Glad to see this article got back on track after somebody tried to turn it into another wright bashing/defending thread- as if we havent had enough already. Nice article. I have been thinking the same thing all winter. I would not want to trade places with the Yankees or The Phils right now. Our time is coming and thiers is ending. The pieces are still coming together but the light is in view. Lets go Mets !

Any Mets fan should be excited. However, that excitement should be tempered with both a grain of salt and a sense of history.

I've seen Matt Harvey and Zach Wheeler before- they came in the form of Paul Wilson who was the best right handed pitching prospect since Roger Clemens, and Jason Isringhausen who in short order blew out an elbow, punched a water cooler and broke his hand, and developed tuberculosis and was traded for Billy Taylor all before his 26th birthday...

I also saw Tim Leary, David West, and Pete Schourek too. Let's all calm down and take a deep breath. We are nowhere near out of the woods...

And remember, the future of this franchise isn't Zach Wheeler, Matt Harvey, or Travis D'Arnaud- it's the dopey son who hasn't had to work a day in his life who will be calling all of the shots once Daddy and Uncle Saul pass away...

There can be no hope where there is a Wilpon...

And did any of these off-the field issues prevent Miguel or the Tigers from success this year?

We hold Keith Hernandez in high regard and his track record makes Cabrera look like a choir boy

on record, Keith was snorting coke in the clubhouse and introducing younger players to drugs

the 86 mets were taking female fans out of the stands and having "batting practice" with them DURING the game IN BETWEEN INNINGS

since when did we need a bunch of Mother Theresa's on the field

Lou,

New York is the media capital of the world. When it comes to sports, being the big Kahuna in the city means something. Look at the efforts the Nets are making to unseat the Knicks. Same with the Jets and Giants. And yes, Mets and Yankees. For the last 2 decades the Yankees have owned NYC. This is something that is starting to change. Honestly, do you really feel that players want to come to the Mets unless there is a valid reason (like overpaying or they have no other options). That is the history since the early 1990s.

As for the Mets themselves, how can you not be excited about what is going on? Young talent is emerging, some of which is going to be very productive at the major league level. This is a situation which sharply contrasts the Yankees who are entering a period similar to what the Mets endured the last couple of seasons (players owed lots of money who have skills that are going south). That is going to have an impact upon what happens going forward. There is a lot more to competition in NYC than just what takes place on the field.

Noise gets attention which gets ball players. Do you recall the 80s? George was able to keep himself in the media but the Yankees were relatively quiet. The Mets, on the other hand, were the Kahuna in NYC. The stars showed up in Flushing during the middle part of that decade. And in NYC, just like LA, that means a great deal.
