Former And Current Mets Abound On All-WBC Team
The 2013 All-World Baseball Classic team was announced Wednesday, and the squad is riddled with Mets both current and former alike.
Of course “Captain America” aka David Wright, who’s .438 batting average and 10 RBIs earned him the nickname made the team. Wright was also the only American to make the cut.
From the reigning champion Dominican Republic, former Met spark plug and current Blue Jay Jose Reyes made the team as did former Mets prospect Nelson Cruz.
Finally hailing from Puerto Rico, Angel Pagan and former swingman Nelson Figueroa were also selected, playing integral roles in bringing Puerto Rico to the finals.
Fans and media combined to pick the team sponsored by MetLife. Fernando Rodney, Yadier Molina, and Robinson Cano were among some of the others chosen.

An article by

isn’t tying Nelson Cruz to the Mets a bit of a stretch? I thought he was in the system for about 2 weeks 10 years ago?
He was actually with the Mets for 3 years…however, he never played any games for them or their minor league affiliates…he played in the Dominican Summer League instead. Then, they traded him to the A’s in 2000 for the amazing Jorge Velandia. It was a great trade…Velandia played in 47 games with the Mets and batted .149.
thanks. I may be mixing him up with another guy that they picked up, had for a few months and traded away, who then became a ML player many years later. But was certainly never a Mets prospect.
MAN, the Captain America haters on this site are due for a bad weekend afterreading this !
BTW: Endy Chavez just got released by KC….lets pick him up !!!
Hi Joe and thanks for the comment.
The official count of Wright haters on this site is somewhere between 1 and 5. On MetsBlog and Mets.com it’s more like 200-300.
Just wanted to give you the latest update.
Hater?
No one hates Wright..
we just remember the Wright you wrote an article on in 2008…
http://metsmerizedonline.com/2008/11/david-wright-needs-to-take-a-c.html
“No one hates Wright”
Of course they don’t. They just pick apart his character (I.E. “He sounds like Michael Jackson”) justifiably, right?
umm not just here, or just on MB, but ALL OVER THE INTERNET, folks had something nasty to say about Reyes from 07-11
http://cheezburger.com/4021081088
http://chicosplayhouse.wordpress.com/2011/03/11/jose-reyes-reminds-me-of-predator/
and i recall jessep whipping out every illogical argument in the book to reason why Reyes was not valuable..
not one of u folks were defending reyes the way u do Wright ( yes i am talking to YOU JOE D )
…like I said… Joe D COMPLETELY forgot about the David Wright he himself wrote an article about 5 years ago…
and since 2008, David has not done much to convince me that JOE D was not on point…
http://metsmerizedonline.com/2008/11/david-wright-needs-to-take-a-c.html
that is not hateful….that is the truth…
so yeah…the same angry frustrated rocky balboa fan rednecks have been hating on reyes, beltran and anyone born south of Florida for the past 8 years…
Are you freaking kidding me??? I dont know who the heck you are and obviously you are new here, but if you think I didn’t defend Reyes vociferously on this site to a fault, than you know nothing about me so don’t put words in my mouth. I fought with my own writers about Reyes. So please, go piss on someone else’s leg not mine regarding Reyes.
Just for the record JoeD DID defend Reyes….At the time me and him plus the guys who everyone hates for talking about Wright now were the ONLY ones here who seemingly wanted Reyes signed and extended….
There were others but they didn’t enter into the meat of the discussions they just said they hoped Reyes came back…
And never once did JoeD or I ever have to use the phrase “YOUR A HATER/NOT A FAN” to defend our position!
My apologies Mr. Joe D.
I am looking up old Reyes posts and I have yet to see the objective outlook that you have with Wright.
If this fairness does exist on record, than please excuse.
When I speak, I am not really talking about the way MMO folks were from 2005-2011, I wasnt even on this site to speak to their individual posts…
I am talking about in general, the way folks on message boards and in the general media were from 2005-2011 on reyes compared to how they were on wright
Reyes endured far more hate than Wright with far less people defending him. If you were one of them, than props to u.
