MLB is most definitly NOT going to make a ruling on a Hypothetical situation....
It is maybe possible for the Players Union to ask for a clarification and challenge of the CBA regarding that particular rule and change WHEN the protection is awarded to teams (Pre-Comp) to address it or to change the protection rule to read that the picks of the 10 worst teams in the league are protected, not simply the first 10 picks of the draft.

It would also have to adjust the protection because any team who got a comp in a top 10 rank due to not signing should by rights have that pick protected as well since it was originally a protected pick. It could be already addressed in some way however since Comp Picks could never be taken away due to FA dealings before. If they signed someone it was thier 1st or 2nd rounder they would lose but not any comp picks. The comp picks were not even awarded in those cases in the first place.

Right but with Piniero he was coming off his best year working with Duncan.

But wasn't Derek Lilliquist their pitching coach last year which was possibly Lohse's best year. I get the Duncan effect you mention but then what happened in 2012?

I don't think he's a great pitcher - but he is good. He's that solid 3/4 guy

Lohse has worked with two of the best pitching coaches in the game in Anderson and Duncan, and even they have not been able to iron out some of his inconsistencies. Remember Joel Piniero? I bet a lot of GM's look at Lohse in that light, basically factoring the positive effects of outstanding coaching -- much like a hitter coming from a hitter's park. Lohse can be a nut, a real hothead, great stuff but he's prone to losing his composure.

Personally I'd love to have him on the team (maybe for that very reason) but he needs more than a "hands off" pitching coach like Warthen, he needs a nanny and a therapist to visit him on the mound from time to time.

Isn't ST a week or more longer this year, due to the WBC? It seems like Pitchers have been here forever, and there are still 4+ weeks to go until OD.

Marcum (and Johan) are not shut down. They are just spending more time on the building up phase, and not essentially "wasting bullets" pitching in ST games thi searly.

They can start in 2 weeks (say 3/11) in games, and still have 5 games each before hitting the regular season. Do SPs normally pitch many more games than that in ST?

If either guy has to get shut down, then I would worry! But with veterans that have structural issues to manage, taking a conversative approach is fine by me.

I thought I read somewhere that a 2 year deal in the 20-24 million dollar range could do the trick.

Would you pull the trigger on that if it were for that much? I'd be tempted, considering the state of Johan and Marcum.

Hi Met Maniac - Hey regarding Marcum, he isn't injured.... he's trying to build up strength in his shoulder to avoid injury. I really don't see a problem with trying to get as healthy as possible before pushing through an early Feb spring training game... It's Feb 28th, I don't think these minor things are really that big of a deal.

I think you need to measure the severity of the injury versus the time of the year. Wheeler didn't crumble to the ground, his injury just wasn't worth sending him out there on Feb 27th. They have plenty of time.

So now our replacement for Dickey is on the shelf already? Not surprising considering how his season ended. Johan Santana who would take Dickey's role as the ace it throwing 79 mph fastballs, and the heir apparent Zack Wheeler has some sort of rib cage strain? No Met fan should be surprised about Marcum, that's exactly why he was still a free agent three weeks ago. And Johan who was shutdown for what supposed to be an ankle problem shows up to camp throwing marshmallows. Again, Alderson banks another Mets season on injury rehabs and players with chronic injuries while getting rid of a team's best player and not even getting what the team needed most of all, an outfielder. Call this one a double negative.

I haven't been following this issue all that closely, but it was my understanding that MLB wouldn't entertain deciding on this issue unless the Mets came to them with a offer on paper for one of these players that would cost them a pick.

Have to believe at the beginning of the off season, they weren't thinking about Bourn as his price was too high.

No one thought that Lohse would be unsigned at this point - I'm sure he wasn't even on the Mets radar, let alone entertaining making him an offer during the off season.
Have to believe at the start of the off season, OFs, catcher and a RH bat were the Mets priority - not SP of Lohse's character. Now...once they traded RA, they needed another SP but still don't think a multi year contract for Lohse - which is what he was looking for - was in their plans.

Kind of an off topic question but - when the Mets were doing that whole Bourn thing where they wanted the pick back if they signed him.... did they actually file that paperwork (just because)? I mean - why not try to set the precedent and say "if this happens in the future another team doesn't have to worry about it" (if it was approved)

the reason I ask is, at this point why wouldn't a professional pitcher like Kyle Lohse just take a 1 year deal? I mean I get that the Mets have a slew of arms but they also have a slew of what if's attached to that. (Johan, Marcum, Gee plus the young kids).

So why not at least file the argument and let MLB decide and then they could at least entertain the thought of bringing in a legitimate starter on a 1 year deal or even a 2 year deal

I mean – why not try to set the precedent and say “if this happens in the future another team doesn’t have to worry about it” (if it was approved)

the reason I ask is, at this point why wouldn’t a professional pitcher like Kyle Lohse just take a 1 year deal? I mean I get that the Mets have a slew of arms but they also have a slew of what if’s attached to that. (Johan, Marcum, Gee plus the young kids).

So why not at least file the argument and let MLB decide and then they could at least entertain the thought of bringing in a legitimate starter on a 1 year deal or even a 2 year deal
