I'm currently reading a book about the early Mets called the Happiest Recaps - First Base. Of course, it was written by a friend of mine and he includes my name in the acknowledgements - which might or might not help him in his career from this point on. :)

I read that one too - good read.

Read Ronnie's last book as well. Interesting insight into what goes into a pitcher's thinking with every game, every batter and every pitch. - along with some personal notes from his career.

I'm sure Mike needed no prodding to play injured.

But what I don't understand is Jeff Wilpon's reaction - though not having the book I do not know the context in which that statement appeared.

The Mets, as we know, are very conscientious of their image, one which has been tarnished by this ownership. I can only surmise that perhaps it is not Mike that Jeff is concerned about but how it might get people to remember how they publicly dealt with injuries to Church, Bay, Beltran, Reyes, Santana, Davis, etc. - all day to day before long stints on the DL and for some - most all - if not most - of the season.

Kinda like Watergate. Richard Nixon was not concerned about the break-in itself but what an investigation could then possibly reveal - which he had every right to be scared about.

Just guess, but after the fiasco that surrounded Santana the other day, I wouldn't be surprised.

'Apparently, Piazza did himself no favors by saying he was “encouraged to play while being injured” in his autobiography, “Long Shot”. Would that really surprise anyone?'

Not in the least. Prior to 2010, that seemed to be the norm.
Deep bone bruise on a bad knee? No problem, just shoot it with cortisone, wait 72 hours and get back out on the field.
Oblique strain on one side? Got it covered. Just tape it up and swing the bat from the other side only.