That article I looked up when you were critiquing Wright in 2008…this is what u had to say
“Let me preface this post by saying David Wright is my favorite Met by far. Okay, that said, let me proceed with the utmost of caution…”
When bashing Reyes on any board…that is NOT NECESSARY….
not even after he wins the 1st batting title in team history….
we all know what’s up….
Oh sweet, another one of these guys. It gets better and better.
There were far more Reyes Haters than Wright haters here….
Just thought that should be pointed out as well….
not even close
Hi Kay, I saw those cheap childish comments made by someone intending to mock you, Gina and Tiffany. I don’t know who it was, but that IP has been banned. Sorry you had to see that and that I didn’t catch it sooner. LGM
I disagree. Ever since I came on here in 2008, if anything’s been a complete constant here, it’s the never ending hatred of Wright. Seriously, the last few years alone, I bet any topic with the title “David Wright” in it had over 100+ comments saying the same old things.
July 2008 MMO
*** Jose Reyes has received the brunt of criticism when the Mets lose. It’s mostly unfair. Knowing what a stand-up guy Keith is, and what a great person Jose is, I know that both of them have already put this past them. And if they haven’t yet, I’m sure they soon will.
*** I can understand why Jose Reyes was angry when his family told him that Keith referred to Reyes as being immature and acting like a baby. The Mets need to advise Reyes that playing in New York and getting criticized is all part of playing in this great sports metropolis. The Mets need to salvage this situation and get the most exciting player in team history to focus on baseball and not on his public perception.
Jose Reyes was called a baby and immature by the media for trying to play through pain and asking his manager to stay in the game…( in a NON-WALK YEAR )
…everytime Reyes made an error, it spoke to his “commitment” or “maturity level” or “intelligence”
How many times did we hear stuff like that…
Reyes is physically gifted…but a headcase…not smart…doesnt have the intangibles…
In 2007/2008, Met fans wanted a David Eckstein type player…and were tired of the Reyes dancing they loved in 2006
( there is a hilarious article on the whole gritty theory here http://deadspin.com/5644755/little-man-gigantic-exaggeration-of-his-abilities )
Brandon Tierney goes on a rampage and bashes Reyes for being too exuberant…and says we should trade him…
same with John Harper…
In 2009….Lets trade Reyes
http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/mets/mets-crossroads-erratic-shortstop-jose-reyes-article-1.410967#ixzz0FayvesRP&B
then we heard the same thing about Beltran…yes…that Beltran…
according to Steve Phillips, a guy hitting .367 with power in CF, having won 2 GG in the past 3 years was not a smart player…
Even SI wrote an article on how bad Steve Phillips was off…
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/joe_posnanski/05/19/carlos.beltran/index.html
Hilariously, they never mentioned Steve bashing Johan Santana for the mets lack of run support…
he said Johan’s problem is that his pitching does not inspire his teammates to give him run support, so they relax and wait for the 1-0 outcome
Steve must’ve been on that Molly that night…
SI unfortunately does not have the reach that ESPN does…
Come on Metsie, that’s not even close to being accurate. The Wright hate whether here or elsewhere has been over the top, and on MMO it was usually 3-4 guys leaving 30-40 negative comments on any thread that even mentioned him. The other 60-80 comments in those threads came from 50 other people telling them they were wrong. I stand by those numbers.
There were at least 7-10 people who didn’t want Reyes back…and fought over us even giving him an offer…
As you said 1-5 on the Wright side….
And I’ll vouch for ya….You were NOT one of them!
Take the count of those who got all up on Reyes for that last game of the season…
Take the count of how many people said he wasn’t worth what Miami paid him…
Take a count on all those who complained about his injuries and missing too much time to resign…
Take a count on everyone who agreed with the policy of not even making an OFFER to him…
Tell me how many you come up with?…I assure you It’s more than the guys on Wright’s case!
