Funny, someone told me that probably wouldn't happen today because it would be interfering with mail/correspondence from home ... Mother's of America would not approve! Lots of stuff used to happen that doesn't any more & I've been told the further back you go the crazier it gets. I believe DI's used to carry loaded pistols during WWII. We had this DI who got bounced to our platoon because he hosed his other platoon down in the showers, in full uniform fatigues, with soap and everything ... he also supposedly had a recruit clean a trash can with Brasso -- from the inside!

What a post fantastic. Your Dad sounds so much like the Dads of my era. Any emotion was considered a weakness. I grew up in a Yankee household and slowly moved toward the Mets when the Yankees dumped Yogi. We had standing rules in the house meant to keep my emerging Met passion in check. I had only seen major league baseball games at Yankee Stadium and was dying to get to Shea. The rule: my father would take me to a Met game only if they reached .500 after the first six weeks of the season. In the mid 60's that seemed like a life sentence. There were also rules for television. The New York team with the best won/loss record would be watched on the color television in the living room. The team with the poorer record could be watched through the snow storm of an old black and white in the attic. I watched a lot of early Met baseball in the attack. I think that might be part of why I came to root for them so hard.
Great post. It brought back a lot of old memories.

Great story, Matt. Thanks for sharing.

Too bad you didn't decide to take charge of your life just a few months later. You might have been in town then to witness the greatest Met season I've ever seen. :-)

Hi Matt,

Thanks again for sharing some beautiful memories of you and your dad with us. I remember calling up my father-in-law moments after the ball went through the legs of Buckner because he loved to watch the Mets too. Needless to say, I woke him up because he turned the game off as the Mets were making those first two outs and went to sleep. He wasn't at all angry at me for waking him up but was in total shock when I told him we won the game - unless I mistook that lack of anger and total shock with him still being half asleep!
