  1. Rafael Montero
  2. Domingo Tapia
  3. Jacob deGrom
  4. Tyler Pill
  5. Chase Huchingson
  6. Alex Panteliodis
  7. Logan Verrett

He correctly points out, that is normally the group of pitchers that usually begin the season at Double-A Binghamton.

As you know, I’ve posted my own projected minor league rotations and have updated them a few times already since January. But suffice it to say I’m a little shocked to see two particular names on this list – Tapia and Panteliodis.

I wrote Mack back and said:

Wow, didn’t expect to see a couple of those players listed there.

I didn’t think Tapia or Pants would be placed this high and so soon… They are both basically skipping right past High-A St. Lucie which is tough for any pitching prospect to do.

I could potentially see Pants skipping a level because he’ll be 23 and has shown lots of potential and savvy, but Tapia just turned 21 and I had him slated for a full season at Lucie in 2013…

I can only assume that the team is extremely high on both of them… EXTREMELY high…

DeGrom of course is no surprise, and  I’ve mentioned many times that he will move quickly through the system. He’ll be 25 in June and is far more advanced and we need to see what he can do against players his own age. I like him a lot..

Montero and Pill are no-brainers…

I’ll probably update my projected rosters on Monday. This changes a few things, plus it looks like Jenrry Mejia and Jeurys Familia are both heading to Vegas to start the season.

By the way, Mack posted the B-Mets 2013 Schedule today.

  • UNRELATED:

The David Wright haters on this sight will get NO sleep tonight, as it is super apparent that CAPTAIN AMERICA was the glue that held Team USA together, and without him they couldnt muster up a strong cough.
And, we all know those same haters are the ones that would love to massage Stantons b*lls as he signs a major contract with the Mets….well, now we know why the Mets got a hometown discount when David agreed to the contract he did agree to with us, the same one that all the haters thought was too big, AND, we also learned why someone has to be 23 years of age before they can become 30 years of age. Stanton surely showed his age & inexperience in delivering in the clutch, and CERTAINLY can not carry a team the way CAPTAIN AMERICA can.
Now haters, take an ambien and get some rest.

    • Joe. we have had 15,708 different Met fans read this site in last 24 hours including you. The haters you refer to we can count on one hand. Why give them attention and free advertising?

      • Another serious question for Bayonne,JDD, Alex and crew. Which scenario would bring you greater joy.

A – 5 of our pitching prospects become top notch MLB starters and 2 or 3 others plus Flores net us an all star young outfielder among other assets. Plus Nimmo and Cecchini shoot through the system with blow out numbers and produce for the big squad a year or two before expected.

        Or

B- none of the prospects pan out whether due to injuries or just disappointing performances

In the case of A, the team is a contender for years to come and Alderson’s strategy proves very successful. In the latter, Alderson’s tenure is generally recognized as lost time and a train wreck.

Which would you prefer? Be totally honest.

        • Did you just really write that? The question is answered in the question he wrote.

          To net a young OF.

Do you think Murphy is going to bring that back who by the way is a Omar guy also?

        • Anyone who would prefer option B doesn’t classify as a true Mets fan to me. To wish failure on your own team, it’s management, or any of it’s players is indicative of hate and not fandom.

        • That was your takeaway from my question? That? Holy holy holy crap. Seriously guy, you have such intense issues.

But to play your game, leave my question alone and just insert any white Sandy player you want in the place of Flores in that example, and then answer the question.

          • just for the record…Wheeler and Travis count as Sandy players…

        • the only young OF I see worth it is Stanton, so if ur talking about him than yes, i would trade Flores

But in that scenario, trading for young OF is only 1 piece of the puzzle to profitability, the other half is signing him and buying out his free-agent years ( same as with Ike )

if u trade for young stud now, while ur in ur rebuilding years, and u dont have the money to resign him b/c attendance has dwindled over the years, than u just wasted ur time.

it is notable though that not one prospect that Sandy has drafted or ever traded for is ever on the table for these fantasy trade discussions…

if u could get Stanton for Wheeler and Nimmo, would u do it ?

      • Hey Joe….

Remember this the next time someone writes to you and complains that Alex and bayonne always make every thread about Wright…..

Also note that while they complain about it they actually LOVE it when it is brought up because it gives them an opening to do what it is they come here to do….

Badger and Bait posters because the site they normally frequent has scared away anyone they could have their FUN with and had to come here to get thier jollies!

It is the root cause of all the problems here and if you want proof look no further than the Ban counts and who got it and who didn’t when you finally put the screws to the problem!

    • Yeah just like the 2006 NLCS. Grow up. It is a meaningless exhibition. If the US wanted to win Verlander, Kershaw, Straaburg and Price would be there instead of Dickey, holland, Vogelsong and Gonzalez. Now mr cover boy has put his Met season in jeopardy,,,,we may not get to 70 wins without him. The guys homers off a journeyman relief pitcher from Italy and all of a sudden he is a hero. A joke

      • and Pujols, Beltre would be manning 1B/3B…not a retired Miguel Tejada and Edwin Encarnacion

the US had 14 All-Stars on their squad….and got beat by a PR team that had 2 ( Molina/Beltran)

    • Stanton has 2 gamewinning HR’s against the Mets in the past 2 years… ( IN GAMES THAT COUNT )

      2011 – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utg0dWHcTRw

      2012 – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZlIiB-nN-k

Captain Clutch in the past 4 seasons has 4 HR in the 9th inning….thats it…and in his entire 9 year career….he has 1 walk-off HR….and that was off Heath Bell in 2008

Stanton in 3 seasons has 8 HR from the 9th / 10th inning on..

6 of the 8 broke a tie and won the game

sorry champ, but when the game is on the line, a manager is going to walk Stanton to get to Wright, not the other way around

      • Not unless you’re Papelbon.

    • Stanton sold out. It’s called Karma. Hopefully, Stanton will play for the proper squad in 4 years. Congrats to TeamPR for their tremendous gutsy win last night. As the saying goes, “The cream always rises to the top!”

  • IF this is the rotation for the B-Mets, Mazzoni to Las Vegas?

    • Yes, no doubt Mazzoni to Triple-A now. He could have gone either way but in light of this, he’s a lock for Vegas.

      • I think they’re going to make him a reliever… Is there any room for him in the triple a rotation?

  • can you please explain to me what you mean by “Group 2″ starters?? I’ve never in my life heard of such a thing

  • I’m always hopeful about our Farm kids….
I just don’t rate a GM on them until such time as they make or not make the MLB….
Because they could have the greatest outlook in the Minors and then get to AAA, Get hurt and become a bust!

You should never get TOO excited about a maybe…
Cause the failure rate of prospects is not even as good as a coin flip.

I wish them all well and look forward to eventually seeing them but I sure am not going to base my current happiness about them until such time as they wear an MLB jersey.

  • I’m surprised as well that Pants is going to AA, but it’s great to see a southpaw get that jump. I just hope he’ll be less hittable than he was in Savannah. Other than that, he looks promising.

  • I am still hopeful that Familia can impress the club enough where he can still make the team.

  • Panteliodis looks like he should cut back on the gyros …

    • It’s a fuel tank for a pitching machine