The only difference between them and the Wright haters is THEY got thier GUY the Reyes guys didn’t….
And let me say THIS too….
I took a hell of a lot more heat for my Defense of Reyes than I ever got for my defense of Wright!
And I never once ever had to say “Your a Hater” or “Your Not a Fan”!
Because I could make my case without it….
Not exactly happening here now is it?
Hell one of your own writers even posted an article the day after Reyes was gone for good about how GOOD a day Sandy had!
There was just as much Hatred thrown at Reyes and by MORE folks than are throwing it at Wright!
The issue this time is they can’t handle it like an adult or act properly when it’s a player THEY like getting the treatment!
And resort to childish retorts which only INFLAME the discussion!
I know your doing the best you can here….No one is questioning that!
But look at who you banned recently and you got shocked didn’t you?
Totally not the guys you thought were going to be on that list wasn’t it?
“The issue this time is they can’t handle it like an adult or act properly when it’s a player THEY like getting the treatment!”
NAILED IT
Isn’t it ironic Endy gets released the day there’s a showing of the Prime 9 list of “Greatest Postseason Catches” on MLB Network? I love Endy, but pass. He’s done.
P.S., our old pal Ramon Ramirez got released too LOL.
I must say, March has been pretty good for Mr. David Wright.
LOL
December treated Wright the best !
Alex, I know you may be ticked off at me right now, but please tell Major Mango my feelings on Reyes. If anyone should know, it’s you.
This site will be the death of me. Here is a post by Clayton intended only to honor past and current Mets and all I see is a thread on who hates who the most. Unreal…
Congrats to David Wright, Jose Reyes, Nelson Cruz, Angel Pagan and Nelson Figueroa. LGM
It’s particularly nice to see Figgy pitch well as the attention might help him nab a MLB opportunity.
Figgy was always a guy who was long on heart and short on talent. All of his pitches were average or below average, but he worked hard to be effective by mixing them up and keeping the batters guessing. I always liked him.
I think he is what you can call a gamer. Short on talent, long on heart, and will leave it all on the field.
basically the guy you wanted to take the head off of and attach it to say Ollies body.
Exactly.

When the Brooklyn Dodgers left us starving for National League baseball, we were left with a giant hole in our hearts. The Mets filled that heart with joy and it didn’t matter how bad they were, we loved them.
In 1969 they rewarded that love and loyalty with a World Series trophy that we could all be proud of. Since then the team has had their ups and downs like any other team, but their love affair with their fans was a thing to marvel at.
Those days are now gone because of an impatient society that has been fueled by sports reporters and beat writers who couldn’t care less, a sports talk radio show that revels in the failures of the team and it’s players, a team sponsored network that is disconnected from the team, and a blogosphere that has gone out of control with negativity and the fascination with the power it yields irresponsibly.
It’s a cocktail for disaster and the New York Mets are unfairly swept inside it.
The most unfortunate part is that all those things I mention are not representative of the majority of undying loyalists to the team like myself. The majority of Mets fans are the most supportive fans on earth, but their voices simply are not loud enough to drown out the mindless utterings and negative rantings of the aforementioned.
For the majority of Mets fans it’s a travesty… a travesty that is perpetuated each day with the constant barrage of sensationalizing each and every player’s misstep or dissecting and over analyzing every players quote. It’s not only sad, but disgusting as well.
Mangu, the reason why this site allows so many people with different background in terms of baseball to post here is because of the owner, Joe D. He’s defended and justifiable criticize a player when it needs to be. If there’s one person who’s unbias, fair and a good citric is him. While we complaint about the site here and there and even him at times, I wouldn’t wanna be elsewhere as a mets blogger.
I understand your frustration on Reyes, hell, me too, but Joe d was not one of those people who didn’t back him up… I can tell you Major Mangu because back then the CORE used to send him salutes.
