Video: Players Are Excited About The Mets Pitching Staff This Season

Terry Collins, Johan Santana, Jon Niese, and Bobby Parnell talk about why they are very excited about the Mets pitching staff this season.

Collins’ notes that for the first time in over three years, Santana goes into this season healthy and with no offseason surgery or rehab. He also tabs Johan as his Opening Day starter.

Niese is very high on the rotation and thinks the Mets have a great starting five.

As it shakes out, that starting five should look like this:

1. Johan Santana

2. Shaun Marcum

3. Jon Niese

4. Matt Harvey

5. Dillon Gee

  • Who wrote this Matt Cerrone.?
Yes I can be tough too but Joe D. I am just busting chops after the harassment I just went thru. :)

  • It is a good rotation, with all starters at least average or above, and Wheeler potentially an ace. I like who they have brought in for the bullpen, too. With D’Arnaud up in May or June, all they really need is for Duda to hit better and to trade for a decent outfielder. I could then see them winning 85 games or so. Of course, they could also win 70 games, if things don’t break their way and the outfield remains bad.

    • The Mets rewrote the book last year on the old adage that pitching is 90% of the game along the late Earl Weavers quote “Momentum is As Good As Tomorrow’s Starter. With Dickey the Mets had 101 quality starts (QS) tops in all of baseball. I believe team ERA was either sixth or seventh worse in all of baseball about 5.5 runs given up per game. That means from inning 7 thru end of game they gave up 2.5 runs.

Pitching wins with good starting and pitching and a good bullpen. It wins with superb defense and speed. Of course Earl’s proverbial 3 run homer helps too.

  • lets just say presumably Johan gives a 3.00, Niese improves again to a 3.20, Marcum has a very real shot for a 3.50, Harvey, obviously with that 2.73 in 10 starts, first full season we could give him a 3.75 or so, and Gee improves to a 3.60.

That’s a pretty phenomenal rotation, and realistically speaking, any of those guys could EASILY outpitch those ERA’s

    • Thing is, it’s not about the rotation, the real issue is whether the bullpen is finally fortified enough to be as consistent as the rotation.

P.S. Parnell needs to keep the beard.

    So am I.

  • “Players Are Excited About The Mets Pitching Staff This Season”

So long as it is our players and not the guys on other teams.

  • I’m utterly shocked that Bayonne and Alex are not in this thread,

“I can’t believe this Sandy Alderson WHOOPLA, just listing shaun marcum up as the number two pitcher just cause sandy brought him in. SANDY PROPAGANDA. go ahead sandy followers praise your lord you idiots”

atleast, thats all i ever get out of their posts…

  • I’m not only impressed with the starting five but I like the fact that if we need a sixth we have a few good options to call on without having to rush Wheeler.

  • I don’t think there are many who aren’t satisfied with the potential this starting rotation has.

But what good is it if one does not get the run support? Seattle literally was tied with Detroit for the third best pitching in the American League yet won only one game more than we did last season. That’s because they were last in scoring. And even if enough runs are scored what happens when a starter leaves the game with the lead only to see his bullpen blow it for him?
